According to Lukea

Dedication to Theophilus

1 Since indeed many have undertook to arrange a declaration of the things after having been fully accomplished among us, 2 as delivered to us from the beginning after being eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3 it seemed good to me also, after having followed all things exactly from the beginning, to write an orderly account to you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 in order that you may knowb the certainty of the things you were instructed.

Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And his wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. 7 And they had no child because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.

8 And it came to pass, he executed the priest’s office while his division was arranged before God, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to burn incense after entering into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord after having stood on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled after seeing, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not fearc, Zechariah, because your prayer was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John. 14 And he will be a joy to you and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great before the Lord. And wine or strong drink he should not drinkd, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from the womb of his mother. 16 And many of the childrene of Israel he will turn to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdomf of the righteous, and to make ready to the Lord a people after having been prepared.”

18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in her days.” 19 And after answering, the angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. The one after having stood in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to preach this good news to you. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these take place because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their time.” 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 And after coming out, he was unableg to speak to them, and they knew that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them and was remaining mute. 23 And it came to pass when his days of service ended, he went to his house.

24 And after these days, his wife Elizabeth conceived and was hiding herself for five months saying, 25 “This the Lord has done to me in the days when He looked upon to take away my disgrace among men.”

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to the city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin after having been betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David. And the name of the virgin was Mary. 28 And after coming to her, he said, “Greetings, O graced oneh, the Lord is with you!”i 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying and was deliberating what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not fearj, Mary, for you found grace with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and you will bear a son, and you will call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David, 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I do not know a man?”k

35 And after answering, the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the holy child being born will be called Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also herself conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her being called barren. 37 Because nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 But Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 And after rising in those days, Mary went into the hill country with haste into a city of Judah, 40 and she entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it came to pass when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby lept in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, as it came to pass, the sound of your greeting came to my ear, the baby in my womb lept for exceeding joy. 45 And blessed is she after believing that there would be a fulfillmentl to what was spokenm to her from the Lord.”

Mary's Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,

47 and my spirit greatly rejoiced in God my Savior,

48 for He looked on the humiliation of His servant.

For behold from now on, all generations will call me blessed;

49 for the Mighty One did great things to me,

and holy is His name.

50 And His mercy to generation and generation

to those fearing Him.

51 He made strength in His arm;

He scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

52 He took down the mighty from their thrones

and exalted the lowly;

53 He filled the hungry with good things,

and those being rich, He sent away empty.

54 He has helped His servant Israel,

to remember His mercy,

55 as He spoke to our fathers,

to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 And the time was fulfilled for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown His great mercy with her, and they were rejoicing with her. 59 And it came to pass, on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they were calling him by the name of his father, Zechariah. 60 And after answering, his mother said, “No, but he will be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “No one is of your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 But they were making signs to his father what he wished him to be called. 63 And after asking for a writing tablet, he wrote, saying, “John is his name.” And they all wondered. 64 And his mouth opened immediately, and his tongue, and he was speaking, blessing God. 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And in the whole hill country of Judea, all these things were being talked about, 66 and all those after hearing, laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zechariah's Prophecy

67 And Zechariah, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

68 “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel,

because He visited and redeemed His people

69 and raised up a horn of salvation for us

in the house of David, His servant,

70 as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets from old,

71 salvation from our enemies,

and from the hand of all those hating us;

72 to show the mercy with our fathers

and to remember His holy covenant,

73 the oath that He swore to Abraham our father, to grant to us

74 after being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

to serve Him without fear,

75 in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

76 And also you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,

for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways,

77 to give knowledge of salvation to His people

in forgiveness of their sins,

78 because of the tender mercy of our God,

in that the sunrise will visit us from on high

79 to give light to those sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 And the child was growing and strengthening in spirit, and was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

2 And it came to pass in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus to registern all the world. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 And all were going to be registered, each to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, after having been betrothed to him, being pregnant. 6 And it came to pass, while they were there, the time was fulfilled for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in swaddling clotheso and laid Him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

8 And shepherds were in the same region out in the field, keeping a night watch of their flock. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they feared with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Do not fearp, for behold, I bring you good news to you all of great joy which will be to all the people 11 since a Savior was born to you all today who is Christ the Lord in the city of David. 12 And this is the sign to you all, you all will find a baby after having been wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hostq, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth, peace among men with whom He is well pleased!”

15 And it came to pass as the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds were saying to one another, “We should then go through to Bethlehem and see this thing after having happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went speedily and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And after seeing, they made known about the saying after being said to them concerning this child. 18 And all, who after hearing, wondered about what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary was preserving up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and saw as it was told to them.

21 And when eight days were fulfilled for His circumcision, His name was called Jesus, after being called by the angel before His conception in the womb.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

22 And when the days were fulfilled for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present to the Lordr 23 (as it is had been written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male opening the womb will be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is saids in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”t 25 And behold, a man was in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it was revealedu to him by the Holy Spirit not to see death before he might see the Christ of the Lord. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do themselves according to the custom of the law for Him, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

29 “Now you depart your servant, Lord, according to your word in peace;

30 because my eyes saw your salvation

31 that you prepared before the face of all peoples,

32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and glory of your people Israel.”

33 And His father and his mother were marveling at the saying about Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign being spoken against 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. This one, after being advanced many days and living with her husband seven years from her virginity, 37 was a widow until eighty-four, who was not departing from the temple, serving with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And that very hour, after coming up, she was giving thanks to God and speaking of Him to all those waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

The Return to Nazareth

39 And as they completed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee to their town of Nazareth. 40 And the child was growing and strengthening, being filled with wisdom. And the grace of God was upon Him.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41 And His parents were going to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they were going up according to the custom of the feast. 43 And after the feast was completed, during their return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, and His parents did not know. 44 But after supposing Him to be in the group, they went a day's journey, and they were carefully searching for Him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and after not finding Him, they returned to Jerusalem, carefully searching for Him. 46 And it came to pass, after three days, they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all those hearing Him were amazed at His understandingv and answers. 48 And after seeing Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him, “Son, why did you do this to us? Behold, your father and I, while grieving, were searching for you.” 49 And He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Have you not known that in the house of my Father it is necessary for me to be?” 50 And they did not understand the saying that He spoke to them. 51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And His mother was keeping all these things in her heart.

52 And Jesus was progressing in wisdom and in age and in grace with God and men.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it has been written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

Prepare the way of the Lord,

make His paths straight.

5 Every valley will be filled,

and every mountain and hill will be made low,

and the crooked will be straight,

and the rough places will be level ways,

6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’”w

7 He was speaking, therefore, to the coming crowds to be baptized by him, “Generation of vipers! Who warned you all to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Bear fruit, therefore, worthy of repentance. And do not beginx to say in yourselves, ‘As a father we have Abraham.’ For I tell you all, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree not bearing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds were asking him saying, “What then shall we do?” 11 And after answering, He said to them, “The one having two tunicsy givez to the one not having, and the one having food, do likewise.” 12 But the tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than what has been appointed to you all.” 14 And the soldiers were also asking him saying, “And us, what should we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort or falsely accuseaa, and be content with your wages.”

15 As the people were anticipating and debating in all their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all, saying, “I indeed baptize you all in water, but coming is He who is mightier than I, whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandals. He will baptize you all in the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 Whose winnowing forkab is in His hand, to cleanse perfectly His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn, but the chaff He will burn completely with unquenchable fire.”

