According to Marka
John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it has been written in Isaiah the prophet,
“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way,b
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make His paths straight,’”c
4 John the Baptist appearedd in the wilderness proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 And John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he was preaching, saying, “There comes one mightier than I after me whom I am not worthy, after stooping down, to untie the strap of His sandals. 8 I baptized you all in water, but He will baptize you all in the Holy Spirit.”
The Baptism of Jesus
9 And in those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit like a dove descending on Him, 11 and a voice came out of heaven, “You are my beloved Sone; in you I am well pleasedf.”
The Temptation of Jesus
12 And immediately the Spirit drove Him out into the wilderness. 13 And He was in the wilderness forty days being testedg by Satanh, and He was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to Him.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
14 And after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time has been fulfilled and the kingdom of God has drawn near, repenti and believe in the gospel.”
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
16 And while passing by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Come, follow after me, and I will make you all to be fishers of men.” 18 And immediately after leaving their nets they followed Him. 19 And after going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother also in their boat repairing the nets, 20 and immediately He called them. And after leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they followed after Him.
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath, after coming into the synagogue, He was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He was teaching them as one having authority and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, 24 saying, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know you, who you are, the Holy One of God.” 25 And Jesus reprimanded him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And after convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they all were amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! Even the unclean spirits He commands, and they obey Him.” 28 And His fame spread immediately everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many
29 And immediately leaving the synagogue, He entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 And Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with fever, and immediately they told Him about her. 31 And after coming and taking her by the hand, He lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she was serving them.
32 And after it was evening, at sundown, they were bringing to Him all having sickness and being oppressed by demonsj. 33 And the whole city was gathering together at the door. 34 And He healed many having sickness with various diseases, and cast out many demons, and was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew Him.
Jesus Preaches in Galilee
35 And after rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He was praying. 36 And Simon and those with him searched for Him, 37 and they found Him and said to Him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And He said to them, “We go elsewhere to the next towns in order that I may preach there, for this reason I came out.” 39 And He went preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and was casting out demons.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
40 And a leper came to him, imploring Him, and kneeling and saying to Him, “If you wish, you are able to cleanse me.” 41 And after being moved with compassion and stretching out His hand, He touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him and he was made clean. 43 And after sternly charging him, immediately He sent him away, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded for a testimony to them.” 45 But after going out, he began to preach often and to spread the news, so that He was not able to openly enter a city, but was out in desolate places, and they were coming to Him from all sides.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
2 And after returning again into Capernaum after some days, it was reported that He was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door, and He was telling them the word. 3 And they came, after bringing to Him a paralytic being carried by four men. 4 And not being able to come near Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof where He was, and after opening it up, they let down the bed where the paralytic was lying. 5 And after seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 But some of the scribes were sitting and deliberating in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who is able to forgive sins except God only?” 8 And immediately Jesus, after perceiving in His spirit that they debated in themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and take up your bed and walk’? 10 But in order that you all may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth” —He said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go to your home.” 12 And he rose and immediately after picking up his bed, he went out before them all, so that they were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
Jesus Calls Levi
13 And He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them. 14 And while passing by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow me.” And after rising, he followed Him.
15 And as He reclined at table in His house and many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples, for there were many and they were following Him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees after seeing that He was eating with sinners and tax collectors, were saying to His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And after hearing it, Jesus said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
A Question About Fasting
18 And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Are the wedding guests able to fast while the bridegroom is with them?k As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they are not able to fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
23 And it came to pass on the Sabbath, He was going through the grainfields, and His disciples began to make their way while plucking heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing on the Sabbath what is not lawful?” 25 And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry, he and those with him: 26 how he entered into the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which is illegal except for the priests to eat, and also gave to those who were with him?” 27 And He was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore, the Son of Man is lord also of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
3 And He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man having a withered hand. 2 And they were watchingl Him, if on the Sabbath He would heal him in order that they might accuse Him. 3 And He said to the man having the withered hand, “Come here.”m 4 And He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save lifen or to kill?” But they were being silent. 5 And after looking around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 And after coming out, the Pharisees immediately were giving counsel with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.
A Great Crowd Follows Jesus
7 And Jesus with His disciples withdrew to the sea, and a great multitude followed from Galilee and from Judea 8 and from Jerusalem and from Idumea and beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. Hearing all that He was doing, the great multitude came to Him. 9 And He said to His disciples that a boat should wait on Him because of the crowd, in order that they might not crush Him, 10 for He had healed many, therefore they pressed around Him that they might touch Him all who were having diseases. 11 And the unclean spirits whenever they were seeing Him, they were falling down before Him and were crying out, saying, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And He was strictly ordering them in order that they might not make Him known.
The Twelve Apostles
13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those whom He was wishing for and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve (whom He also named apostles) in order that they might be with Him and He might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to cast out demons. 16 And He appointed the twelve: He added the name Simon to Peter; 17 and James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, He also added to them the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder; 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
20 And they went home and the crowd gathered again so that they were not able to even eat bread. 21 And after hearing, His familyo came out to seize Him, for they were saying, “He is out of His mind.”
Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
22 And the scribes, after coming down from Jerusalem, were saying, “He has Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons He casts out the demons.” 23 And after calling them to Him, He was speaking to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom is not able to stand.p 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan rose up against himself and is divided, he is not able to stand, but has an end. 27 But no one is able, after entering a strong man's house, to plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.
28 “Amen I say to you all that all sins will be forgiven to the children of men and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, he does not have forgiveness forever, but is guiltyq of an eternal sin” — 30 because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Jesus' Mother and Brothers
31 And His mother and His brothers came and standing outside they sent to Him calling Him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside seeking you.” 33 And after answering them, He said, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And after looking around at those sitting around Him, He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, this one is my brother and sister and mother.”
The Parable of the Sower
4 And again He began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered around Him, so that after embarking on a boat, He sat on the sea, and all the crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And He was teaching them in many parables and He was saying to them in His teaching: 3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And it came to pass as he sowed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 And other fell on rocky ground, where it was not having much earth, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of earth. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 And other fell among thorns, and the thorns rose up and choked it, and it produced no fruit. 8 And other fell on good earth and produced fruit, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and one hundredfold.” 9 And He was saying, “He who has ears to hear, hear.”
The Purpose of the Parables
10 And when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve were asking Him about the parables. 11 And He was saying to them, “To you all has been given the mysteryr of the kingdom of God, but to those outside everything is in parables, 12 in order that
“seeing, they might see but not perceive,
and hearing, they might hear and not understand,
lest they should turn and be forgiven.”s
13 And He said to them, “Do you all not understand this parable, and how will you all understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown and when they might hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word after having been sown in them. 16 And these are the ones being sown on the rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy, 17 and do no root in themselves, but are temporary. Then, after tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they stumble. 18 And others are the ones being sown among thorns. They are the ones after hearing the word, 19 and the distractionst of the erau and the deceitfulness of riches and the lustv for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 And those after being sown good earth, who hear the word and receive it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and one hundredfold.”
A Lamp Under a Basket
21 And He was saying to them, “Is a lamp brought in that it might be put under a basket, or under a bed? Not that it might be put on a stand? 22 For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest, nor is anything kept secret except to come into sight. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, hear.” 24 And He was saying to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you all measure with, it will be measured to you all, and more will be added to you all. 25 For who has, it will be given to him, and who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.”
The Parable of the Seed Growing
26 And He was saying, “This is the kingdom of God, as a man might throw seed on the earth, 27 and might sleep and rises night and day, and the seed might sprout and grow, how he does not know. 28 Automatically, the earth bears fruit first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the fruit might be brought forth, immediately he sends out the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 And He was saying, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we appoint it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which when sown on the earth is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 and when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and makes large branches, so that the birds of the heavens are able to nest in its shade.”
33 And with many such parables, He was speaking the word to them, as they were able to hear. 34 But without a parable, He was not speaking to them, but privately to His own disciples, He was explaining everything.
Jesus Calms a Storm
35 And He said to them in that day, after it was evening, “We should go across to the other side.” 36 And after leaving the crowd, they took Him with them as He was in the boat. And other boats were with Him. 37 And a great stormw of wind arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 And He was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” x 39 And after waking, He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peacey! Be stillz!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great tranquility. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you all afraid? Do you all not yet have faith?” 41 And they feared with great fear and were saying to one another, “Who then is this that also the wind and the sea obey Him?”
Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon
5 And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenesaa. 2 And after disembarking the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had residence among the tombs. And not even with a chain could anyone bind him anymore, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and he wrenched apart the chains and has broken the shackles in pieces. And no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 And always night and day, among the tombs and on the mountains he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And after seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down before Him 7 and after crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjureab you by God, do not tormentac me.” 8 For He was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion, because we are many.” 10 And he was begging him earnestly that He not sendad them out of the country. 11 And there was there on the hillside a great herd of pigs feeding, 12 and they begged Him, saying, “Send usae into the pigs, that we may enter into them.” 13 And He permitted them. And after coming out, the unclean spirits entered into the pigs and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea (about two thousand) and were drowning in the sea.
14 And the herdsmen fled and announced it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting, after having been clothed and in his right mind, after having had the legion, and they were afraid. 16 And they described it to them, those after seeing it; what happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Him to depart from their region. 18 And while He was embarking into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons was begging Him, that he might be with Him. 19 And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go to your home to your friends and announce to them how much the Lord has done for you, and had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus did for him, and everyone was marveling.
Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter
21 And Jesus, after crossing in the boat again to the other side, a great crowd gathered about Him, and He was beside the sea. 22 And one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name, and after seeing Him, fell at His feet 23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of deathaf. After coming, you might lay your hands on her, in order that she may be savedag and live.” 24 And He went with him.
