ELVEssentially Literal Version

According to Matthewa

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

1 The book of the genealogyb of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aramc, 4 and Aram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king.

And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaphd, 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amose, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.f

17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 And the birthg of Jesus Christ was this way. After being betrothed to Joseph, His mother Mary, before they came together, was found to be with childh from the Holy Spirit. 19 But Joseph her husband, being a just man, was not wishing to shame her, willedi to divorce her quietly. 20 But after considering these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fearj to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you will call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and they shall call his name Emmanuel”,k

which is interpreted, God with us. 24 But after waking from sleep, Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife, 25 and he did not know her until she gave birth to a son. And he called His name Jesus.

The Visit of the Wise Men

2 Now Jesus, after being born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold Magi from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and we came to worship Him.” 3 But after hearing, King Herod was troubled and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and after assembling all of the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was questioning from them where the Christ is born. 5 And they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this has been written by the prophet:

6 ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for out of you will come a ruler

who will shepherd my people Israel.’”l

7 Then Herod, after secretly calling the Magi, diligently inquired from them the time of the appearing of the star, 8 and after sending them to Bethlehem, he said, “After going, search diligently for the childm, and when you might find Him, tell it to me, that I also after coming might worship Him.” 9 But after listening to the king, they went and beheld the star that they saw in the east was going before them until coming to stand over where the child was. 10 And after seeing the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 11 And after going into the house they saw the child with Mary, His mother, and after falling down, they worshiped Him, and after opening their treasures, they offered to Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warnedn in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

13 But after departing, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph saying, “After rising, take the child and His mother, and flee to Egypt and be there until I say to you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy Him.” 14 And he rose up and took the child and His mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and he was there until the death of Herod, in order that the word by God through the prophet might be fulfilled, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”o

Herod Kills the Children

16 Then Herod after seeing that he was mocked by the Magi, was very furious and after sending, he killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all its bordersp, 2 years old and under, according to the time which he diligently inquired from the Magi. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,

                weeping and loud lamentation,

        Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”q

The Return to Nazareth

19 And after Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “After rising, take the child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the lifer of the child have died.” 21 And after rising, he took the child and His mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But after hearing that Archelaus is reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and after being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And after coming, he lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3And in those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 Repents, for the kingdom of heaven draws near.” 3 For this is he who was spokent of by the Isaiah the prophet, saying,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

         Prepare the way of the Lord;

make straight His paths.’”u

4 And John himself was wearing garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were being baptized in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.

7 But after seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You generation of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore, bear fruit worthy of repentance. 9 And do not thinkv to say in yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as a father,’ for I tell you all that God is able out of these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 And now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore, every that tree not bearing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 “Indeed, I baptize you all in water for repentance, but He is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you all in Holy Spirit and fire; 12 whose winnowing forkw is in His hand, and He will cleanse perfectly His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn, but the chaff He will burn completely with unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. 14 But John was forbidding Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 And after answering Jesus said to him, Let it be sox now, for this it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consentedy it. 16 And after being baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming on Him; 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”z

The Temptation of Jesus

4 Then Jesus was brought up to the desert by the Spirit to be testedaa by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, afterwards, He was hungry. 3 And the tester came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, speak to these stones in order that they may become bread.” 4 But after answering, He said, “It has been written,

“‘Not by bread alone will man live,

but by every word proceeding from the mouth of God.’”ab

5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple

6 and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will lift you up,

so you might never strike your foot against a stone.’” ac

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it has been written, ‘You will not test the Lord your God.’” ad 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed to Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9 and said to Him, “All these I will give you, if after falling down you might worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, Go away, Satan! For it has been written,

“‘The Lord your God you will worship,

and to Him only you will serve.’”ae

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 And after hearing that John was arrested, He withdrew into Galilee. 13 And after abandoningaf Nazareth, He went and lived in

Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 in order that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

16 the people sitting in darkness

saw a great light,

and to those sitting in the region and shadow of death,

        to them a light dawned.”ag

17 From then, Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

18 And while walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon being called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow after me, and I will make you both fishers of men.” 20 And immediately after leaving their nets they followed Him. 21 And after advancing from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. 22 And immediately after leaving the boat and their father, they followed Him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

23 And He was going around in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction in the people. 24 And His fame spread in all Syria, and they brought to Him all those having sickness, constrained with various diseases and pains, those possessed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and He healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount

5 And after seeing the crowds, He went up to the mountain, and after sitting down, His disciples came to Him.

The Beatitudes

2 And after opening His mouth, He was teaching them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poorah in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those mourning, for they will be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meekai, for they will inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those hungering and thirsting for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the mercifulaj, for they will receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pureak in heart, for they will see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those having been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when they might revile you all and might persecute and might say all kinds of evil against you all falsely on account of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you all.

Salt and Light

13 “You all are the salt of the earth, if salt might lose its taste, how will it be restored? It is good for nothing except throwing out to be trampled under people's feet.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill is not able to be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it lights all in the house. 16 This way, shine your light before men, so that they might see your good works and might glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 “Do not thinkal that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For amen I say to you all, until heaven and earth pass away, one iota, or one dot will never passam away from the Law until all comes to pass. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches them to men will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does and teaches them to men will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you all, that if your righteousness does not superaboundan greatly the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enterao the kingdom of heaven.

Anger

21 “You all heard that it was said to the old ones, ‘You will not murder;ap and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you all that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says to his brother rhakaaq will be liable to the councilar; and whoever says foolas will be liable to the Gehennaat of fire. 23 Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then after coming, offer your gift. 25 Be in agreement with your adversaryau quickly while you are with him on the way, so your adversary might not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown in prison. 26 Amen I say to you, you will never comeav out until you have repaid the last pennyaw.

Lust

27 “You all have heard that it was said, ‘You will not commit adultery.’ax 28 But I say to you all that everyone looking at a woman to lustay for her already committed adultery with heraz in his heart. 29 And if your right eye entices you to sinba, tear it out and throw it away from you. For it is better that you lose one of your limbs and your whole body might not be thrown into Gehenna. 30 And if your right hand entices you to sin, cut it off and throw it away, for it is better that you lose one of your limbs and your whole body might not go into Gehenna.

Divorce

31 “As it was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, he must give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you all that everyone divorcing his wife, except by the word of illicit sexual intercourse makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a woman having been divorced commits adultery.

Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the old ones, ‘You will not foreswearbb, but you will give back to the Lord what you swear to.’ 34 But I say to you all, do not affirm or deny anything by oath, nor in heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 nor on the earth, for it is His footstool, nor in Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King, 36 nor swear in your head, for you not able to make one hair white or black. 37 But yourbc word should be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything extra than this is out of evil.

Retaliation

38 “You all heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’bd 39 But I say to you all, do not resist the evil one; but anyone who slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him also the other. 40 And anyone willing to sue you and to take your tunicbe, give to him also your cloakbf, 41 and anyone will force you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 To the one begging you give, and the one wishing to borrow from you, do not turn awaybg from.

Love Your Enemies

43 “You all heard that it was said, ‘You will love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’bh 44 But I say to you all, love your enemies and pray for those persecuting you all, 45 so that you all might be sons of your Father who is in heaven, for He rises His sun on evil and good, and rains on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you all love those loving you, what reward do you all have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you all greet your brothers only, what more are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Therefore, you all will be perfectbi, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Needy

6 “And beware not to do yourbj righteousness in front of the people in order to be seenbk by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

2 “Therefore, when you give to the needybl, do not trumpetbm in front of yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they might be glorified by other men. Amen I say to you all, they have receivedbn their reward. 3 But you giving to the needybo, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father seeing in secret will repay you.

The Lord's Prayer

5 “And when you pray, you all will not be like the hypocrites, because they love after having stood to pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may appear to men. Amen I say to you all, they have received their reward. 6 But when you may pray, go into your private room and after shutting your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father seeing you in secret will repay you.