18 And therefore, with many other exhortations he was preaching good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, while being rebuked by him for Herodias, the wife of his brother, and for all the evil things that Herod did, 20 added this also to them all: he locked up John in prison.

21 And it came to pass in the baptism of all the people, after Jesus was baptized and while praying, the heavens opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove on Him, and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.”ac

The Temptation of Jesus

4And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was being led in the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, while being testedad by the devil. And He did not eat anything in those days. And after they were completed, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, say to this stone that it might become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It has been written, ‘Not by bread only will man live.’”ae 5 And after leading Him up, he showed to Him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant of time, 6 and the devil said to Him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, because it has been delivered to me, and whomever I wish I give it. 7 You therefore, if you worship before me, it will all be yours.”af 8 And after answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been written,

“‘The Lord your God you all will worship,

and to Him only you all will serve.’”ag

9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it has been written,

“‘He will command His angels concerning you,

to carefully guard you,’

11 and

“‘On their hands they will lift you up,

so that you won’t strike your foot against a stone.’”ah

12 And after answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been said, ‘You all will not test the Lord your God.’”ai 13 And after completing every test, the devil departed from Him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report went out through all the surrounding country about Him. 15 And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 And He came into Nazareth, where He was been brought up. And He went, as was His custom, on the day of the Sabbath into the synagogue and stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and after unrolling the scroll, He found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because He anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

and recovering of sight to the blind,

to set at liberty those after having been oppressed,

19 to preach the year of the Lord's favor.”aj

20 And after rolling up and giving the scroll back to the attendant, He sat down, and all the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all were testifying of Him and were marveling at the gracious words coming out of His mouth. And they were saying, “Is this not the son of Joseph?” 23 And He said to them, “Surely you all will say to me this parable, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we heard you did at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.” 24 And He said, “Amen I say to you all that no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I say to you all, there were many widows in the days of Elijah in Israel when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the earth, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them except Zarephath of Sidon to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them were cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” 28 And everyone in the synagogue was filled with wrath while hearing these things. 29 And after rising up, they threw Him out of the town and brought Him to the edge of the mountain on which their town was built so that they could throw Him down the cliff. 30 But after going through their midst, He was going away.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

31 And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And He was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at His teaching because His words were in authority. 33 And in the synagogue, there was a man having the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha!ak What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent and come out from him!” And after throwing him down into their midst, the demon came out from him after not hurting him. 36 And they all were amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? That in authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And echoes about Him were going out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

38 And after rising from the synagogue, He entered into the house of Simon. And Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to Him on her behalf. 39 And after standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her and immediately after rising, she was serving them.

40 And while the sun was setting, all those having any who were sick with various diseases, brought them to Him, and on every one of them, while laying His hands, He was healing them. 41 And demons also were coming out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” And while rebuking them, He was not permitting them to speak because they knew Him to be the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

42 And after it was day, He departed and went into a desolate place. And the crowds were seeking Him and came to Him and were holding Him firmlyal not to leave from them. 43 But He said to them, “Also, to the other towns it is necessary for me to preach the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this I was sent.” 44 And He was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

5 And it came to pass, the crowd pressed in on Him to hear the word of God while He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and He saw two boats after having stood by the lake, but the fishermen after going away from them were washing their nets. 3 And after embarking into one of the boats, which was Simon's, He asked him to put outam a little from the land. And after sitting down, He was teaching the people from the boat. 4 And when He finished speaking, He said to Simon, Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And after answering, Simon said, “Masteran, after laboring through the whole night we took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And after doing this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and they were breaking their nets. 7 And they signaled to their partners in the other boat after coming to help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But after seeing, Simon Peter fell down at the knees of Jesus saying, “Departao from me because I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were completely astonishedap at the catch of fish that they took, 10 and likewise also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fearaq; from now on you all will be catching men.” 11 And after bringing their boats to land and leaving everything, they followed Him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

12 And it came to pass while He was in one of the cities and behold, a man full of leprosy, and after seeing Jesus and falling on his face, he begged Him saying, “Lord, if you wish, you are able to cleanse me.” 13 And after stretching out His hand, He touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He commanded him to tell no one, but “after going, show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing as Moses commanded for a witness to them.” 15 But much more the report about Him was going abroad, and great crowds were gathering to hear and to be healed from their infirmities. 16 But He was withdrawing into desolate places and praying.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

17 And it came to pass in one of those days as He was teaching, the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting, those who were coming from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him and lay him before Him, 19 and after not finding a way, they might bring him through the crowd, after going up on the roof, they let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And after seeing their faith, He said, “Man, your sins have been forgiven to you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to deliberate, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?” 22 But after knowing their thoughts, Jesus answered and said to them, “Why do you deliberate in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven to you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But in order that you all may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” —He said to the paralyzed man— “I say to you, rise, and after picking up your bed, go to your house.” 25 And immediately after rising up before them and picking up what he had been lying on, he went to his house glorifying God. 26 And amazement took them all, and they were glorifying God and were filled with fear, saying, “We saw extraordinary things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi

27 And after this, He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. And He said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And after abandoning everything and rising, he was following Him.

29 And Levi made Him a great feast in his home, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes were grumbling to His disciples, saying, “Why with the tax collectors and sinners do you all eat and drink?” 31 And after answering, Jesus said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those having sickness. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but the sinners to repentance.”

A Question About Fasting

33 And they said to Him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers for themselves and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 But Jesus said to them, “Are you all able to make wedding guestsar fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And He was also telling a parable to them: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will also tear the new and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins, will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

6 And it came to pass on the Sabbath, while He was going through grainfields, His disciples were plucking and eating the heads of grain while rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you all doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 3 And after answering them, Jesus said, “Have you all not read what David did when he was hungry and those being with him, 4 how he came into the house of God, and after taking the bread of the Presence, he ate and gave it to those with him which is not lawful to eat except only by the priests?” 5 And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

6 And it came to pass on another Sabbath He entered into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees were watchingas Him if He heals on the Sabbath in order that they might find a reason to charge Him. 8 But He had known their reasoning, and He said to the man having the withered hand, “Come and stand in the midst.” And after rising, he stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you all if is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save or to destroy a lifeat?” 10 And after looking around at them all, He said to him, Stretch out your hand.” And he did it, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and were discussing with one another what they wished to do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles

12 And it came to pass in these days, He went out to the mountain to pray, and all night He was in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples, and after choosing from them twelve, whom He named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And after coming down with them, He stood on a level place, and a great crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 came to hear Him and to be healed from their diseases. And those being troubled with unclean spirits were being cured. 19 And all the crowd was seeking to touch Him because power was coming out from Him, and He was healing them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And after lifting up His eyes on His disciples, He was saying:

“Blessed are the poorau, for yours is the kingdom of God.

21 “Blessed are those hungering now, for you all will be filled.

“Blessed are those crying now, for you all will laugh.

22 Blessed are you all when men might hate you all and when they might exclude you all and revile and cast out your name as evil on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for so their fathers were doing to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 “Nevertheless, woeav to you all who are rich, for you have your consolation.

25 “Woe to you all who are full now, for you all will be hungry.