And a great crowd was following Him and was pressing Him. 25 And a woman having a flow of blood for twelve years 26 and after suffering much under many physicians, and spending all that she had and being no better, but grew much worse, 27 after hearing about Jesus, after coming up in the crowd behind Him, she touched His garment. 28 For she was saying, “If I touch even His garments, I will be saved.”ah 29 And immediately the flow of her blood dried up and she knew in her body that she had been healed of her disease. 30 And immediately Jesus, after fully knowing in Himself power went outai from Him, after turning around in the crowd, was saying, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pushing you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 And He was looking around to see who did it. 33 But the woman, after fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you, go in peaceaj, and be healed of your disease.”
35 While He was still speaking, there came from the ruler of the synagogue some saying, “Your daughter died. Why further trouble the Teacher?” 36 But Jesus, after ignoringak the word being spoken, said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fearal, only believe.” 37 And He did not allow anyone to follow along with Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 And they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and He saw a commotion and weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And after entering He said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they were laughing at Him. But after throwing them all outside, He took with Him the father and mother of the child and those with Him and went to where the child was. 41 And after taking the hand of the child, He said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is being interpreted, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and was walking around (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately amazed with great amazement. 43 And He strictly commanded them that no one should know this, and He said to give her something to eat.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
6 And He went away from there and came to His hometown, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And on the Sabbath He began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing were being astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? And what is the wisdom givenam to Him? And how are such mighty works done by His hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” And they were offendedan by Him. 4 And Jesus was saying to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And He was not able to do there any mighty works, except after laying hands on a few sick people, He healed them. 6 And He was marveling because of their unbelief.
And He was going around, circling the villages teaching.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
7 And He called the twelve and He began to send them out two by two, and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 And He charged them that they take nothing for their journey except only a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but after having strapped on sandals and not to put onao two tunicsap. 10 And He was saying to them, “Whenever you enter a house, remain there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place does not receive you all and they will not listen to you all while leaving from that place, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony to them.” 12 And after going out, they preached that people should repentaq. 13 And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many who were sick and were healing them.
The Death of John the Baptist
14 And King Herod heard of it, (for His name was spread abroad), and they were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead and for this reason these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” 15 But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” And others were saying, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets.” 16 But after hearing, Herod was saying, “John, who I beheaded, this man has been raised.” 17 For Herod himself, after sending, seized John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he married her. 18 For John had was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.” 19 And Herodias was having a grudge against him and was wishing to kill him and was not able. 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he was keeping him safe. And after hearing him, he was greatly perplexed, and gladly was hearing him.
21 And an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday made a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 And after coming in and dancing, the daughter of Herodias pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the little girl, “Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore greatly to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And after going out, she said to her mother, “What should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And after coming in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying, “I wish that at once you give to me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry because of the oaths and the guests, he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner commanded to bring his head. And after going, he beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the little girl, and the little girl gave it to her mother. 29 And after hearing, his disciples came and took his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
30 And the apostles returned to Jesus and announced to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a little.” For many were coming and going, and they were not having leisure time to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. 33 And many saw them going and recognizedar them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there before them. 34 And after coming out, He saw a great crowd and He had compassion on them because they were like sheep not having a shepherd, and He began to teach them many things. 35 And when it grew late, His disciples, after coming, were saying to Him, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 Send them awayas in order that after going into the surrounding countryside and villages, they might buy themselves something to eat.” 37 And after answering, He said to them, “You all give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “After going, shall we buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 And He said to them, “How many loaves do you all have? Go see.” And after finding out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 And He commanded them all to sit down in groupsat on the green grass. 40 And they sat down in rows by hundreds and by fifties. 41 And after taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He said a blessing and broke the loaves and was giving them to His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 And those after eating the loaves were five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Water
45 And immediately He compelled His disciples to embark into the boat and go before Him to the other side to Bethsaida while He dismissed the crowd. 46 And after saying goodbye to them, He went up on the mountain to pray. 47 And when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land, 48 after seeing them making headway painfully, for the wind was opposing them. About the fourth watch of the nightau, He came to them, walking on the sea and was wishing to pass by them. 49 But after seeing Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them, and He said to them, “Have courage; I am. Do not be afraidav.” 51 And He went up to them in the boat, and the wind ceased. And they were exceedingly vehemently astounded in themselves, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret
53 And after crossing over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And after getting out of the boat, immediately after recognizing Him, 55 the people ran around that whole region and began to bring those having sickness on their beds to wherever they were hearing that He was. 56 And wherever He came, in villages, cities, or in the countryside, they were laying the sick in the marketplaces and begging Him that they might touch even the fringe of His garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
Traditions and Commandments
7 And the Pharisees gathered to Him and some of the scribes after coming from Jerusalem, 2 and after seeing some of His disciples eat bread with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they with a fist they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they baptize themselves. And there are many other traditions that they received to hold onto, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes askedaw Him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but with defiled hands eat the bread?” 6 And He said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you all hypocrites, as it is written,
“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ax
8 After leaving the commandment of God, you all hold to the tradition of men.”
9 And He was saying to them, “How well you all reject the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’;ay and, ‘The one speaking evil of his father or mother must surely dieaz.’ba 11 But you all say, ‘If a man might tell his father or his mother, “Whatever you all might profit from me is Corbanbb“’ (that is, given to God) — 12 no longer do you all permit him to do anything for his father or motherbc, 13 invalidating the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you all do.”