7 “And while praying, do not repeatbp useless phrasesbq as the Gentiles, for they think that in their many words they will be heard. 8 Therefore, do not be likebr them, for your Father knows what you have need of before you all ask Him. 9 Therefore, you all pray this way:

“Our Father who is in heaven,

        let your namebs be holy.

10 Let your kingdom come,

let your will be done,

as in heaven as on earth.

11 May you give to us today our daily bread,

12 and may you forgive to us our debtsbt,

as we also forgave our debtors.

13 And do not bringbu us to temptation,

but may You deliver us from the evil onebv.

14 “For if you all forgive men their offensesbw, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, bx 15 but if you do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.

Fasting

16 “And when you all may fast, do not look gloomyby like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they might be seen by men while fasting; amen I say to you all, they have received their reward. 17 But while you are fasting, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that you may not be seenbz by men while fasting but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father who seeing in secret will repay you.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not amasscacb for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but amass for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there will also be your heart.

22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light,cc 23 but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. Therefore, if the light in you is darkness, the darkness is great!

24 “No one is able to serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold firmly to the one and despise the other. You all are not able to serve God and riches.

Do Not Be Anxious

25 “For this reason I say to you all, do not be anxiouscd about your lifece, what you all might eat or what you all might drink, nor about your body, what you all might put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air that do not sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them; are you all not of more value than they? 27 And who out of all of you being anxious is able to add one cubitcf to his stature? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Note carefully the lilies of the field, how they grow: neither toiling nor spinning, 29 but I say to you all, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. 30 But if the grass of the field, being alive today and being thrown into the oven tomorrow, God clothes this way, will He not much more clothe you all, O you all of little faith?cg 31 Therefore do not be anxiousch, saying, ‘What might we eat?’ or ‘What might we drink?’ or ‘What might we wear?’ 32 For all these things the Gentiles seek after, for your heavenly Father knows that you all have need of them all. 33 But you all seek first the kingdom of Godci and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you all.

34 “Therefore do not be anxiouscj about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own evilck.

Judging Others

7 “Do not judgecl, in order that you are not judgedcm. 2 For in the judgment which you all judge, you all will be judged, and in the measure which you all measured with, it will be measured to you all. 3 And why do you see the twigcn in your brother's eye, but the beamco in your own eye, you do not carefully consider? 4 Or how will you say to your brother, ‘Permit me to takecp the twig out of your eye,’ and behold the beam in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite, first remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the twig out of your brother's eye.

6 “Do not givecq what is holy to the dogs, nor throwcr your pearls before pigs, that they may not trample them underfoot and after turning, might attack you.

Ask, and It Will Be Given

7 Ask, and it will be given to you all; seek, and you all will find; knock, and it will be opened to you all. 8 For everyone asking receives, and the one seeking finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or who out of you all is a man, who if his son will ask him for bread, will give him a stone?cs 10 Or if he will ask for a fish, will give him a serpent?ct 11 Therefore, if you all, being evil, know to give good gifts to your children, how much will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those asking Him!

The Golden Rule

12 “Therefore whatever you wish that men would do to you, this also you all do to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

13 Come in through the narrow gate, because wide is the gate and broad is the path which is leading to the destructioncu, and many are those coming in through it. 14 How narrow is the gate and troublingcv is the way leading to eternal lifecw, and few are those finding it.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you all in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 From their fruits you all will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?cx 17 This way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the rotten tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree is not able to bear bad fruit, nor a rotten tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree not bearing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus from their fruits you all will recognize them.

I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but these doing the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, in your name, did we not prophesy, and in your name, cast out demons, and in your name, and do many mighty works?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘Not at any time did I know you all; depart from me, those working lawlessness.’

Build Your House on the Rock

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a prudentcy man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone hearing these words of mine and not doing them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.”

The Authority of Jesus

28 And it came to pass, when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

8 And after coming down from the mountain, great crowds followed after Him. 2 And behold, a leper came to Him and was kneeling before Him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you are able to make me clean.” 3 And after stretching out His hand, He touched him, saying, “I will, be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, See you speak to no one, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift which Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

The Faith of a Centurion

5 And after entering into Capernaum, a centurion came forward to Him appealingcz to Him and saying, 6 “Lord, my servant has lied at the house paralyzed, suffering terribly.” 7 And He said to him, “After coming I will heal him.” 8 And after answering, the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy that you might come under my roof, but only sayda the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I am also a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servantdb, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 And after hearing, Jesus marveled and said to those following Him, “Amen I say to you all, from no one I found such faith in Israel. 11 But I say to you all, that many from east and west will come and will sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be crying and grinding of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, Go, as you believed, let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed in that hour.

Jesus Heals Many

14 And after coming to Peter's house, Jesus saw His mother-in-law after having been lying and being sick with a feverdc. 15 And He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve Him. 16 And that evening they brought to Him many being oppressed by demonsdd, and He cast out the spirits with a word and all those having sickness He healed, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”de

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 And Jesus, after seeing a crowd around him, ordered them to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe, after coming to Him said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you may go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere His head may rest.” 21 Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permitdf me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

23 And after stepping into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered by the waves; but He was sleeping. 25 And after coming, they went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save usdg, we are perishing.” 26 And He said to them, “Why are you all afraid, O you all of little faithdh?” Then, after rising, He rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What type of man is this, that even winds and sea obey Him?”

Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons

28 And after coming to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenesdi, two men oppressed by demonsdj met Him coming out of the tombs exceedingly fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here before the time to torture us?” 30 But there was a long way off from them a herd of many pigs feeding. 31 And the demons were appealing to Him, saying, “If you cast us out, send usdk into the herd of pigs.” 32 And He said to them, Go.” And after coming out they went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 And the herdsmen fled, and after going to the city, they announced everything, especially the details of the men possessed by demonsdl. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and after seeing Him, they appealed so that He might depart from their region.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

9 And after embarking into a boat, He crossed over and came to His own city. 2 And behold, they brought to Him a paralytic, who had been lyingdm on a bed. And after seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, Have couragedn, child your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said in themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” 4 And Jesus, knowingdo their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But in order that you all may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — then He said to the paralytic — “After rising, pick up your bed and go to your home.” 7 And after rising up, he went to his home. 8 But after seeing, the crowds were afraid, and they glorified God after giving such authority to men.

Jesus Calls Matthew

9 As after passing on from there, Jesus saw a man sitting at the tax booth, called Matthew, and He said to him, Follow me.” And after rising, he followed Him.

10 And He began reclining at table in the house and behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And after seeing this, the Pharisees were saying to His disciples, “For what reason does your teacher eat with the tax collectors and sinners?12 But after hearing it, He said, “Those who are welldp have no need of a physician, but those who are sickdq. 13 But after going, learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’dr For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

A Question About Fasting

14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “For what reason do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Are the wedding guests able to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? ds But the days will come when the bridegroom might be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears from its garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither put new wine into old wineskins. But if it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But put new wine into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

18 While He was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler after coming was kneeling to Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but after coming, laydt your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus, after rising, followed him with His disciples. 20 And behold, a woman, flowing with blooddu for twelve years, after coming up from behind, touched the fringe of His garment, 21 for she was saying in herself, “If I may only touch His garment, I will be healed.” 22 But Jesus, after turning and seeing her, said, Have couragedv, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour. 23 And Jesus after coming to the ruler's house and after seeing the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 He was saying, “Go, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they were laughing at him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, after coming in He took her hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went through all that land.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

27 And Jesus, while passing on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Have mercydw on us, Son of David.” 28 And after entering the house, the blind men came to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith it is done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, See that no one knows.” 31 But after going, they spread His fame in all that land.

Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak

32 As while they were going away, behold, a man was brought to Him who was mute while being oppressed by a demondx. 33 And after casting out the demon, the mute man spoke and the crowds marveled saying, “Never was this seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “By the prince of demons He casts out demons.”

The Harvest Is Plentiful, the Laborers Few

35 And Jesus was going throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 And after seeing the crowds, He had compassion for them, because after being harassed and scattered, they were like sheep not having a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest that He might send out laborers into His harvest.”

The Twelve Apostles

10 And after calling to His twelve disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2 And the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeusdy; 4 Simon the Canannitedz, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, “Do not goea on the path of the Gentiles and do not entereb a Samaritan town, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And while going, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven draws near.8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You all received freely; give freely. 9 Do not obtainec gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunicsed or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. 11 But whichever city or village you all might enter, carefully discover who is worthy; remain there until you might leave. 12 As while entering the house, greet it; 13 and if indeed the house is worthy, bring your peace upon it, but if it is not worthy, return your peace to you all. 14 And if anyone will not receiveee you all or listenef to your words, while leaving out of the house or that city, shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Amen I say to you all, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Persecution Will Come

16 “Behold, I send you all out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore, be wiseeg as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and in their synagogues they will flog you all, 18 and before governors and also kings you all will be dragged for my sake, to witness to them and to the Gentiles. 19 When they might deliver you over, do not be anxiouseh how or what you might say, for what you should say will be given to you all in that hour. 20 For you all are not the ones speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 But brother will give brother over to death, and father, child; and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 22 And you all will be hated by all for my name's sake, but the one, after enduring to the end, this one will be saved. 23 When they may persecute you all in this town, flee to the next, for amen I say to you all, you all will not finishei the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24 “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is sufficient for the disciple that he might be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household.

Have No Fear

26 “Therefore, do not fearej them, for there is nothing after having been covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I say to you all in darkness, speak in the light, and what you hear whisperedek, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fearel from those killing the body but not being able to kill the soul; but fear more him being able to destroy both soul and body in Gehennaem. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a pennyen? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numberedeo. 31 Therefore do not fearep, you all are more valuable than many sparrows. 32 Everyone, therefore, who will confess in me before men, I also will also confess in him before my Father who is in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven.

Not Peace, but a Sword

34 “Do not thinkeq that I have come to cast peace on the earth. I came not to cast peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, 36 and the enemies of a man will be those of his own household.er 37 The one loving father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and the one loving son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 The one after finding his life will lose it, and the one after losing his life for my sake will find it.

Rewards

40 “The one receiving you all receives me, and the one receiving me receives Him sending me. 41 The one receiving a prophet in a prophet’s name will receive a prophet's reward, and the one receiving a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever might give one of these little ones even a cup of cold in a disciple’s name, amen I say to you all, will never losees his reward.”

Messengers from John the Baptist

11 When Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

2 And John, after hearing in prison the words of the Christ, after sending word through his disciples, 3 he said to Him, “Are you the one coming, or do we wait for another?” 4 And Jesus, after answering, said to them, “After going, tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind see and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them, 6 and blessed is he if he is not offendedet in me.”

7 While they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you all go out into the wilderness to seeeu? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you all go out to see? A man having been dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those wearing soft clothing are in the houses of kings. 9 But what did you all go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you all, and much greaterev than a prophet. 10 This is he about whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

who will prepare your way before you.’ew

11 Amen I say to you all, no one has arisen of those born of women greater than John the Baptist, but the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violenceex, and the violent seize it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you all are willing to receive, he is Elijah who shall come. 15 He having ears, hear.

16 “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to the others,

17 “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;

we lamentedey, and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ And wisdom was justified by her works.”ez

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

20 Then He began to defamefa the cities in which He did most of His mighty work, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if in Tyre and Sidon, the mighty works were done after being done in you all, long ago in sackcloth and ashes they would have repented. 22 But I say to you all, Tyre and Sidon it will be more bearable in the day of judgment than for you all. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?fb You will be brought down to Hades, for if in in Sodom the mighty works were done after being done in you, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say you all that in the land of Sodom it will be more tolerable in the day of judgment for than for you.”

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 In that timefc after answering, Jesus said, “I gladly acknowledge you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, that this was pleasing in your sight. 27 All things were delivered to me by my Father, and no one knowsfd the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son and anyone the Son may choose to reveal. 28 Come to me, all those laboring, and after having been overwhelmed, and I will rest you all. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you all will find rest for your souls, 30 for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

12 At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath through the grainfields, but His disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But after seeing, the Pharisees said to Him, “Behold, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” 3 But He said to them, “Have you all not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: 4 how he came to the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but for the priests only? 5 Or have you all not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and are guiltless? 6 But I say to you all that something greater than the temple is here. 7 But if you all had known what it means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’fe you all would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

9 And after departing from there, He came to their synagogue, 10 and behold a man having a withered hand. And they asked him, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to heal?” — in order that they might accuse Him. 11 But He said to them, “Which man out of you all who will have one sheep, if it falls on the Sabbath into a pit, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 Therefore, how much more valuable is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful on the Sabbath to do good.” 13 Then He said to the man, Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspiredff against him, how they might destroy him.

God's Chosen Servant

15 But Jesus, after realizing, withdrew from there. And many crowds followed Him, and He healed them all 16 and He strictly charged them in order not to makefg Him famous,fh 17 in order that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Behold, my servant whom I chose,

my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.

I will put my Spirit upon Him,

and He will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.

19 He will not quarrel or cry aloud,

nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets;

20 a bruised reed He will not break,

and a smoldering wick He will not quench,

until He brings justice to victory;

21 and in His name the Gentiles will hope.”fi

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

22 Then a man oppressed by demons, who was blind and mute was brought to Him, and He healed him, so that the mute man spoke and saw. 23 And all the crowds were amazed and were saying, “Is this the Son of David?” 24 But the Pharisees, after hearing, said, “This man does not cast out demons except by Beelzebul, the prince of demons.” 25 But knowing their thoughts, He said to them, “Every kingdom after being divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house after being divided against itself will stand. 26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself, how then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beezulbul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason, they will be your judges. 28 But if by the Spirit of God I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God came upon you all. 29 Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and seize his goods, unless first he might bind the strong man? And then he will seize his house. 30 The one not being with me is against me, and the one not gathering with me scatters. 31 For this reason I say to you all, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to people, but the blasphemy of the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever might speak a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven to him, but whoever might speak against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven to him neither in this age nor in the coming age.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit

33Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for out of its fruit the tree is known. 34 You generationfj of vipers! How can you speak goodfk, being evilfl? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man out of good treasure brings out good, and the evil man out of evil treasure brings out evil. 36 But I say to you all that every useless word that they will speak, the people will give account for on the day of judgment, 37 for out of your words you will be justified, and out of your words you will be condemned.”