“Woe to you all who laugh now, for you all will mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you all when all people may speak well of you all, for so their fathers were doing to the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to all those hearing, Love youraw enemies, do good to those hating you, 28 bless those cursing you all, pray for those abusing you all. 29 To one who striking you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one taking away your cloakax, do not withhold your tunicay either. 30 Give to everyone begging from you and from one taking away your things, do not demandaz them back. 31 And as you wish that men might do to you all, do likewise to them.

32 “And if you all love those loving you all, what grace to you all is that? For also the sinners love those loving them. 33 For also if you all do good to those doing good to you all, what grace to you all is that? Sinners also do the same. 34 And if you all might lend to whom you hope to receive, what grace to you all is that? Sinners also lend to sinners in order to get back the same amount. 35 Nevertheless, love your enemies and do good and lend hoping for nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you all will be sons of the Most High, for He is kindba to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be compassionate even as your Father is compassionate.

Judging Others

37 “And do not judgebb, and you all will not be judgedbc; and do not condemnbd, and you all will not be condemnedbe; forgivebf and you all will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you all. Good measure, after having been pressed down and shaken together, overflowing, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you measured with, it will be measured to you all.”

39 And He also told a parable to them: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone after having been fully trainedbg, will be like his teacher. 41 But why do you see the twigbh that is in your brother's eye, but the beambi in your own eye you do not carefully consider? 42 How are you able to say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the twig in your eye,’ when you yourself are not seeing the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite, first remove the beam out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the twig in your brother's eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit

43 “For no good tree is bearing rotten fruit, nor again is a rotten tree bearing good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For not from thorn bushes are figs gathered, nor from a bramble bush are grapes picked. 45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

Build Your House on the Rock

46 “And why do you all call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say? 47 All those coming to me and hearing my words and doing them, I will show to you all what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house who dug and went deep and laid the foundation on a rock. And when a flood came, the stream broke against that house and was not strong enough to shake it because it was well built.bj 49 But the one, who after hearing and not doing, is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

7 After He finished all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. 2 And a centurionbk had a servant having sickness, about to die, who was precious to him. 3 And after hearing about Jesus, he sent to Him elders of the Jews asking Him that after coming, He might save his servant. 4 And after coming to Jesus, they were pleading with Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for you to offerbl this for him, 5 for he loves our nation, and he built the synagogue for us.” 6 And Jesus went with them. But now He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not troublebm yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. 7 Therefore, I myself did not presume to come to you, but say the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I also am a man being set under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 And after hearing this, Jesus marveled at him, and after turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I say to you all, not even in Israel I found such faith.” 10 And after returning to the house, those after being sent found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

11 And it came to pass on the next day, He went to a city called Nain, and His disciples and a great crowd went with Him. 12 And as He approached to the gate of the city, behold, a man after having died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the city was with her. 13 And after seeing her, the Lord had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weepbn.” 14 And after coming up, He touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and He gave him to his mother. 16 And fear took them all and they were glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet arose among us!” and “God has visited His people!” 17 And this report went out through the whole of Judea about Him and all the surrounding country.

Messengers from John the Baptist

18 The disciples of John announced to him about these things. And after calling two of His disciples, John 19 sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one coming, or do we look for another?” 20 And after coming to Him, the men said, “John the Baptist sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one coming, or shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour He healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind, He bestowed sight. 22 And after answering, He said to them, “After going, announce to John what you saw and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is whoever who is not offendedbo by me.”

24 And after the messengers of John's left, He began to tell the crowds concerning John: “What did you all go out into the wilderness to seebp? A reed being shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you all go out to see? A man after having been dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in glorious clothing and luxury are living in kings' courts. 26 But what then did you all come out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you all, and much morebq than a prophet. 27 This is he about whom it has been written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

who will prepare your way before you.’br

28 I say to you all, among those born of women, none is greater than John. But the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 (And all the people and the tax collectors after hearing, justified God after being baptized with the baptism of John, 30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purposebs of God for themselves, after not having been baptized by him.)

31 “To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and to what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;

we lamentedbt, and you did not mourn.’

33 For John the Baptist has come, not eating bread nor drinking no wine, and you all say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you all say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 And wisdom was justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 And one of the Pharisees was asking Him that he might eat with Him, and He came to the house of the Pharisee and took His place at the table. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, and after learning that He is reclining at the table in the house of the Pharisee and bringing an alabaster flask of ointment 38 and standing behind at His feet weeping, with her tears began to wet His feet and with the hair of her head was wiping them and was fervently kissing His feet and was anointing them with the ointment. 39 And after seeing, the Pharisee who invited Him, said in himself, “This man, if He was a prophet, would knowbu who and what sort of woman is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And after answering, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say itbv.”

41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One was owing five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Not having anything to pay, he forgave both. Therefore, which of them will love him more?” 43 After answering, Simon said, “I suppose the one who he forgave the greater debt.” And He said to him, “You judged rightly.” 44 And after turning to the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but with her tears she washed my feet, and with her hair, she wiped them. 45 You gave me no kiss, but she from the time I came in, has not ceased kissing my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven because she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And he said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 And those who were at table with Him began to say in themselves, “Who is this who also forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Women Accompanying Jesus

8 And it came to pass soon afterward, He was going on through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, 2 and some women who were healed from evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, being called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who served them out of their means.

The Parable of the Sower

4 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from every city were coming to Him, He said through a parable: 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock, and after growing up, it withered away because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell in the midst of the thorns, and the thorns, after growing up with it, choked it. 8 And some fell into good earth, and after growing, bore fruit one hundredfold.” After saying these things, He was calling out, “The one having ears to hear, hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

9 And His disciples were asking Him what this parable means, 10 and He said, “To you all it has been given to know the mysteriesbw of the kingdom of God, but to others in parables, in order that they ‘seeing they may not seebx, and hearing they may not understandby.’bz 11 And this is the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 And the ones along the path are those hearing; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts in order that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those when they might hear the word with joy, receive the word. But these have no root, they believe for a time, and in time of testing, fall away. 14 And what was fallingca among the thorns, they are those hearing, and while going, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasurescb of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 As what is in the good earth, they are those who, in an honest and good heartcc after hearing the word, firmly hold it and bear fruit in patience.

A Lamp Under a Jar

16 “And no one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed but puts it on a stand in order that those entering may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made visible nor kept secret that will not be knowncd and come to light. 18 Take care then how you all hear, for to whoever has, more will be given to him, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks to have will be taken away from him.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

19 And His mother and His brothers came to Him, and they were not able to reach Him because of the crowd. 20 And He was told, “Your mother and your brothers have stood outside desiring to see you.” 21 But after answering, He said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those hearing and doing the word of God.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

22 And it came to pass one day, He embarked into a boat with His disciples, and he said to them, “We should go across to the other side of the lake.” And they set out, 23 and while sailing, He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And after coming, they woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And after waking, He rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and there was a calm. 25 And He said to them, “Where is yource faith?” And after fearing, they marveled saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even winds and water, and they obey Him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

26 And they sailed to the country of the Gerasenescf, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And after coming out on land, there met Him a man from the city having demons. And a long time he had worn no clothes and was not living in a house but among the tombs. 28 And after seeing Jesus and crying out, he fell down before Him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not tormentcg me.” 29 For He commanded the unclean spirit to come out from the man. (For many a time it had seized him. And while being guarded, he was bound with chains and shackles and breaking the bonds, he was being driven by the demon into the desert.) 30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons entered into him. 31 And they were begging Him that he not commandch them to depart into the abyss. 32 And there was there a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside, and they begged Him that He might permit them to enter into these. And He permitted them. 33 And after coming out from the man, the demons entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