What Defiles a Person
14 And after calling the people to Him again, He was saying to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 nothing is outside of a man going into him that is able to defile him, but the things that are coming out of a man are what are defiling him.”bd 17 And when He entered into a house away from the crowd, His disciples were asking Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, “Then also are you all without understanding? Do you all not perceive that whatever is going into a man from outside is not able to defile him, 19 since it does not enter into his heart but into the stomach, and goes out in the latrine, cleaning all the meats?” 20 And He was saying, “What is coming out of a man, that defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of the man come evil thoughts, illicit sexual intercourse, theft, murder, 22 adultery, coveting, wickednessbe, deceit, sensualitybf, envy, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile the man.”

And she was asking Him that He cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And He was saying to her, “First permit the children to be fed, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered and said to Him, “Lord; even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.” 29 And He said to her, “For this saying, go; the demon has come out of your daughter.” 30 And after going to her home, she found the child after having being thrown in bed and the demon having gone.

But the more He was commanding them, the more zealously they were proclaiming it. 37 And they were very exceedingly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well. And the deaf He makes hear and the mute speak.”

8 In those days, again there being a great crowd, and they were not having something they might eat, after calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, 2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because already three days they remain with me and do not have something they might eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way.bh And some of them have come from far away.” 4 And His disciples answered Him, “How can someone feed these people with bread here in the wilderness?” 5 And He was asking them, “How much bread do you all have?” And they said, “Seven.” 6 And He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. And after taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, He broke them and was giving them to His disciples that they should set them before the people; and they set them before the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish. And after blessing them, He said also to set these before them. 8 And they ate and were satisfied and they took up the extra broken pieces, seven baskets. 9 And there were about four thousand people. And He sent them away. 10 And immediately after embarking into the boat with His disciples, He came to the district of Dalmanuthabi.
The Pharisees Demand a Sign
11 And the Pharisees came and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12 And after sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod
14 And they forgot to bring bread, and they only had one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And He was commanding them saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” 16 And they were discussing with one another that they had no bread. 17 And after becoming aware, He said to them, “Why are you all discussing that you all have no bread? Do you all not yet perceive, nor understand? Do you all have hardened hearts? 18 Having eyes do you all not see, and having ears do you all not hear? And do you all not remember 19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you all take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” 20 “When the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you all take up?” And they said to Him, “Seven.” 21 And He was saying to them, “Do you all not yet understand?”

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
31 And He began to teach them that it is necessary the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and to be killed, and after three days, to rise again. 32 And He was plainly saying the word. And after taking Him aside, Peter began to reprimand Him. 33 But after turning and seeing His disciples, He reprimanded Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! Because you are not exercising your mindbk on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
34 And after calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wishes to follow after me, completely denybl himself and take up his cross and followbm me. 35 For whoever wishes to save his soulbn will lose it, but whoever loses his soul on account of me and the gospel will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and to forfeitbo his soul? 37 For what can a man give in exchangebp for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
9 And He was saying to them, “Amen I say to you all, that there are some after having stood here who will not tastebq death until they see the kingdom of God after having come in power.”
The Transfiguration
2 And after six days Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And He was transformedbr before them, 3 and His clothes became radiant, exceedingly white, such as no cloth refiner on earth is able to bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And after answering, Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbibs, it is good we are here, and we should make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what he should answer, for they were terrified. 7 And there was a cloud overshadowingbt them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; you all listen to Him.” 8 And suddenly, after looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus only with them.
9 And while they were coming down the mountain, he commanded them they should recountbu to no one what they saw until the Son of Man rose from the dead. 10 And they kept the saying to themselves, discussing what it means to rise from the dead. 11 And they were asking Him, saying, “The scribes say that it is necessary Elijah come first?” 12 And He said to them, “Elijah indeed, after coming first, restores all things. And how is it written about the Son of Man that He should suffer many things and be despised? 13 But I say you all that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they were wishing, as it is written of him.”
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
14 And after coming to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes debating with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd after seeing Him, were greatly amazed and while running up to Him were greeting Him. 16 And He asked them, “What are you debating about with them?” 17 And one out of the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, having a mute spirit. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him downbv, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. And I asked your disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not strong enough.” 19 And after answering them, He said, “O faithless generation, how long will I be with you all? How long will I to put up with you all? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought him to Him. And after seeing Him, the spirit immediately convulsed him and he fell on the ground while rolling around, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus askedbw his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often it even throws him into fire and into water that it might destroy him. But if you can do anything, helpbx us after having compassion on us.” 23 But Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible to the one believing.” 24 Immediately after crying out, the father of the child was saying, “I believe; helpby my unbelief!” 25 And after seeing that a crowd came running together, Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never again enter into him.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and he was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But after taking him by the hand, Jesus lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And after entering into the house, His disciples asking Him privately, “Why were we not able to cast it out?” 29 And He said to them, “This kind is not able to be driven out by anything except in prayer.”
Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection
30 And after going on from there, they were passing through Galilee. And He was not wishing that anyone should know, 31 for He was teaching His disciples and was saying to them, “The Son of Man is delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, after three days, He will rise.” 32 But they were not understanding the saying, and were afraid to ask Him.
Who Is the Greatest?
33 And they came to Capernaum. And after being in the house He was asking them, “What were you all discussing on the way?” 34 But they were keeping silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another who is the greatest. 35 And after sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And after taking a child, He stood him in the midst of them, and after taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such a child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, does not receives me but Him who sentbz me.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us
38 John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone in your name casting out demons and we were stopping him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop himca, for there is no one who will do a mighty work in my name and will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For who is not against us is for us. 41 For whoever gives you all a cup of water to drink in my name because you all are of Christ, amen I say to you all that he will never losecb his reward.
Temptations to Sin
42 “And whoever might offend one of these little ones believing in me, it is better for him if a great millstone is hung around his neck and he had been thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sincc, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into eternal life crippled than having two hands to go into Gehennacd, to the unquenchable firece. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into eternal life lame than having two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,cf 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenchedcg.’ 49 For everyone will be salted with fire.ch 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltinessci, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
Teaching About Divorce
10 And after arising from there, He went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to Him again. And again, as was His custom, He was teaching them.
2 And after coming up, the Pharisees were asking Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce a wife?” testing Him. 3 But after answering, He said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses commanded to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “Because of yourcj hardness of heart he wrote to you all this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘He made them male and female.’ck 7 ‘Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and will be joinedcl to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’cm So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God joined together, let not man separatecn.”
10 And in the house the disciples were asking Him again about this matter. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
Let the Children Come to Me
13 And they were bringing to Him children that He might touch them, but the disciples admonished them. 14 But after seeing it, Jesus was greatly irritated and said to them, “Allow the children come to me; do not restrainco them, for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Amen I say to you all, whoever does not receivecp the kingdom of God like a child, will never entercq into it.” 16 And after taking them in His arms, He was blessing them, while laying His hands on them.
The Rich Young Man
17 And while He was going out on the way, a man after running up and kneeling before Him was asking Him, “Good Teacher, what should I do in order that I inheritcr eternal life?” 18 But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraudcs, Honor your father and mother.’”ct 20 But he said to Him, “Teacher, all these I kept from my youth.” 21 But Jesus, after looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 After being disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
23 And after looking around, Jesus said to His disciples, “How difficultly those having wealth will enter into the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus again, after answering, said to them, “Children, how difficult it iscu to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, saying to themselves, “Who is able to be saved?” 27 After looking at them, Jesus said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we left everything and have followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Amen I say to you all. There is no one who left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the coming age, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”
Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time
32 And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them, and they were amazed, and those following were afraid. And after taking the twelve with Himself again, He began to tell them what was about to happen to Him, 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise.”
The Request of James and John
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Him saying to Him, “Teacher, we wish that whatever we might ask you, you do for us.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you all wish I might do for you?” 37 And they said to Him, “Give to us, that we might sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You all do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you all will drink, and the baptism with which I am baptized, you all will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to give, but for those it has been prepared for.” 41 And after hearing, the ten began to be displeased at James and John. 42 And after calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not so among you all. But whoever wishes to be great among you all will be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes among you all to be first will be slavecv of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom forcw many.”
Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus
46 And they came into Jericho. And while leaving Jericho with His disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And after hearing that it is Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and to say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercycx on me!” 48 And many were rebuking him, that he should be silent. But he was crying out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And after stopping, Jesus said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Have courage. Get up; He is calling you.” 50 And after throwing off his cloak and springing up, he came to Jesus. 51 And after answering Jesus said, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “Rabbi, that I may recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has saved you.” And immediately he recovered his sight and was following Him on the way.
The Triumphal Entry
11 And when they drew near to Jerusalem to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you all, and immediately while you are all entering into it, you all will find a colt after having been tied, on which no man ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you all doing this?’ you all say, ‘The Lord has need of it and immediately He sends it here again.’” 4 And they went away and found a colt after having been tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those after having stood there were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they said to them as Jesus said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches after cutting them from the fields. 9 And those going before and those following were crying out, “Hosannacy! Blessedcz is He coming in the name of the Lord!da 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”
11 And He entered into Jerusalem into the temple, and after looking around at everything and already the hour was late, He went into Bethany with the twelve.
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
12 And on the following day, after coming out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And after seeing a fig tree from a distance having leaves, He went if possibly He will find anything on it. And after coming to it, He found nothing except leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And after answering, He said to it, “Hereafter forever from you may no one eat fruit.” And His disciples were hearing.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
15 And they came to Jerusalem. And after entering into the temple, He began to throw out those selling and those buying in the temple, and He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those selling pigeonsdb. 16 And He was not allowing that anyone might carry anything through the temple. 17 And He was teaching and saying to them, “Has it not been written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? dcdd But you all will make it a den of robbers.” de 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard and were seeking how they might destroy Him, for they were fearing Him, for all the crowd was astonished at His teaching. 19 And when evening came, theydf were going out of the city.