The Sign of Jonah

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But after answering, He said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 For just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will be the Son of Man in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came out of the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

Return of an Unclean Spirit

43 “But when the unclean spirit might come out of the man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then it says, ‘Into my house I will return from which I came;’ and when it comes, it finds it empty, having been swept and having been put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and after entering, they live, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So it will also be with this evil generation.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

46 While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His mother and His brothers had been standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47 Someone said to Him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak to you.”fm 48 But after answering, He said to the one telling Him, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” 49 And after stretching His hand to His disciples, He said, “Behold my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever might do the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower

13 In that same day Jesus came out of the house and was sitting by the sea, 2 and great crowds gathered to Him, so that after boarding into a boat, He sat down and the whole crowd had stood on the beach. 3 And He told them many things in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow, 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5 And other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they were not having much earth, and immediately they sprang up, since they did not have depth of earth, 6 but after the sun rose, they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered away. 7 And other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew and choked them. 8 And the other seed fell on good earth and were giving fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He having ears,fn hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 And after coming, the disciples said to Him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And after answering, He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mysteriesfo of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For who has, more will be given to him, and he will be increased, but who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 13 For this reason, I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And fulfilled to them is the prophecy of Isaiah which says:

“‘“Hearing you all will hear and never understandfp,

and seeing you all will see and never perceive.”fq

15 For the heart of the people grew dull,

and with their ears they hardly hear,

and their eyes are closed,

that they might not see with their eyes,

and might hear with their ears,

and might understand in their heart

and they might return, and I will heal them.’fr

16 But blessed are your eyes, that they see, and your ears, that they hear. 17 For amen I say to you all, that many prophets and righteous people desired to see what you all see, and did not see, and to hear what you all hear, and did not hear.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

18 “You all, therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 Anyone hearing the word of the kingdom and is not understanding it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was has been sownfs in his heart. This is what was being sown along the path. 20 And what was being sown on rocky ground, this is the one hearing the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 and he does not have root in himself, but is temporary, and after being afflicted or persecuted on account of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 And what was being sown in the thorns, this is the one hearing the word, and the distractions of the eraft and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and it becomes unfruitful. 23 And what was being sown on good earth, this is the one hearing the word and understanding, who indeed bears fruit and makes in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The Parable of the Weeds

24 He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a man after sowing good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds in the middle of the wheat and went away. 26 And when the plants sprang up and made grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And after coming, the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 And he said to them, ‘An enemyfu did this.’ And the servants said to him, ‘Do you wish then, that after going we gather them?’ 29 But he said, 'No, so while gathering the weeds you won’t uproot up the wheat together with them. 30 Permit both to grow together until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest, I will to tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to burn them, but the wheat gather into my barn.’”

The Mustard Seed and the Leaven

31 He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 Indeed, it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it might grow, it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, that after taking, a woman hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”

Prophecy and Parables

34 All these things Jesus said in parables to the crowds, and He said nothing to them without a parable, 35 so that the word might be fulfilled throughfv the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables;

I will utter what has been hiddenfw since the foundation of the world.”fx

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then after leaving the crowds He went into the house, and His disciples came to Him, saying, “Clearly explainfy to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 And after answering, He said, “The one sowing the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world, and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom, and the weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy, after sowing them is the devil, and the harvest is the consummationfz of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned completely with fire, so will it be in the consummation of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send His angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of singa and those doing lawlessnessgb, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and grating of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He having ears, hear.

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure after having been hidden in a field, which after finding, a man hid, and from his joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for good pearls, 46 and after finding one pearl of great value he went out and sold all that he was having and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net after being thrown into the sea and gathering fish of every kind, 48 which when it was full, after being hauled onto the shore and after being sat down, men sorted the good into containers and threw out the rotten. 49 So it will be in the consummation of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil ones out of the midst of the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and grating of teeth.

New and Old Treasures

51 “Have you all understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And He said to them, “For this reason every scribe after being trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who brings out of his treasure what is newgc and old.”

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

53 And when Jesus finished these parables, He left from there, 54 and after coming to His hometown He was teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is this not this the carpenter's son? Is this not His mother called Mary and His brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all His sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they were taking offense at Him, but Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And He did not do many mighty works there, because of their unfaithfulness.

The Death of John the Baptist

14 In that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, 2 and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He was raised from the dead, and for this reason these powers are working in him.” 3 For Herod, after seizing John, bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip's, his brother. 4 For John was saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 And wishing him to die, he feared the crowds, because they were holding him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst and pleased Herod, 7 so that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she might ask of him. 8 But after being dragged forwardgd by her mother, “Give to me” she said, “here on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.” 9 And the king, after being sorry because of the oaths and those sitting at dinner with him, he commanded it to be given, 10 and he sent and beheaded John in the prison, 11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the little girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 And after coming, his disciples came and took the corpse and buried it, and after going, they told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13 And after hearing, Jesus withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself, and after hearing it, the crowds followed after Him on foot from the towns. 14 And after coming out, He saw a great crowd, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 And after the evening began, the disciples came to Him saying, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now over; dismissge the crowds in order that after going into the villages they might buy themselves food.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you all give them something to eat.” 17 And they said to Him, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 But He said, Bring them here to me.” 19 And after ordering the crowds to sit down on the grass, after taking the five loaves and two fish, He looked up to heaven and said a blessing. And after breaking off pieces, He gave to the disciples the loaves, and the disciples gave them to the crowd. 20 And they all ate and were filled. And they took up the excess pieces: twelve baskets full. 21 And those eating were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water

22 And immediately He compelled the disciples to embark into the boat and to go before Him to the other side while He dismissed the crowds. 23 And after dismissing the crowds, He went up to the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone, 24 but the boat now was many stadiagf from the landgg, being beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But the disciples, after seeing Him walking on the sea were terrified saying, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Have courage, I am. Do not be afraidgh.”

28 But after answering to Him, Peter said, “Lord, if it is you, commandgi me to come to you on the water.” 29 And He said, Come,” and after coming down from the boat, Peter walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But seeing the strong wind, he was afraid, and after he began to sink he cried out saying, “Lord, save megj.” 31 And immediately Jesus, after reaching out His hand, took hold of him and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubtgk?” 32 And after going up into their boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

34 And after crossing over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And after recognizinggl Him, the men of that place sent to all that region and brought to Him all those having sickness, 36 and were imploring Him in order that they might only touch the fringe of His garment. And as many as touched it were curedgm.

Traditions and Commandments

15 Then the Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem saying, 2 “Why do your disciples violate the tradition of the eldersgn? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 But after answering, He said to them, “And why do you all violate the commandment of God on account of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mothergo,’ and, ‘The one speaking evil of father or mother must surely diegp.’gq 5 But you all say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “Whatever gift to God from me might be useful to you,” 6 he need not honor his father.’ And you all invalidated the word of God on account of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied well about you all, saying:

8 “‘This people honors me with their lips,

but their heart is far away from me;

9 and in vain do they revere me,

teaching as doctrines the commandmentsgr of men.’”gs

What Defiles a Person

10 And after calling to the crowd to Himself, He said to them, Hear and understand: 11 it is not what is entering into the mouth that defiles a man, but what is coming out of the mouth; this defiles the man.” 12 Then after coming, the disciples said to Him, “Do you know that the Pharisees, after hearing the word, were offended?” 13 But after answering, He said, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”gt 15 But after answering, Peter said to Him, “Explaingu this parable to us.” 16 But He said, “Still you all are without understanding? 17 Do you all not perceivegv that everything going into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the toilet? 18 But what is going out of the mouth comes out of the heart, and this defiles the man. 19 For out of the heart comes evil reasoning, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, blasphemygw. 20 These are the things defiling the man. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

21 And after coming out of that place, Jesus withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And, behold, a Canaanite woman from that region, after coming out, was crying, saying, “Have mercygx on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is badly oppressed by a demon.” 23 But He did not answer to her a word. And after coming, His disciples were asking Him, saying, “Sendgy her away, because she is crying out after us.” 24 But after answering, He said, “I was not sent except to the lostgz sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But after coming, she was kneeling before Him, saying, “Lord, helpha me.” 26 But after answering, He said, “It is not good to take the bread of the children and to throw it to the dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, for even the dogs eat from the crumbs falling from the table of their masters.” 28 Then after answering, Jesus said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you as you wish.” And her daughter was cured from that hour.