34 And after seeing what had happened, the herdsmen fled and announced it in the city and in the country. 35 And they went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons came out of, sitting, after having been clothed and being in his right mindci, at the feet of Jesus, and they feared. 36 And those seeing it announced to them how the demon-possessedcj man was saved. 37 And all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Him to leave from them because they being held with great fear. And after embarking into the boat, He returned. 38 And the man from whom the demons had gone out of was begging Him to be with him, but He sent him away, saying, 39 Return to your house and recount how much God did for you.” And he went away, preaching throughout the whole city how much Jesus did for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

40 And when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. 41 And behold a man came named Jairus, and this man was a ruler of the synagogue. And after falling at the feet of Jesus, he was imploring Him to come into his house 42 because his only daughter was with him, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

And as Jesus went, the people were pressing around Him. 43 And a woman being in a flowing of blood for twelve years, which after spending all her living on physicians, was not strong enough to be healed by anyone. 44 After coming up from behind, she touched the fringe of His garment and instantly her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched me?” And while everyone was denying it, Peterck said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press incl!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I know power has gone outcm from me.” 47 And after seeing that she was not hidden, the woman came trembling and after falling down before Him, announced before all the people for what cause she touched Him and how instantly she was healed. 48 But He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

49 While He was still speaking, someone from the ruler of the synagogue’s house came saying, “Your daughter has died; no longer troublecn the teacher.” 50 But after hearing, Jesus answered him, “Do not fearco; only believe, and she will be saved.” 51 And after coming into the house, He allowed no one to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and the mother. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but He said, “Do not weepcp, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they were laughing at Him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But after taking her by the hand, He called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned and she got up instantly. And He commanded something be given to her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but He commanded them to tell no one what had happened.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

9 And after calling together the twelve, He gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 And He said to them, Take nothing for the way, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money nor have two tunics apiece. 4 And anyone’s house you all might enter into, remain there, and from there depart. 5 And wherever they do not receive you all, while leaving from that city, shake off the dust from your feet as a witness against them.” 6 And while departing, they were going through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

7 And Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed because it was said by some that John was raised from the dead, 8 but by some that Elijah had appeared and by some that one of the prophets of old rose up. 9 And Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he was seeking to see Him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 And after returning, the apostles recounted to Him all that they did. And after taking them, He withdrew privately to a city being called Bethsaida. 11 But after learning it, the crowds followed Him, and after welcoming them, He was speaking to them of the kingdom of God and those having need of healing, He was curing. 12 And the day began to wear away, and the twelve after coming, said to Him, “Dismisscq the crowd in order that after going into the surrounding villages and countryside they might lodge and find provisions because we are here in a desolate place.” 13 And He said to them, You all give them something to eat.” But they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless after going we might buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples, “You all sit them down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and they all sat down. 16 And after taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. And He broke the loaves and was giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were filled. And the excess was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 And it happened while He was praying alone, His disciples were with Him and He asked them, “Who do the crowds say me to be?” 19 And after answering, they said, “John the Baptist. But others, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old rose up.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you all say me to be?” And after answering, Peter said, “The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 And after forbidding, He commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 after saying, “It is necessary the Son of Man suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be killed and on the third day to be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And He was saying to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wishes to save his lifecr will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake, this man will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man, gaining the whole world after losing or forfeitingcs himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, this man the Son of Man will be ashamed of when He comes in His glory and the glory of His Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you all truly, there are some after having stood here who will not tastect death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, after taking with Him Peter and John and James, He went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And it came to pass as he prayed, the appearancecu of His face was as anothercv, and His clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who after appearing in glory were speaking of His exoduscw which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. 32 And Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but after becoming fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standingcx with him. 33 And it came to pass as they were departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good we are here. And we should make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah” —not knowing what he said. 34 As while saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, the Chosen Onecy; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice passed, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

37 And it came to pass on the next day, after coming down from the mountain, a great crowd met Him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son because he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out. And it convulses him so that he foams at the mouthcz and shattersda him. 40 And I begged your disciples in order that they might cast it out, and they were not able.” 41 And after answering, Jesus said, “O faithless and corruptdb generation, how long will I be with you all and put up with you all? Bring your son here.” 42 And while yet coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

But while they were all marveling at everything that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 “You all put these words into your ears: For the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they were not understanding this saying, and it was concealed from them in order that they might not perceivedc it. And they were fearing to ask Him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument arose among them which of them was the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, after taking a child, stood him by His side 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives Him sending me. For the one being least among you all, this one is great.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

49 And after answering John said, “Master, we saw someone in your name casting out demons, and we were stopping him because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stopdd him, for the one who is not against you all is for you all.”

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus

51 And it came to pass when the days fully came of His ascension, He set His face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And He sent messengers before His face, and after going, they entered a village of the Samaritans to prepare for Him. 53 And they did not receive Him because His face was set towards Jerusalem. 54 And after seeing it, the disciples James and John said, “Lord, do you wish that we might tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” de 55 But after turning, He reprimanded them.df 56 And they went into another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 And while they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow you wherever you may go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man does not have anywhere He may lay His head.” 59 To another He said, Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, allow medg after going first to bury my father.” 60 And He said to him, Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But you after going, proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but allow medh first to say goodbye to those at my home.” 62 And Jesus said to him, “No one after putting his hand on the plow and looking back is fitdi for the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

10 And after this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and He sent them two by two before His face into every city and town where He Himself was about to go. 2 And He was saying to them, “Indeed, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest that He might send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go; behold, I am sending you all out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Do not carrydj a moneybag, no packdk, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you all may enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace may be there, the peace of you all will rest upon him.dl But if not, it will return to you all. 7 And remain in the same house eating and drinking the things given to you all, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not departdm from house to house. 8 And into whatever city you all may enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you all. 9 And heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you all.’ 10 But whatever city you all may enter into and they do not receive you all, after going out into its streets, say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town clinging to our feet we wipe off against you all. Nevertheless, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I say to you all that it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

13 “Woedn to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because if in Tyre and Sidon the mighty works were done after being done in you all, long ago sitting in sackcloth and ashes they would have repented. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you all. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you lifted up to heaven?do You will be brought down to Hadesdp.

16 The one hearing you all hears me, and the one rejecting you all rejects me, and the one rejecting me rejects Him sending me.”

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And He said to them, “I was seeing Satan after falling like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given to you all authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and on all the power of the enemy, and nothing will hurtdq you all. 20 But in this do not rejoicedr because the spirits are subject to you all, but rejoice because your names have been written in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices in the Father's Will

21 In that same hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I gladly acknowledge you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you hid these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, because this was graciousds in your sight. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father and who the Father is except the Son and whomever the Son wills to reveal Him to.”