The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree
20 And while they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree after having been withered away to its roots. 21 And after remembering, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 And after answering, Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 Amen I say to you all that whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubtdg in his heart, but believes that what he says will be, it will be done for him. 24 For this reason I say to you all, whatever you all pray, asking for yourselves, believe that you all receive, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you all stand praying, forgive, if you all have anything against anyone, in order that even your Father who is in heaven may forgive you all your transgressionsdh.”
The Authority of Jesus Challenged
27 And they came again into Jerusalem. And while walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him, 28 and they were saying to Him, “By what authority do you do these things, or who gave you this authority that you might do them?” 29 But Jesus said to them, “I will ask you all one question; and answer me, and I will tell you all by what authority I do these things. 30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they were discussing it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you all not believe him?’di 32 But should we say, ‘From man’?” —they were fearing the crowd, for they all were holding that John really was a prophet. 33 And after answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither I tell you all by what authority I do these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants
12 And He began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went abroad. 2 And he sent to the tenants in season a servant that he might receive from the tenants the fruit of the vineyard. 3 And after taking him, they beat him and sent him away empty. 4 And again he sent to them another servant. Likewise, they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and they killed him, and many others; some they beat and some they killed. 6 Still he had one beloved son. He sent him last to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, we should kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And after taking him, they killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What then will the master of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you all not read this Scripture:
“‘The stone which the builders rejected
this become the head of the corner,
11 this was for the Lord,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”dj
12 And they were seeking to arrest Him, and feared the crowd, for they perceived that He spoke the parable against them. And after leaving Him, they went away.
Paying Taxes to Caesar
13 And they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians in order that they might entrap Him in a word. 14 And after coming, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone, for you do not look on the face of a man,dk but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” 15 But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, “Why do you all test me? Bring me a denariusdl that I might look at it.” 16 And they brought one. And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar's.” 17 And Jesus said to them, “The things that are Caesar's, give back to Caesar and the things of God to God.” And they were marveling at Him.
The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection
18 And Sadducees came to Him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they were asking Him, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife and leaves no child, his brother should take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.dm 20 There were seven brothers, and the first took a wife, and dying, left no offspring. 21 And the second took her and died after leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. 22 And the seven left no offspring. Last of all, even the woman died. 23 In the resurrection, when they might rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”
24 Jesus said to them, “Is it not for this reason you are all deceived, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven. 26 But as for the dead that are raised, have you all not read in the book of Moses about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?dn 27 He is not God of the dead but of the living. You all are very deceived.”
The Great Commandment
28 And one of the scribes, after coming up hearing them disputing with one another and seeing that He answered them well, asked Him, “Which commandment is the most importantdo of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one, 30 and you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your whole soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’dp 31 The second is this: ‘You all will love your neighbor as yourself.’dq No other commandment is greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to Him, “Well done, Teacher. Truly you said that He is one, and there is no other besides Him. 33 And to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And after seeing him, that he answered prudently, Jesus said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one was daring to ask Him anything.
Whose Son Is the Christ?
35 And after answering, Jesus, while teaching in the temple was saying, “How do the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself said in the Holy Spirit,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’dr
37 David himself calls Him Lord, and how is He his son?” And the great crowd was hearing Him gladly.
Beware of the Scribes
38 And in His teaching, He was saying, “Bewareds of the scribes, who are wishing to walk around in long robes, and be greeted in the marketplaces, 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues, and places of honor at feasts, 40 devouring the houses of widows and for a pretensedt, make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
The Widow's Offering
41 And after sitting down opposite the treasury, He was watchingdu how the people put money into the offering box. And many rich people put in much. 42 And after coming, one poor widow put in two small copper coinsdv, which make a pennydw. 43 And after calling to Himself His disciples, He said to them, “Amen I say to you all that this poor widow put in more than all those contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
13 And while coming out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look what manner of stones and what manner of buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left heredx stone upon stone another that will not be thrown downdy.”
Signs of the Close of the Age
3 And while sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were asking Him privately, 4 “Telldz us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be completed?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one deceives you all. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am!’ and they will deceive many. 7 And when you all hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightenedea, it is necessary to be, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are the beginning of the birth pains.
9 “But watcheb yourselves. They will deliver you all over to councilsec, and you all will be beaten in synagogues, and before governors and kings you all will stand for my sake to witness to them. 10 And to all nations first it is necessary for the gospel to be preached. 11 And when they bring you all, delivering you all over, do not be anxioused what you all are should say, but whatever is given to you all in that hour, that you all say, for it is not you all speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and father, child, and children will rise against parents and will kill them. 13 And you all will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he after enduring to the end, this man will be saved.