Jesus Heals Many

29 And after departing from there, Jesus came to the Sea of Galilee, and went up to the mountain and was sitting there. 30 And great crowds came to Him, having with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at His feet, and He healed them, 31 so that the crowd wondered, seeing the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

32 But after calling His disciples to Himself, Jesus said, “I have compassion on the crowd because now three days they remain with me and do not have something they might eat. And I am unwilling to dismiss them hungry, so that they don’t faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to Him, “Where are we, in the wilderness, to get so much bread to fill so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And after commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 He took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, He broke them and was giving them to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds. 37 And they all ate and were filled. And the excess of the broken pieces they took up, seven baskets full. 38 Those who eating were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after dismissing the crowds, He embarked into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 And after coming to Him, the Pharisees and Sadducees testinghb Him, demanded Him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 But after answering, He said to them, “After it is evening, you all say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Indeed, the appearance of heaven you all know to interpret, but the signs of the times you are not able?hc 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, and a sign will not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah.” And after abandoning them, He left.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 And after coming to the other side, the disciples forgothd to bring bread. 6 But Jesus said to them, Watch and pay attention to the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began deliberating among themselves, saying, “We did not bring bread.” 8 But after knowing, Jesus said, “Why are you discussing among yourselves, O you of little faith, that you all do not have bread? 9 Do you all not yet perceive nor remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you all took? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you all took? 11 How do you all not perceive that I did not speak about bread? But pay attention to the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that He did not tell them to pay attention to the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 And after coming into the district of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus was asking His disciples, “Who do people say is the Son of Man?” 14 And they said, “Some, John the Baptist, and others, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you all say I am?” 16 And after answering, Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And after answering, Jesus said to him “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! Because flesh and blood did not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, that you are Peter, and on this rockhe I will build my churchhf, and the gates of Hadeshg will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be, after having been boundhh in heaven, and whatever you releasehi on earth will be, after having been released in heaven.” 20 Then He commanded the disciples in order that they might not tell anyone He is the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that it is necessary He go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and on the third day, to be raised. 22 And after taking Him aside, Peter began to admonish Him, saying, “Mercyhj to you, Lord! This will never happen to you.” 23 But after turning, He said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me, because you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone is wishing come behind me, let him denyhk himself and lift up his cross and follow me. 25 For if anyone wishes to save his lifehl, he will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what man will be useful if he gains the whole world and forfeitshm his soul? Or what will a man give in exchangehn for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of His Father with his angels, and then He will repay each person according to his actions. 28 Amen, I say to you all, there are some, after having stood here, who will not tasteho death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And He was transformedhp before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him. 4 And after answering, Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowedhq them, and behold, a voice from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleasedhr; you all listen to Him.” 6 And after hearing, the disciples fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid. 7 And Jesus came to them and after touching them, said, Rise, and do not fearhs.” 8 And after lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus only.

9 And while they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples asked Him, “Why then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 And after answering, He said, “Elijah indeed comes, and he will restore all things. 12 But I say to you all that Elijah has already come, and they did not fully discernht him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

14 And after coming to the crowd, a man came up to Him, kneeling before Him, 15 and saying, “Lord, have mercy onhu my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and they were not able to heal him.” 17 And after answering, Jesus said, “O faithless and corrupthv generation, how long will I be with you all? How long will I put up with you all? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus reprimanded it and the demon came out from him, and the boy was healed from that hour. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus by themselves and said, “Why were we not able to cast it out?” 20 And He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For amen I say to you all, if you all have faith like a grain of mustard seed,hw you all will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you all.”hx

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

22 And while they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill Him, and on the third day, He will be raised.” And they were exceedingly distressed.

The Temple Tax

24 And after coming to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And after coming into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from the foreigners?” 26 And after saying, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are exempt. 27 But in order not to cause offensehy to them, after going to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and after opening its mouth you will find a shekelhz. After taking that, give it to them for me and for you.”

Who Is the Greatest?

18 In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And after calling to Him a child, He put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Amen I say to you all, if you do not turnia and become like the children, you all will never enterib into the kingdom of heaven.ic 4 Whoever therefore will humble himself like this child, this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 “And if anyone receives one such child in my name receives me, 6 but whoever might offend one of these little ones believing in me, it would be better for him that he might hang a great millstone around his neck and might be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Temptations to Sin

7 “Woeid to the world for temptations to sin! It is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the man through whom the temptation comes! 8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than having two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter into eternal life with one eye than having two eyes to be thrown into the Gehennaie of fire.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

10See you all do not despiseif one of these little ones. For I say to you all that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.ig 12 What do you all think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them might go astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and after going, search of the one straying? 13 And if he finds it, amen I say to you all, that he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine not having gone astray. 14 So it is not the will in the sight of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

If Your Brother Sins Against You

15 “And if your brother might sin against you, go, convictih him between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listenii, take with you one or two others, in order that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word might stand.ij 17 And if he hears them without taking heed, tell the church. And if he also does not take heed to the church, let him be to you as the Gentile and the tax collector. 18 Amen I say to you all, whatever you all bind on earth will be, after being bound in heavenik, and whatever you all release on earth will be, after having been released in heaven. 19 Again I say to you all that, if two out of you all agree on earth about anything they might ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are, after having been gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.”

The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

21 Then, after coming, Peter said to Him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I will forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.

23 “For this reason, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle an account with his servantsil. 24 And after he was beginning to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talentsim. 25 But not having the means to pay him, the master ordered him to be sold, and his wife, and his children and all that he had and payment to be made. 26 Then the servant, after falling on his knees, was worshipingin him, saying, ‘Have patienceio on me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And after having pity, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But after coming out, that same servant found one of his fellow servants, who was owing him a hundred denariiip, and after seizing him, he was choking him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 Then after falling down, his fellow servant was pleading to him, ‘Have patienceiq on me, and I will pay you.’ 30 And he was not willing, but after going, threw him in prison until he might pay the debt. 31 Then, after seeing what had taken place, his fellow servants were greatly distressed, and after going, they fully explained to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then after summoning him, his master said to him, ‘Evil servant! All that debt I forgave to you because you pleaded with me. 33 And was it not necessaryir for you to be merciful on your fellow servant, as I also had mercy on you?’ 34 And after becoming angry, his master delivered him to the torturers until he might repay all the debt. 35 This also my heavenly Father will do to you all, if you all do not forgiveis your brother from your heart.”

Teaching About Divorce

19 Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, He removed Himself from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 And large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.

3 And the Pharisees came up to Him, testing Him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any accusationit?” 4 And after answering, He said, “Did you not read that after creating from the beginning, He made them male and female?”iu 5 And said, ‘For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?’iv 6 So no longer are they two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separateiw.” 7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Moses, because of yourix hardness of heart, allowed you all to send away your wives, but from the beginning it had not been this way. 9 I say to you all, that whoever might send away his wife, except for illicit sexual intercourse, and might marry to another, commits adulteryiy.”iz

10 The disciples said to Him, “If this is the caseja of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not everyone can receive this word, but to those whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born out of their mother’s womb this way, and there are eunuchs who were castrated by men, and there are eunuchs who castrated themselves for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one being able to receive, receive.”

Let the Children Come to Me

13 Then children were brought to Him in order that He might lay His hands on them and pray, but the disciples admonished them, 14 but Jesus said, Let the little children and do not hinderjb them to come to me, for such is the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And after laying His hands on them, He went away from there.

The Rich Young Man

16 And behold, one, after coming to Him, said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do in order that I might have eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why do you askjc me about what is good? Only one is good, but if you wish to enter into the life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You will not murder, you will not commit adultery, you will not steal, you will not bear false witness, 19 honor your father and mother,jd and, you will love your neighbor as yourself.”je 20 The young man said to Him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfectjf, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you all will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 But after hearing the word, the young man went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Amen, I say to you all that a rich person will difficulty enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you all, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 And after hearing, the disciples were being greatly astonished, saying, “Who then is able to be saved?” 26 But after looking at them, Jesus said, “Withjg men, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Then after answering, Peter said to Him, “See, we left everything and followed you; what then will be for us?” 28 And Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you all, that you all, after following me in the new birthjh, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you all will also sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who left houses or brothers or sisters or fathers or mothers or children or lands because of my name will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and last, first.