23 And after turning to His disciples privately, He said, “Blessed are the eyes seeing what you all see! 24 For I say you all that many prophets and kings wished to see what you all see and did not see it and to hear what you all hear and did not hear it.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 And behold, a lawyer stood up, thoroughly testing Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inheritdt eternal life?du26 And He said to him, “What has been written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And after answering, he said, “You all will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your minddv and your neighbordw as yourself.”dx 28 And He said to him, “You answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 And after answeringdy, Jesus said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who also after stripping him and beating him and departed, after leaving him half dead. 31 But by chancedz, a priest was going down on that road and after seeing him, passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise, a Levite, after coming to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while journeying came to him and after seeing him, had compassion. 34 And after coming to him, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And after setting him on his own animal, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day, after taking out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I, when I come back will repay you.’ 36 Which of these three do you think has been a neighbor to the man after falling among the robbers?” 37 And he said, “The one after doing mercy to him.” And Jesus said to him, Go, and you do likewise.”

Martha and Mary

38 And as they went, He entered into a village. And a woman named Martha received Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister being called Mary, who after sitting at the feet of the Lord, was listening to His teaching. 40 But Martha was being distracted with much serving. And after going up to Him, she said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me alone to serve?ea Therefore, telleb her then to help me.” 41 And after answering the Lord said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. For Mary chose the good portion which will not be taken away from her.”

The Lord's Prayer

11 And it came to pass in a certain place, while He was praying, as He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teachec us to pray, even as John taught his disciples.” 2 And He said to them, “When you all pray, say:

“Father, let your nameed be holy.

Let your kingdom come.

3 May you give to us our daily bread each day,

4 and may you forgive to us our sins,

for we also forgive everyone indebtedee to us.

And do not leadef us not into trials.”

5 And He said to them, “Which of you all will have a friend and will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 since now my friend arrived on a journey to me, and I have nothing I will set before him’; 7 and likewise from within, after answering, he may say, ‘Do not bothereg me; now, the door has been shut, and my children are with me in bed. I am not able after getting up to give you anything’? 8 I say to you all though he will not get up and give him anything after getting up because he is his friend, yet because of his shameless persistence, after rising, he will give to him whatever he needs. 9 And to you all I say, ask, and it will be given to you all; seek and you all will find; knock and it will be opened to you all. 10 For everyone asking receives, and the one seeking finds, and to the one knocking, it will be opened. 11 And whose son out of you all will ask his father for a fish and instead of a fish give to him a serpent? 12 Or even if he asks for an egg, will give to him a scorpion? 13 If therefore you all, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those asking Him!”

Jesus and Beelzebul

14 And He was casting out a demon that was mute. And it came to pass, after the demon came out, the mute man spoke, and the crowds marveled. 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons He casts out demons,” 16 and others, testing Him, were seeking a sign from heaven from Him. 17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom after being divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household fallseh. 18 And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Since you all say by Beelzebul I cast out demons. 19 And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. 20 But if by the finger of God I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God came upon you all. 21 When a strong man, after being fully armed, guards his own palace, in peace are his goods, 22 but when one stronger than he, after attacking him, may overcome him, he takes away his armor on which he trusted and divides his spoil. 23 The one not being with me is against me, and the one not gathering with me scatters.

Return of an Unclean Spirit

24 “When the unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest and not finding it, then it says, ‘I will return to my house from where I came.’ 25 And after coming, it finds the house after having been swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and after entering, they dwell there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

True Blessedness

27 And it came to pass while He was saying these things, after raising her voice, a woman out of the crowd said to Him, “Blessed is the womb after bearing you and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 And He said, “Rather, blessed are those hearing the word of God and are keepingei it!”

The Sign of Jonah

29 And while the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will be the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

The Light in You

33 “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but in a lampstand in order that those entering may see the light. 34 The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is clearej, your whole body is full of light, but when it is evil, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore, take heed the light in you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, not having any part dark, it will be wholly bright as when a lamp with its rays illuminates you.”

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 While He was speaking, a Pharisee asked Him that He might dine with him, and after going in, He reclined at table. 38 But the Pharisee was astonished after seeing that He did not first wash before dinner. 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside of you all is full of extortion and wickednessek. 40 Foolsel! Did not the one after making the outside also make the inside? 41 But the things being within, give as alms, and behold everything is clean for you all.

42 “But woe to you all, Pharisees! Because you all tithe mint and rueem and every herb, and you all disregard judgment and the love of God. But these things it was necessary to do, without disregarding the others. 43 Woe to you all, Pharisees! Because you all love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you all! Because you all are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45 And after answering, one of the lawyers said to Him, “Teacher, saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And He said, “Woe to you all, lawyers also! Because you all load people with oppressive burdens and you yourselves with one of your fingers do not touch the burdens. 47 Woe to you all! Because you all build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 So you all are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers that they indeed killed them, and you all build their tombs. 49 For this reason the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 in order that the blood of all the prophets, after having been shed from the foundation of the world may be required from this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perisheden between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I say to you all, it will be required from this generation. 52 Woe to you all lawyers! Because you all took away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and those entering you all hindered.”

53 After going away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to excessively press Him and provoke Him to speak about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him to catch him in something He might sayeo.

Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

12 In the meantime, after thousands of the people were gathered together so that they were trampling one another, He began to say to His disciples first, “Beware of the leavenep of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed and hidden that will not be known. 3 Therefore, whatever you all said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you all whisperedeq in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

Have No Fear

4And I say you all, my friends, do not fearer those killing the body and after that, have nothing more to do. 5 But I will warn you all whom you all should fear: fear him who after killing has authority to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I say to you all, fear this one! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennieses? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 But even the hairs of your head have all been numbered. Do not fearet; you all are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

8 “And I say to you all, whomever confesses in me before men, the Son of Man also will confess in him before the angels of God. 9 But he, after denying me before men, will be completely deniedeu before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who will speak a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven to him, but the one after blaspheming the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 But when they bring you all before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxiousev about how or what you all should answer or what you all should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you all in that very hour what is necessary to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 And someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But He said to him, “Man, who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And He said to them, Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he was thinking to himself, ‘What should I do because I have nowhere I will store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; rest, eat, drink, rejoice.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required from you, and the things you prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 This is he who treasures up for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Be Anxious

22 And He said to His disciples, “For this reason, I say to you all, do not be anxiousew about your lifeex, what you all may eat, nor about your body, what you all may put on. 23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. 24 Fully observe the ravens: they neither sow nor reap. They have neither storehouse nor barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you all than the birds! 25 And who out of you by being anxious is able add a single cubit to his stature? 26 If then you all are not able to do a small a thing, why are you all anxious about the rest? 27 Fully observe the lilies, how they grow: neither toiling nor spinning, but I say to you all, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, being in the field today and tomorrow being thrown into the oven God so clothes, how much more you all, O you of little faithey! 29 And you all do not seekez what you all may eat and what you all may drink, and do not be worriedfafb. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, but your Father knows that you all need them. 31 Nevertheless, you all seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you all.

32 “Do not fearfc, little flock, because it pleasesfd yourfe Father to give you all the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give alms. Provide yourselves moneybags that do not wear outff, treasure that does not fail in the heavens where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there also your heart will be.

You Must Be Ready

35 Let your loinsfg be fastenedfh and lamps burning, 36 and you all be like men waiting for their master who at any time may return from the wedding feast in order that after coming and knocking, immediately, they might open the door to him. 37 Blessed are those servants, who after coming, the master will find watching. Amen, I say to you all, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and after coming, he will serve them. 38 And if in the second watch or in the third, he comes and finds them this way, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief comes, he would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 And you all be ready because in an hour you all do not think, the Son of Man comes.”