The Abomination of Desolation
14 “But when you see the abomination of desolationee after having stood where should not be (the one reading, understand), then those in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 And he who is on the housetop do not go down nor enter his house to take anything out, 16 and he in the field do not turn back again to take his cloak. 17 And woe to pregnant womenef and to those nursing infants in those days! 18 But you all pray that it may not happen in winter. 19 For there will be in those days such tribulation as has not been since the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will beeg. 20 And if the Lord did not cut short the days, no flesh would be saved. But because of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. 21 And then if anyone might say to you all, ‘Behold, here is the Christ!’ ‘Behold, there He is!’ do not believeeh. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and give signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But you all see; I have foretold you all things.
The Coming of the Son of Man
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its brilliance, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers which are in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then He will send out the angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
28 “And from the fig tree, you all learn its parable: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you all know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you all see these things taking place, you all know that He is near at the gates. 30 Amen I say to you all that this generation will not pass awayei until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.ej
No One Knows That Day or Hour
32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, only the Father. 33 Watch, keep awake,ek for you all do not know when the time is. 34 It is like a man gone abroad, after leaving his home and giving his servants authority, each with his work, and he commands the doorkeeper that he should stay awake. 35 Therefore, you all stay awake, for you all do not know when the master of the house comes, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crowsel, or in the morning— 36 so after coming suddenly he does not find you all sleeping. 37 And what I say to you all I say to all: Stay awake.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
14 And it was two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how in secretem after arresting Him they might kill Him. 2 For they were saying, “Not during the feast, so there won’t be an uproar from the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3 And while He was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper reclining at table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of
ointment of pure narden, very costly, after breaking the flask, she poured it over His head. 4 But there were some being very displeased to themselves, “Why has there been a waste of the ointment? 5 For this ointment was able to be sold for three hundred denarii and to be given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. 6 But Jesus said, “Forgive her. Why do you all trouble her? She did a beautiful thing to me. 7 For you all always have the poor with you and whenever you all wish you are able to do good for them. But you all will not always have me. 8 She did what she could; she took my body beforehand to anoint for burial. 9 Amen I say to you all, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she did will be told in memory of her.”
Judas to Betray Jesus
10 And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order that he might betray Him to them. 11 But after hearing it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he was seeking how he might opportunely betray Him.
The Passover with the Disciples
12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they were sacrificing the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do you wish after going, we should prepare that you may eat the Passover?” 13 And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city and a man will meet you all carrying a jug of water. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you all a large upper room after having been furnished and ready; and there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples went out and came to the city and found it as He said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
17 And after it was evening, He came with the twelve. 18 And while reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Amen I say to you all, one of you will betray me, he who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to Him one after another, “Not I?” 20 But He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, he who is dipping bread with me into the dish. 21 Since indeed the Son of Man goes as it is written about Him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It is better for him if that man was not born.”
Institution of the Lord's Supper
22 And while eating, after taking bread and blessing it, He broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take, this is my body.” 23 And after taking a cup and giving thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank out of it. 24 And He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, being poured out for many. 25 Amen I say to you all, I will never drinkeo again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
26 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, since it has been written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, I will go before you all into Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to him, “If even they all will fall away, but not I.” 30 And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you all, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, three times you will deny me.” 31 But he was emphatically saying, “If it is necessary I die with you, I will never deny you.” And they all were saying likewise.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be amazed and troubled. 34 And He said to them, “Very sorrowful is my soul, even to death. Remain here and keep awake.” 35 And after going a little farther, He was falling on the earth and praying that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He was saying, “Abbaep, Father, all things are possible for you. Removeeq this cup from me. But not what I will, but what you will.” 37 And He came and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Are you not strong enough to stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray that you may not enterer into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again after going away, He prayed, after saying the same words. 40 And again after coming, He found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what they should answer Him. 41 And He came the third time and said to them, “You all sleep now and rest, it is enough; the hour has come. Behold the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, we should go; behold, my betrayer approaches.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
43 And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him crowds with swords and clubs from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 And the betrayer himself had given a sign to them, saying, “Whoever I kiss is He. Seize Him and lead Him away safelyes.” 45 And after coming and going up to Him immediately, he said, “Rabbi!” And he fervently kissedet Him. 46 And they put hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those after having stood by, drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And after answering, Jesus said to him, “As against a robber you all came out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Daily I was with you all in the temple teaching, and you all did not seize me. But in order that the scripture may be fulfilled.” 50 And after leaving Him, they all fled.
A Young Man Flees
51 And a young man was following Him, after having worn a linen cloth on his naked body. And they seized him, 52 but after leaving the linen cloth, he ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council
53 And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter from a distance, followed Him into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 But the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to kill Him, and they were finding none. 56 For many were bearing false witness against Him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some, after standing up were bearing false witness against Him saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days, I will build another not made with hands.’” 59 And neither about this did their testimony agree. 60 And after standing up in the midst, the high priest asked Jesus, saying, “Do you not answer what these men testify against you?” 61 But He was being silent and did not answer. Again the chief priest asked Him and said to Him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 But Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest after tearing his garments said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You all heard His blasphemy. What do you all think?” And they all condemned Him to be guilty of death. 65 And some began to spit on Him and to covereu His face and to strike Him and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received Him with blows.