Laborers in the Vineyard

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 And after agreeing with his laborers for a denariusji per day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And after going out about the third hour he saw others after having stood idle in the marketplace, 4 and he said to them, ‘You all also go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give to you all.’ 5 And they went. And again going out about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others after having stood and he said to them, ‘Why do you all standjj here idle the whole day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You all also go into the vineyard.’ 8 And when evening came, the master of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ 9 And those hired around the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 And after coming, those hired first thought they would receive more, and each of them also received a denarius. 11 And after receiving, they were grumbling against the master of the house, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borejk the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13 But after answering to one of them, he said ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you and go. And I wish to give this last worker as I also give to you. 15 Or is it not right for me to do what I wish with what belongs to me? Or is your eye evil because I am goodjl?’ 16 So the last will be first and the first, last.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

17 And while going up to Jerusalem, Jesus took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way He said to them, 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death 19 and deliver Him to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and on the third day, He will be raised.”

A Mother's Request

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to Him with her sons and while kneeling, was asking something from Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you want?” She said to Him, “Sayjm that these two sons of mine might sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 And after answering, He said, “You do not know what you all are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to Him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “Indeed, you all will drink from my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, is not mine to give, but to those it has been prepared for by my Father.” 24 And after hearing, the ten were displeased at the two brothers. 25 But after calling them to Him, Jesus said, “You all know that the rulers of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It will not be so among you all, but whoever wishes to be great among you all will be yourjn servantjo, 27 and whoever might wish to be first among you all, he will be yourjp servantjq, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransomjr forjs many.”

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

29 And while they were going out of Jericho, a great crowd followed Him. 30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the roadside after hearing Jesus passing by, cried out saying, “Have mercy on usjt Lord, Son of David!” 31 But the crowd admonished them, in order that they might keep silent, but they cried out even greater, saying, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!” 32 And after stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you all wish I do for you all?” 33 They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes might be opened.” 34 And after being moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed Him.

The Triumphal Entry

21 And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, Go to the village in your sight, and immediately you all will find a donkey having already been tied and a colt with her. After untying them, bring them to me. 3 And if anyone might say anything to you all, you all will say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” 4 This things have taken place in order that the word might be fulfilled through the prophet, saying,

5Say to the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

humble and after having mounted a donkey,

even on a colt, the child of a donkey.’”ju

6 And after going, the disciples did as Jesus appointed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and He sat on them. 8 And most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and were spreading them on the road. 9 And the crowds, while going before Him and following Him were shouting, “Hosannajv to the Son of David! Blessed is He coming in the name of the Lord!jw Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And after entering into Jerusalem, the whole city was shakenjx, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

12 And Jesus entered into the templejy and threw out all those selling and buying in the temple, and He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those selling pigeonsjz. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ka but you all make it a den of robbers.”kb

14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. 15 But after seeing the wonderful things that He did and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” the chief priests and scribes were greatly displeased, 16 and they said to Him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,

“‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies

        you have perfectedkc praise’?”kd

17 And after abandoning them, He went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

18 And in the morning, while He was returning to the city, He was hungry. 19 And after seeing one fig tree on the way, He went to it and found nothing on it except leaves only. And He said to it, “May no fruit come out of you forever!ke and the fig tree withered immediately.

20 And after seeing, the disciples marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither immediately?” 21 And after answering, Jesus said to them, “Amen I say to you all, if you have faith and do not doubtkf, not only will you all do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you all might say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.kg 22 And whatever you all might ask in prayer believing, you all will receive.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 And after entering into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him while teaching, saying, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 And after answering, Jesus said to them,I also will ask you all one question, which if you all tell me, I also will tell you all by what authority I do these things.kh 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they were deliberating in themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you all not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we fear the crowd, for they all hold John as a prophet.” 27 And after answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” And He said to them, “Neither do I tell you all by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “But what do you all think? A man hadki two sons, and after going to the first, he said, ‘Son, go today, work in the vineyard.’ 29 But after answering, he said, ‘I will not,’ but after regretting itkj, he went. 30 And after coming to the other son, he said the same. And after answering, he said, ‘I go, sir,’ and did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen I say to you all, that the tax collectors and the prostitutes go before you all into the kingdom of God. 32 For John came to you all in the way of righteousness, and you all did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And after seeing, you all did not regret it to believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants

33 Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34 And when the time of fruit approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to take his fruit. 35 And after taking his servants, the tenants beat one, killed another and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did the same to them. 37 And afterward he sent to them his son, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But after seeing the son, the tenants said in themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, that we might kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And after taking him, they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 When, therefore, the owner of the vineyard might come, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to Him, “He will miserably destroy those evil men and he will lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you all never read in the Scriptures:

“‘The stone that the builders rejected,

this became the cornerstonekk,

the Lord did this,

and it is wonderful in our eyes’?kl

43 For this reason I say to you all that the kingdom of God will be taken from you all and will be given to a people producing its fruits. 44 And the one after falling on this stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it might fall, it will grind him to powder.”km

45 And after hearing His parables the chief priests and the Pharisees realized that He was speaking about them. 46 And while seeking to arrest Him, they feared the crowds, because they were holding Him to be a prophet.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

22 And after answering, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who made a wedding feast for his son. 3 And he sent his servants to call those after having been invited to the wedding feast, but they were not willing to come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those after having been invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fattened calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ 5 But after not caring, they went away, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 and after seizing his servants, the rest mistreated and killed them. 7 And the king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘Indeed the wedding feast is ready, but those after having been invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite as many as you might find to the wedding feast.’ 10 And after going out into the roads, those servants gathered all whom they found, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But after coming in to look atkn the guests, the king saw there a man not having a wedding garment, 12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how do you come in here not having a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘After binding his hands and feet, throw him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 Then after going, the Pharisees took counsel how they might entrap Him in a word. 16 And they sent to Him, their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and the way of God in truth you teach and you do not care about anyone, for you do not look at the face of a manko. 17 Tell uskp, therefore, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” 18 But after recognizing their wickedness, Jesus said, “Why do you all test me, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius. 20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” 21 They said to Him, “Caesar's.” Then He said to them, Give back, therefore the things that are Caesar's to Caesar and the things of God to God.” 22 And after hearing, they marveled and left Him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 In that day, the Sadducees came to Him saying that, there is no resurrection, and they askedkq Him, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If someone might die, not having children, his brother will marry his widow and will raise up children for his brother.’ 25 And there were with us seven brothers and the first, after marrying, died, and not having children, left his widow to his brother. 26 Likewise also the second and the third, until the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose of the seven will the wife be? For they all had her.”

29 But after answering, Jesus said to them, “You all are wrong, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you all not read what was said to you all by God: 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’kr He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And after hearing, the crowds were astonished at His teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 But after hearing that He silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, askedks a question, testing Him. 36 “Teacher, which commandment is the greatestkt in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “You all will love the Lord your God with allku your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.kv 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You all will love your neighbor as yourself.kw 40 On these two commandments hangkx all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 And after having been gathered together, Jesus askedky the Pharisees a question, 42 saying, “What do you all think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How then, does David in the Spirit call Him Lord, saying,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet”’?kz

45 If then David calls Him Lord, how is He his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor anyone dare from that day to askla Him any more questions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 “On Moses' seat sit the scribes and the Pharisees, 3 therefore whatever they might tell you all, do and observe, but do not dolb their works. For they say and do not do. 4 And they tie up heavy burdens, hard to bearlc, and lay them on shoulders of men, but with their fingers they themselves are not willing to move them. 5 And all their works they do to be seen by men. For they broaden the phylacteriesld and enlarge the fringes of their garments, 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues 7 and the greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbile by men. 8 But you all are not to be calledlf rabbi, for one is your teacher and you all are all brothers. 9 And do not calllg anyone your father on earth, for one is your Father who is in heaven. 10 Neither be calledlh instructorsli, because your instructor is one, the Christ. 11 And the greatest of you all will be your servant. 12 And whoever will exalt himself will be humbled and whoever will humble himself will be exalted.