41 But Peter said, “Lord, do you say this parable to us or also to everyone?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master will set over his household to give, in the proper time, their portion of food? 43 Blessed is that servant whom after coming, his master will find doing this. 44 Truly, I say to you all that over all his possessions he will appoint him. 45 But if that servant might say in his heart, ‘My master is delayed to come,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, both to eat and drink and to be drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on that day when he does not anticipate and in that hour he does not know and will cut him in pieces and put his portion with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant, after knowing the will of his master and not preparing or acting according to his will, will be severely beaten. 48 But he, after not knowing and doing what deserved a beating, will be lightly beaten. And everyone to whom much was given, much will be required from him, and to whom they entrusted much, they will demand more.

Not Peace, but Division

49 “I came to cast fire on the earth, and I what I wish that it were already kindled! 50 But the baptism I have to be baptized with, how great is my distress until it is completed! 51 Do you all think that I came to give peace on the earth? No, I say to you all, but rather division. 52 For there will be from now five in one house after having been divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Interpreting the Time

54 And He also said to the crowds, “When you all see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you all say, ‘A shower is coming.’ And it is so. 55 And when you all see the south wind blowing, you all say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! The appearance of earth and sky you all know how to discern, but this timefi how do you all not know to discern?

Settle with Your Accuser

57 “And why for yourselves do you all not judge what is right? 58 For as you go with your accuser before the magistrate, on the way, give diligence to settle with him so he won’t drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. 59 I say to you all, you will never come outfj from there until you give back the last pennyfk.”

Repent or Perish

13 And some were present at that very time, announcing to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And after answering, He said to them, “Do you all think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 No, I say to you all; but if you all do not repent, you all will likewise perish.fl 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you all think that they were worse offenders than all the men living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I say to you all, but if you all do not repent, you all will likewise perish.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

6 And He told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this tree, and I find none. Therefore, cut it down. Why does it use up the ground?’ 8 And after answering, he said to him, ‘Sir, let it be this year until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 And if indeed it should bear fruit, good, but if not, you will cut it down.’”

A Woman with a Disabling Spirit

10 And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, a woman having a disabling spirit for eighteen years, and she was bent over and not able to fully straighten herself. 12 And after seeing her, Jesus called her over and said to her, “Woman, you have been freed from your disability.” 13 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God. 14 But after answering, the ruler of the synagogue, very displeased because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, “There are six days in which it is necessary to work, in them therefore come be healed and not on the Sabbath.” 15 And after answering, the Lord said to him, “Hypocrites! Does each of you all on the Sabbath not untie his ox or donkey from the manger and after leading it away, water it? 16 And this woman being a daughter of Abraham, who Satan bound for eighteen years, is it not necessary for her to be released from this bond on the day of the Sabbath?” 17 And while saying these things, all His adversaries were being shamed, and all the crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things being done by Him.

The Mustard Seed and the Leaven

18 Then He said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And what will I compare it to? 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which after taking, a man sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”

20 And again He said, “To what will I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, that after taking, a woman hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.”

The Narrow Door

22 And He went through the towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are few being saved?” And He said to them, 24 Strivefm to enter through the narrow door. For many, I say to you all, will seek to enter and will not be strong enough. 25 When the master of the house rises and shut the door, and you all begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ and after answering, he will say to you all, ‘I do not know where you all come from.’ 26 Then you will all begin to say, ‘We ate and drank before you, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 And he will say, ‘I am telling you all, I do not know where you all come from. Depart from me all you workers of unrighteousness!’ 28 In that place, there will be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you all see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you all yourselves are being cast out. 29 And they will come from east and west and from north and south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, there are those last who will be first and those who are first who will be last.”

Lament over Jerusalem

31 In that hour some Pharisees came saying to Him, “Come out and go from here because Herod wishes to kill you.” 32 And He said to them, “After going, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and performfn cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I will be perfected. 33 Nevertheless, it is necessary for me today and tomorrow and the next day to go because it is not acceptable that a prophet perish outside of Jerusalem.’ 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the killer of prophets and stoner of those after having been sent to it! How often I wished to gather together your children as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you all did not wish! 35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I say to you all, you all will not seefo me until the time when you all say, ‘Blessed is He coming in the name of the Lord.’”

Healing of a Man on the Sabbath

14 And it came to pass on the Sabbath, He went to eat bread at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching Him carefullyfp. 2 And behold, there was a man before Him who had dropsy. 3 And after answering, Jesus said to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to heal, or not?” 4 But they remained silent. And after taking him, He healed him and sent him away. 5 And He said to them, “Which son or ox of yours, will fall into a well and they will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 6 And they were not strong enough to reply againstfq these things.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

7 And He told a parable to those after having been called, while paying attention to how they were choosing the places of honor, saying to them, 8 “When you are called by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit downfr in a place of honor so that someone more honorable than you is not called by him, 9 and after coming, the one who called you and him will say to you, ‘Give this person a place,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are called, after going, sit in the lowest place in order that when the one who called you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then it will be honor to you before all those sitting at table with you. 11 Because everyone exalting himself will be humbled, and the one humbling himself will be exalted.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

12 And He also said to the man after having invited Him, “When you make a dinner or a banquet, do not callfs your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, so that they cannot also invite you in return, and you be repaid. 13 But when you make a feast, call the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed because they are not able to repay you. For it will be repaid to you in the resurrection of the just.”

15 And after hearing these things, one of those reclining at table said to Him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16 But He said to him, “A man was making a great banquet, and he called many. 17 And he sent his servant at the hour of the banquet to say to those after having been called, ‘Come, because now it is ready.’ 18 And they all as one began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I have need, after going, to see it. I ask you, have me excusedft.’ 19 And another said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. I ask you, have me excused.’ 20 And another said, ‘I married a wife, and for this reason, I am unable to come.’ 21 And after coming, the servant announced these things to his master. Then after becoming angry, the master of the house said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and the poor and crippled and blind and lame bring here.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the road and hedges and compel people to come in in order that my house may be filled. 24 For I say you all, that none of those men after having been called will taste my banquet.’”

The Cost of Discipleship

25 And great crowds were going with Him, and after turning He said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hatefu his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters and yet even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bearfv his own cross and come after me is not able to be my disciple. 28 For who out of you all wishing to build a tower, does not first, after sitting down, count the cost if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, after laying his foundation and is not strong enough to finish, all those seeing may begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not strong enough to finish.’ 31 Or what king going out to encounter another king in war will not first sit downfw and deliberate if he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, after sending a delegation, he asks for terms of peace. 33 So, therefore, any out of you all who does not renounce all that he has is not able to be my disciple.

Salt Without Taste Is Worthless

34 “Therefore, salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how will it be seasoned? 35 Not for the earth or for the manure pile it is useful. It is thrown away. The one having ears to hear, hear.”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

15 And all the tax collectors and sinners were approaching Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were murmuring, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

3 And He said to them this parable, saying, 4 “What man out of you all having one hundred sheep and after losing one of them, does not abandon the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go to the lost one until he finds it? 5 And after finding it, he lays it on his shoulders rejoicing. 6 And after coming to his house, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you all that there will be more joy in heaven over one repenting sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not have need of repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coinsfx, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek carefully until she finds it? 9 And after finding it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I found the coin that I lost.’ 10 Just so, I say to you all, there is joy before the angels of God over one repenting sinner.”