Peter Denies Jesus
66 And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and after seeing Peter warming himself, looking at him, she said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you say.” And he went out into the exterior court and the rooster crowed. 69 And the servant girl, after seeing him, began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he was denying it. And after a little while, again the bystanders were saying to Peter, “Truly you are one of them, for you are Galilean.” 71 But he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you all speak.” 72 And immediately a second time, the rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word as Jesus said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, three times you will deny me.” And after reflecting on it, he was weeping.
Jesus Delivered to Pilate
15 And immediately it was morning, the chief priests, after having council with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrin and binding Jesus, led Him away and delivered Him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And after answering, He said to him, “You say.” 3 And the chief priests were accusing Him of many things. 4 But Pilate again was asking Him, saying, “Do you not answer anything? See how much they accuse you.” 5 But Jesus did not answer anything so that Pilate was amazed.
Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
6 And at the feast, he was releasing to them one prisoner whom they were asking for. 7 There was a man called Barabbas with the rebels after having been imprisoned who in the insurrection had committed murder. 8 And after coming up, the crowd began to ask as he was doing for them. 9 But Pilate answered them saying, “Do you all wish I give to you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was perceiving that because of envyev that the chief priests had delivered Him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd in order that he should rather release Barabbas to them. 12 But Pilate again, after answering, was saying to them, “What then do you all wish I should do with the man you all call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out, “Crucify Him.” 14 But Pilate was saying to them, “For what evil did He do?” But they cried out all even more, “Crucify Him.” 15 And Pilate, wishing to make the crowd content, released to them Barabbas, and delivered Jesus after scourgingew, that He should be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
16 And the soldiers led Him away inside the palace (that is, the praetoriumex), and called together the whole battalioney. 17 And they clothed Him in a purple cloak, and put it on Him, after twisting together a crown of thorns. 18 And they began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking His head with a reed and spitting on Him and while kneeling, they were worshipping Him. 20 And when they mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple cloak and gave Him His clothes. And they led Him out in order that they might crucify Him.
The Crucifixion
21 And they compelled someone passing by, Simon of Cyrene, while coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he should carry His cross. 22 And they brought Him to the place called Golgotha (which is remembered Place of the Skull). 23 And they were giving Him wine after being mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. 24 And they crucified Him, and they divided His garments among themselves, casting lots for them, who should take what. 25 And it was the third hourez when they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of His charge was inscribed, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with Him they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left.fa 29 And those, while walking by, were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Hafb! The One destroying the temple and rebuilding it in three days, 30 save yourself after coming down from the cross!” 31 Likewise also, the chief priests while mocking to one another with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others, Himself He is not able to save. 32 The Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross in order that we may see and believe.” Those after having been crucified with Him also were reviling Him.
The Death of Jesus
33 And when the sixth hourfc came, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hourfd. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is being interpreted, “My God, my God, why did you forsake me?”fe 35 And some of the bystanders after hearing were saying, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone after running and filling a sponge with vinegar and putting it on a reed, was giving it to Him to drink, saying, “Wait, we should see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 But Jesus, after crying out a loud cry, breathed out His last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And the centurion, after having stood opposite Him and seeing that this way He breathed out His last, said, “Truly, this man was the Son of God!”
40 And there were also women while looking on from a distance in whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses and Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they were following Him and ministering to Him, and there were many other women after coming up with Him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Is Buried
42 And now it was evening, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 after coming, Joseph of Arimathea, an honorable counselorff, who was also himself waiting for the kingdom of God, after daring, went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate wondered if already He had died. And after summoning the centurion, he asked him if He was dead long ago. 45 And after learning from the centurion, he bestowed the corpse to Joseph. 46 And after bringing a linen shroud, he took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen shroud, and laid Him in a tomb that had was cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, were seeing where He had been lain.
The Resurrection
16 And when the Sabbath passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices in order that after going, they might anoint Him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb after the rising of the sun. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And after looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back— for it was very large. 5 And after entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, after having been dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmedfg. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmedfh. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, after having been crucified. He rose; He is not here. Behold the place they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you all into Galilee. There you all will see Him, as He said to you all.” 8 And after going out, they fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.fi

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
9 [[ And after rising early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 After going, she announced to those who had been with Him while they were mourning and weeping. 11 Likewise, after hearing that He lives and was seen by her, they did not believe.
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples
12 After these things, to two of them as they were walking, He appeared in another form while going into the country. 13 Likewise after going back, they announced it to the rest, but they did not believe them.
The Great Commission
14 And afterward, while reclining at table, He appeared to the eleven themselves, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because those, after seeing Him after having risen, did not believe. 15 And He said to them, “After going into allfk the world, preach the gospel to the whole creationfl. 16 The one after believing and after being baptized will be saved, but the one not believing will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those after believing: in my name, they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues; 18 and in their hands, they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurtfm them; on the sick, they will lay their hands, and they will recover.”
19 Then indeed the Lord Jesus after speakingfn to them was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And after going out, they preached everywhere while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.]]