13 “But woe to you all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you all shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. For you all do not enter nor allow those entering to go in.lj 15 Woe to you all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you all travel across the sea and land to make one proselytelk, and when he becomes a proselyte, you all make him a son of Gehenna twice as much as you all.

16 “Woe to you all, blind guides who are saying, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple after sanctifying the gold? 18 And, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 Blind ones! For which is greater, the gift or the altar after sanctifying the gift? 20 Therefore, after swearing by the altar, he swears by it and everything on it. 21 And after swearing by the temple, he swears by it and by Him dwelling in it. 22 And after swearing by heaven he swears by the throne of God and Him sitting on it.

23 “Woe to you all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you all tithe mint and dill and cuminll, and neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These were necessary to do, not neglecting the others. 24 Blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

25 “Woe to you all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you all clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup, in order that the outside also may be clean.

27 “Woe to you all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you all are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly indeed appear beautiful, but within are full of bones of the dead and all uncleanness. 28 So you all also outwardly indeed appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 “Woe to you all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you all build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we were living in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murderedlm the prophets. 32 And you all fulfill the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, you generation of vipers, how might you all escape from the judgment of Gehenna? 34 For this reason, behold, I send to you all prophets and wise men and scribes, of them you all will kill and crucify, and of them, you all will flogln in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you all may come all the righteous blood after having been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you all murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Amen I say to you all, all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stoner of those after having been sent to it! How often I willed to gather together your children, like a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you all would not! 38 Behold, your house is left to you all desolate. 39 For I say to you all, you all will not seelo from now until you say, ‘Blessed is He coming in the name of the Lord.’”lp

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 And after leaving the temple, Jesus was going and His disciples came to point out to Him the buildings of the temple. 2 But after answering, He said to them, “Do you all not see all of these?lq Amen I say to you all, there will not be leftlr here stone upon stone that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

3 And while sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tellls us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your cominglt and of the completionlu of the age?” 4 And after answering, Jesus said to them, You all see nobody might lead you all astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you all are about to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you all not alarmedlv, for this is necessary to be, but not yet is the end. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes throughout the land. 8 And all these are the beginning of the birth pains.

9 “Then they will deliver you all to the tribulation and kill you all, and you all will be being hated by all the nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many will stumble and will betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he, after enduring to the end, this one will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then will come the end.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “When therefore, you all might see the abomination of desolationlw after being spoken of through Daniel the prophet, after having stood in the holy place (the one reading understand), 16 then those in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 The one on his housetop do not come down to take things out of his house, 18 and the one in the field do not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And woe to women who are pregnantlx and to women who nursing infants in those days! 20 And you all, pray that your escape may not bely in winter nor on a Sabbath. 21 For there will be then great tribulation, such as have not been from the beginning of the world until now nor ever will belz. 22 And if those days were not cut short, not all flesh would be saved. But, for the sake of the elect, those days will be shortened. 23 Then if anyone might say to you all, ‘Behold, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Here!’ do not believema. 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 Behold, I have foretold you all. 26 If therefore, they might say to you all, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go outmb. If they might say, ‘Behold, he is in the private rooms,’ do not believemc. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines until the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its brilliance, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 “And from the fig tree, you all learn its parable: as soon as its branch becomes soft and puts out its leaves, you all know that summer is near. 33 So also you all when you all see all these things, you know that He is near, at the gates. 34 Amen I say to you all, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 The heavens and the earth will pass away, but my words will not pass awaymd.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 “But concerning that day and hour, no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, except the Father only. 37 For as the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark, 39 and they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field, one taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one taken and one left. 42 You all, stay awake, therefore, because you all do not know what day your Lord is coming. 43 But you all know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief comes, he would have stayed awake and would not let his house be broken into. 44 For this reason, you all also must be prepared, because at an hour you do not think the Son of Man comes.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom his master set over his household to give them the food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master, after coming, will find so doing this. 47 Amen I say to you all, that over all his possessions he will set him. 48 But if that wicked servant might say in his heart, ‘My master is late,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunks, 50 the master of that servant will come in a day that he does not anticipate and in an hour he does not know, 51 and he will cut him and put his portion with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who after taking their lamps, went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five wise. 3 For the foolish, after taking their lamps, did not take oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 And as the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and were sleeping. 6 But at midnight there had been a cry, ‘Behold the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there is not enoughme for us and for you all, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 And afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, openmf to us.’ 12 But after answering, he said, ‘Amen I say to you all, I do not know you all.’ 13 Watch therefore, because you do not know the day nor the hour.

The Parable of the Talents

14 “For it is just like a man traveling in a far country who called his own servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 And to one he gave five talentsmg, and to another two, and to another one, to each according to his ability. And immediately he went abroad. 16 After going, he after receiving five talents traded with them and profited another five. 17 Likewise, he who had two talents profited another two. 18 But he, after receiving the one talent, after going, dug in the ground and hid the money of his master. 19 And after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And after coming forward, he after receiving the five talents brought five other talents, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, five more talents I profited.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Over a little you were being faithful; over much I will appoint you. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And after coming, he also receiving two talents said, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, two more talents I profited.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Over a little you were being faithful; over much I will appoint you. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 And after coming, he also after having received the one talent said, ‘Master, I knew you are a hardmh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter, 25 and after fearing, I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ 26 And after answering, his master said to him, ‘Evil and slothful servant! Haven’t you known that I reap where I have not sown and gathered where I have not scattered? 27 It was necessary then for you to invest my money with the bankers, and after coming I receive what was my own with interest. 28 Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one having ten talents. 29 For to everyone having, more will be given, and he will abound. But from the one not having, even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And the worthless servant, throw into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’

The Final Judgment

31 “And when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 And He will gather before Him all the nations, and He will separate them from one another as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And He will indeed place the sheep on His right and the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, those after having been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom after having been prepared for you all from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you all gave me food, I was thirsty and you all gave me drink, I was a stranger and you all welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you all clothed me, I was sick and you all visited me, I was in prison and you all came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungering and feed you, or thirsting and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And after answering, the King will say to them, ‘Amen I say to you all, as much as you all did to one of the least of these, my brothers, you did it to me.’

41 “Then He will also say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, those after having been cursed into the eternal fire after having been prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you all did not give me food, I was thirsty and you all did not give me drink, 43 I was a stranger and you all did not welcome me, naked and you all did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you all did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungering or thirsting or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then He will answer to them, saying, ‘Amen I say to you all, as much as you all did not do to one of the least of these, you did not do to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples, 2 “You all know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to be crucified.”

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, being called Caiaphas, 4 and they deliberated together in order to that they might arrest Jesus by subtletymi and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, “Not during the feast, in order that there might not be an uproar among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6 And Jesus, after being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came up to Him having an alabaster vessel of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at table. 8 And after seeing, the disciples were very displeased, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this was able to be sold for much and to be given to the poor.” 10 But after realizing, Jesus said to them, “Why do you all cause trouble for the woman? For a beautiful work she did to me. 11 For the poor you all will always have with you, but me you all will not always have. 12 For this woman, after pouring this ointment on my body, did it for my burial. 13 Amen I say to you all, wherever this gospel might be proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman did will also be told in memory of her.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve, being called Judas Iscariot, after going to the chief priests 15 said, “What do you all wish to give me if I deliver Him over to you all?” And they established with him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from then he was seeking an opportunity that he might betray Him.