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

11 And He said, “A man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give to me the share of property belonging to me.’ And he divided the property between them. 13 And not many days later, after gathering all together, the younger son journeyed into a far country and there squandered his property living wastefully. 14 And after spending everything, a severe famine arose in that country and he began to be in need. 15 And after going, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he was desiring to be fed out of the pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving him anything.

17 “And after coming to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father have excess bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 After arising, I will go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I sinned against heaven and before you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’ 20 And after rising, he came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion and after running, fell on his neckfy and fervently kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I sinned against heaven and before you. I am not worthy to be called your son.’ fz 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Quickly bring the best robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and after eating we may celebrate. 24 Since this my son who was dead and is alive again, he was lost, and was found.’ And they began to celebrate.

25 And his older son was in the field, and as he was coming, he drew near to the house, and he heard music and dancing. 26 And after calling one of the servants, he was inquiring what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father killed the fattened calf because he received him healthy.’ 28 But he was angry and was not wishing to go in. But his father, after coming out, was calling him. 29 But after answering his father, he said, ‘Behold, these many years I served you, and I never disobeyed your command, and you never gave me a young goat that I may celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came after devouring your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ 31 But he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 And it was necessary to celebrate and rejoice because this your brother was dead and is alive, and after having been lost, he was found.’”

The Parable of the Dishonest Manager

16 And He also said to the disciples, “A man who was rich had a manager, and this was accused to him that he was wasting his goods. 2 And after calling him, he said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give the account of your management, for you are no longer able to manage.’ 3 And the manager said in himself, ‘What should I do because my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I decided what I will do in order that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ 5 And after calling each one of the debtors of his master, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘One hundred bathsga of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill and after sitting down, quickly, write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And you, how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘One hundred corsgb of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ 8 And the master praised the unjust manager because he did wiselygc. For the sons of this age are wiser than the sons of light in their generation. 9 And I say to you all, make friends for yourselves out of the wealth of unrighteousness in order that when it might fail, they may receive you all into the eternal dwellings.

10 “The one who is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and the one who is unjust in very little is also unjust in much. 11 If then, you all were not faithful in the unjust wealth, who will entrust to you all the true riches? 12 And if you all were not faithful in what was another man's, who will give to you all what is your own? 13 No servant is able to serve two masters, for the one he will hategd, and the other he will love, or he will hold himself to the one and despise the other. You all are not able to serve God and riches.”

The Law and the Kingdom of God

14 But the Pharisees, being lovers of money, were hearing all these things and were deridingge Him. 15 And He said to them, You all are those justifying yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. Because what is exalted among men is an abomination before God.

16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John. From then, the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into itgf. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dotgg of the Law to fail.

Divorce and Remarriage

18 “Everyone divorcing his wife and marrying another commits adultery, and the one marrying a woman after having been divorced from her husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen feasting sumptuously every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate after having been covered with sores, 21 and he was desiring to be fed from what fell from the rich man's table. But the dogs also came and were licking his sores. 22 And it came to pass, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. And the rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, after lifting his eyes while being in torment, he saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his bosom. 24 And after calling out, he said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercygh on me and send Lazarus in order that he may dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue because I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you received your good in your life and Lazarus, likewise, the bad, but now he is comforted here, and you are tormented. 26 And in all this between us and you, a great chasm has been set that those wishing to pass from here to you all are not able, and no one may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you may send him to my father's house—28 for I have five brothers—so that he may witness to them in order that they not also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. Let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 And he said to him, ‘If Moses and the Prophets they do not hear, neither will they be persuaded if someone may rise from the dead.’”

Temptations to Sin

17 And He said to His disciples, “It is impossible for offensesgi not to come, but woe through whom they come! 2 It is better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he had been thrown into the sea than that he might offend one of these little ones. 3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, reprimand him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if seven times per day he sins against you, and seven times turns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you will forgive him.”gj

Increase Our Faith

5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Addgk to us faith!” 6 And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you all could say to this sycamore treegl, Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you all.

Unworthy Servants

7 “And who of you all having a servant plowing or keeping sheep, after coming out of the field, will say to him, ‘Immediately after coming, recline at table’? 8 But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare a supper, and after girding yourselfgm, serve me until I eat and drink and after these things you will eat and drink’? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did the things commanded? 10 So also you all, when you all might do all being commanded to you all, say, ‘We are useless servants; what was our duty to do, we have done.’”

Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers

11 And it came to pass on the way to Jerusalem, He also was passing through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And while entering into a village, He was met by ten leprous men who stood at a distance. 13 And they lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercygn on us.” 14 And after seeing, He said to them, “After going, show yourselves to the priests.” And it came to pass as they went they were cleansed. 15 But one of them, after seeing that he was healed, turned back with a loud voice glorifying God, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet thanking Him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 And after answering, Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found returning to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “After rising, go; your faith has saved you.”

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 And after being askedgo by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God comes, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with observational evidence, 21 nor will they say, ‘Behold, here!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is within you all.”

22 And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you all will earnestly desire one of the days to see the Son of Man, and you all will not see it. 23 And they will say to you all, ‘Behold, there!’ or ‘Behold, here!’ Do not go out or pursuegp them. 24 For as the lightning flashes, lighting up one part of the sky to another, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25 But first it is necessary He suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage until the day when Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise, as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, and building, 29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— 30 so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, he who will be on the housetop with his goods in the house not come downgq to take them away, and likewise, the one who is in the field not turn backgr. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I say to you all, in that night, there will be two in one bed. One will be taken, and the other left. 35 There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”gs 37 And after answering, they said to Him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vulturesgt will gather.”

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 And He was telling them a parable to the effect it is necessary always to pray and not to lose heart, 2 saying, “There was a judge in a certain city not fearing God and not respecting man. 3 And a widow was in that city, and she was coming to him saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 And he was not wishing for awhile, but afterward he said in himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will justify her in order that by her continual coming, she not beat me downgu.’” 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And does God not give justicegv to His elect, crying to Him day and night? And is He not patient with them? 8 I say to you all that He will give justice to them quickly. But after the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?”gw

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9 And He also told to some trusting in themselves that they were righteous and despising others this parable: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, after standing by himself, was praying this: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, after having stood far off, was not wishing to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be mercifulgx to me, a sinner!’ 14 I say to you all, this man went down to his house after having been justified rather than the other. For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, but the one humbling himself will be exalted.”

Let the Children Come to Me

15 And they were also bringing infants to Him in order that He might touch them. But after seeing, the disciples were reprimanding them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him, saying, Allow the children come to me and do not restraingy them, for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 Amen, I say to you all, whoever does not receivegz the kingdom of God as a child does not enterha into it.”