The Passover with the Disciples

17 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you wish we prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, Go into the city to such a man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is near, with you I make the Passover with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 And after it was evening, He reclined at table with the twelve 21 and while they were eating, He said, “Amen I say to you all, one of you all will betray me.” 22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful and began to say to Him one after another, “Not I, Lord?” 23 And after answering, He said, “He after dipping his hand in the dish with me, this one will betray me. 24 Indeed the Son of Man goes as it is written about Him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It ismj better for that man if he was not born.” 25 But after answering, Judas the betrayermk said to Him, “Not I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You said.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

26 And while they were eating, Jesus took bread and after blessing it broke it and after giving it to the disciples, He said, Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And after taking a cup, and after given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant being poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I say to you all, I will not drinkml from now of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you all in the kingdom of my Father.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You all will be offended because of me in this night, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’mm 32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you all into Galilee.” 33 But after answering, Peter said to Him, “If all will be offended because of you, I will never be offended.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you that in this night before the rooster crows, you will completely denymn me three times.” 35 Peter said to Him, “Even if it is necessary for me to die with you, I will not denymo you!” All the disciples said likewise.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place being called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, Sit here, while I gomp over there and pray.” 37 And after taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then He said to them, “Exceedingly sorrowful is my soul even to death; remain here, and keep watch with me.” 39 And after going a little farther, He fell on His face and while praying, said, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup passmq from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and He found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, “So you all were not strong enoughmr to watch one hour with me? 41 Watch and pray in order that you all may not enterms into temptation. Indeed the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time after going away, He prayed, saying, “My Father, if this is not able to pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And after coming again, He found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavymt. 44 And after leaving them again, after going away, He prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “You all sleep and take your rest now. Behold, the hour has drawn near and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, we should go. Behold, my betrayer has drawn near.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 And while He was still speaking, behold Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 And the betrayer gave them a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And immediately after coming up to Jesus he said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he fervently kissedmu Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?” Then, after coming up, they laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. 51 And behold, one of those with Jesus, after stretching out his hand, drew his sword, and after striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, Put your sword back into its place. For all those after taking the sword perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I am not able to appealmv to my Father, and He will at once provide me more than twelve legionsmw of angels? 54 How then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it is necessary to be so?” 55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “As against a robber you all came out with swords and clubs to capture me? Daily I was sitting in the temple teaching, and you all did not seize me. 56 But all this has taken place in order that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples after leaving Him, fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 And those after seizing Jesus brought Him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered. 58 And Peter was following Him from a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and after going inside he was sitting with the guards to see the end. 59 And the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might kill Him. 60 And they did not find any, after many false witnesses came forward. And at last two, after coming forward, 61 said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And after standing up, the chief priest said to Him, “Do you not answer what these men testify against you?” 63 But Jesus was keeping silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I urge you according the living God that you might tell us if you are the Christ the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, You say. But I say to you all from now on you all will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the chief priest tore his robes, saying, “He blasphemed! What more witnesses do we have need of? Behold, now you all heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you all think?” And after answering, they said, “He is guilty of death.” 67 Then they spit in His face and struck Him. And some slapped Him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us Christ. Who is the one striking you?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 And Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and one servant girl came up to him saying, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before all of them, saying, “I do not know what you say.” 71 And after coming out to the entrance, another saw him, and said to those there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 And after a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your speech makes you evident.” 74 Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, three times you will deny me.” And after coming out, he wept bitterly.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

27 And after morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to kill Him. 2 And after binding Him, they led Him away and delivered Him over to Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

3 Then after seeing He was condemned, Judas His betrayer, after changing his mind, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned after betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” 5 And after throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and after going, hung himself. 6 But the chief priests, after taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to throw them into the treasury since it is blood money.” 7 And after taking counsel, they bought with them the potter's field to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field was called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him whom after having been appraised was valued by the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”mx

Jesus Before Pilate

11 And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said, You say.” 12 But when He was accused by the chief priests and the elders, He answered nothing. 13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 And He did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 And at the feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd whom they were wishing. 16 And they were having then a notorious prisoner being called Jesus Barabbas. 17 Then after having been gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you wish I might release to you all: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus being called Christ?” 18 For he knew that because of envymy they delivered Him over. 19 But while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I suffered much today in a dream because of Him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd that they might ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 And after answering, the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you wish I release to you all?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “What then should I do with Jesus being called Christ?” They all said, “Let Him be crucifiedmz!” 23 And he said, “For what evil did He do?” But they were crying out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

24 And after seeing that he gained nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, Pilate after taking water, washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man's blood, you all see to it yourselves.” 25 And after answering, all the people said, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released to them Barabbas, and after scourgingna Jesus, delivered Him in order that He be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 Then the soldiers of the governor after taking Jesus into the governor’s praetoriumnb, gathered the whole battalionnc before Him. 28 And after stripping Him, they put a scarlet robe on Him, 29 and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed in His right hand. And after kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And after spitting on Him they took the reed and were striking him on the head. 31 And when they mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe and put His own clothes on Him and led Him away to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

32 And while going out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon. They compellednd this man in order the he might carry His cross. 33 And after coming to a place being called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered to Him wine to drink, after having been mixed with gallne, and after tasting He would not drink it. 35 And after crucifying Him, they divided His garments for themselves by casting lotsnf. 36 And while sitting down they were keeping watch over Him there. 37 And they put over His head His charge, written, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then crucified with Him were two robbers, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those while passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You destroying the temple and rebuilding it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 Likewise also, the chief priests while mocking Him with the scribes and elders were saying, 42 “He saved others, Himself He is not able to save. He is the King of Israel; let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver Him now, if He desires Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 And the same way also, the robbers after being crucified with Him were reviling Him.

The Death of Jesus

45 And from the sixth hourng there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hournh. 46 And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried outni with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”nj that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”nk 47 And some of the bystanders, after hearing, were saying, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And immediately after running, one of them after taking a sponge, after filling it with vinegar, and after putting it on a reed was giving it to Him to drink. 49 But the others were saying, “Let it be, we might see if Elijah will come to save Him.” 50 And Jesus again cried out in a loud voice and yielded up the spirit.

51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn from top to bottom in two, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split. 52 And the tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints after having fallen asleep were raised, 53 and after coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 And the centurion and those with him while keeping watch over Jesus after seeing the earthquake and what took place, they were exceedingly afraid, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

55 And many women were there, looking on from a distance who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 And after it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man, after going to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given. 59 And Joseph after taking the body, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he cut in the rock. And after rolling a great stone to the entrance of the tomb, he went away. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 And the next day, that is after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 saying, “Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while living, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Order therefore to secure the tomb until the third day, so that after coming His disciples do not steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He was raised from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You all have a guardnl. Go, secure it as you know how.” 66 And after going, they secured the tomb after sealing the stone with the guard.

The Resurrection

28 And after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the weeknm, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended out of heaven and after coming, rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. 3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him, the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 And after answering, the angel said to the women, “Do not fearnn, for I know that you all seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for He rose as He said. Come, see the place where Heno was lying. 7 And quickly after going, say to His disciples that He was raised from the dead, and behold, He is going before you all to Galilee; there you all will see Him. Behold, I have told you all.” 8 So after going quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to announce to His disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them saying, “Greetings!” And after coming up, they took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not fearnp; go announce to my brothers that they should go to Galilee, there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard

11 And while they were going, behold, some of the guard after going into the city, announced to the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And after assembling with the elders and after taking counsel, they gave sufficient money to the soldiers 13 saying, “Say, ‘His disciples after coming in night, stole Him away while we were sleeping.’ 14 And if this is heard by the governor, we will persuade him and we will make you all secure.” 15 And after taking the money, they did as they were taught. And this story was spread among the Jews to this day.

The Great Commission

16 And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus appointed them. 17 And after seeing Him, they worshiped, but some doubted. 18 And after coming, Jesus said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth was given to me. 19 After going, therefore make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to keep all that I have commanded you all. And behold, I am with you all all the days until completion of the age.”