The Rich Ruler

18 And a ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what should I dohb so I will inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness,hc Honor your father and mother.’”hd 21 But he said, “All these I kept from my youth.” 22 And after hearing, Jesus said to him, “One thing you still lack. All that you have sell and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 And after hearing these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 And after seeing him become sad, Jesus said, “How difficultly those having wealth enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.” 26 And after hearing, they said, “And who is able to be saved?” 27 And He said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “Behold, after leaving our homes, we followed you.” 29 And He said to them, “Amen, I say to you all, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 who will not receivehe many times more in this time, and in the coming age, eternal life.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31 And after taking the twelve, He said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be completed. 32 For He will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. 33 And after flogging Him, they will kill Him, and on the third day, He will rise.” 34 And they understood none of these things, and this saying was hidden from them, and they were not comprehending the things being said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35 And it came to pass, as He approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And after hearing a crowd going by, he was inquiring what this meant. 37 And they announced to him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy onhf me!” 39 And those who were in front were admonishing him in order that he might be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And after stopping, Jesus commanded him to be brought to Him. And after coming near, He asked him, 41 “What do you wish I do for you?” And he said, “Lord, that I recover my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, Recover your sight; your faith has saved you.” 43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed Him, glorifying God. And all the people, after seeing, gave praise to God.

Jesus and Zacchaeus

19 And after entering, He was passing through Jericho. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus is and was not able on account of the crowd because he was small in stature. 4 And after running to the front, he climbed up into a sycamore tree in order that he may see Him because He was about to pass that way. 5 And as He came to the place, after looking up, Jesus said to him, “Zacchaeus, after hurrying, come down, for it is necessary for me to stay at your house today.” 6 And after hurrying, he came down and received Him joyfully. 7 And after seeing, they all were grumbling, saying, “He went in to be the guest of a sinful man.” 8 And after standing, Zacchaeus said to the Lord, “Behold, the half of my goods, Lord I give to the poor. And if I defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation came to this house because he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The Parable of the Ten Minas

11 While hearing these things, He addedhg, telling a parable because He was near to Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God immediately was about to appear. 12 Then He said, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. 13 And after calling ten servants to himself, he gave them ten minashh, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not wish this man to rule over us.’ 15 And it came to pass, when he returned after receiving the kingdom, he said these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him in order that he might know what they gained by doing business. 16 The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina gained ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because in a very little you were faithful, you will have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Your mina, Lord, made five minas.’ 19 And he also said to this servant, ‘And you be over five cities.’ 20 And another came saying, ‘Behold, your mina which I was keeping reserved in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you because you are a harsh man. You take what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, ‘I will judge you out of your own words, evil servant! You have known that I am a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 And why did you not put my money in the bank? And after coming I might have collected it with interest!’ 24 And to those after having stood by, he said, ‘Take from him the mina and give it to the one having ten minas— 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’— 26 ‘I say to you all that to everyone having it will be given, but from the one not having, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But to these enemies of mine who after not wishing me to rule over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

The Triumphal Entry

28 And after saying these things, He was going ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 And it came to pass when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany to the mount being called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, Go into the village in front of you in which, while entering, you all will find a colt after having been tied on which no man has ever sat, and after untying it, bring it. 31 And if anyone asks you all, ‘Why are you all untying it?’ you all will say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”hi 32 And after going, those after having been sent found it just as He had told them. 33 And while untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you all untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And while going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 And while drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of His disciples began rejoicing and to praise God in a loud voice for all the mighty works that they saw, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King coming in the name of the Lord!hj Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, reprimand your disciples.” 40 And after answering, He said, “I say to you all, if these will be silent, the stones will cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 And as He drew near, after seeing the city, He wept over it, 42 saying, “If you knew on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 Since the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and confine you on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground and you and your children within you. And they will not leave stone upon stone within you because you did not know the time of your inspectionhk.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

45 And after entering the temple, He began to throw out those selling, 46 saying to them, “It has been written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’hl but you have made it a denhm of robbers.”hn

47 And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy Him, 48 but they were not finding anything they might do, for all the people were hanging on His words.

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

20 And it came to pass one day, while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up 2 and said to Him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gaveho you this authority.” 3 And after answering, He said to them, “I also will ask you all a question, and you all tell me: 4 the baptism of John, was it from heaven or from man?” 5 And they deliberated to themselves, saying, “If we say,hp ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you all not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced John was a prophet.” 7 And they answered that they did not know where it was from. 8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you all by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

9 And He began to say to the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 And in season, he sent a servant to the tenants in order that they would give him the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants sent him away empty-handed after beating him. 11 And again, he sent another servant. But they also, after beating and treating him shamefully, sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third. And they also, after wounding this one, threw him out. 13 And the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What will I do? I will send my beloved son, perhaps this one they will respect.’ 14 But after seeing, the tenants were deliberating to one another, saying, ‘This is the heir. We should kill him in order that the inheritance might be ours.’ 15 And after throwing him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What, therefore, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” But after hearing, they said, “Surely not!” 17 But after looking at them, He said, “What then is this that has been written:

“‘The stone that the builders rejected,

this one became the cornerstonehq’?hr

18 Everyone after falling on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on Him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them He said this parable. 20 And after observing, they sent spies pretending themselves to be righteous in order that they might take hold of His words, so as to deliver Him over to the power and authority of the governor. 21 And they asked Him saying, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly and do not show partialityhs, but truly teach the way of God. 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar or not?” 23 But after fully perceiving their craftiness, He said to them, 24 Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar's.” 25 And He said to them, “Then give the things that are Caesar's to Caesar, and the things that are God's to God.” 26 And they were not strong enough to catch Him in what He said in the presence of the people, but after marveling at His answer, they became silent.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

27 And after coming to Him, some of the Sadducees, those saying a resurrection is not to be, asked Him 28 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us, if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, his brother should take the widow and raise up an offspring for his brother. 29 Therefore, there were seven brothers. And the first, after taking a wife, died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven did not leave children and died. 32 Afterward, the woman also died. 33 The woman, therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”

34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those after being deemed entirely deserving to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they are not able to die anymore because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed in the passage about the bush as he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.ht 38 And He is not God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.” 39 And after answering, some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you spoke well.” 40 For they no longer were daring to ask Him any question.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 But He said to them, “How do they say that the Christ is David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at my right hand,

43 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’hu

44 David therefore calls Him Lord, and how is He his son?”

Beware of the Scribes

45 And while hearing all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 Pay attention to the scribes wishing to walk around in robes and loving greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who devour the houses of widows' and as a pretensehv make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow's Offering

21 And after looking up, He saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coinshw. 3 And He said, “Truly, I say to you all, that this poor widow put in more than all of them. 4 For they all out of their abundance gave their gifts, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

5 And while some were speaking of the temple that with good stones and offerings it had been adorned, He said, 6 “These things that you all see, the days will come in which there will not be left stone upon stone that will not be thrown down.” 7 And they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8 And He said, You all see that you are not led astray.hx For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am!’ and, ‘The time approaches!’ Do not gohy after them. 9 But when you all hear of wars and instabilitieshz, do not be terrifiedia, for it is necessary these things be first, but the end is not immediate.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

10 Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this, they will put their hands on you and persecute you all, delivering you all to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you all before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13 It will be your opportunity for you all to witness. 14 Put it therefore in your hearts not to premeditate your defense, 15 for I will give you all a mouth and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 And you all will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends and they will kill some of you. 17 And you all will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 And a hair out of your head will not perish.ib 19 By your patience, you all obtained your lives.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “But when you all see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then those in Judea flee to the mountains, and those in the midst of it depart, and those in the country not enter intoic it 22 because these are the days of vengeance to fulfill all that has been written. 23 Woe to pregnant womenid and those nursing infants in those days! For there will be a great distress on the earth and wrath against this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting from fear and foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of heaven will be stirred up. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 And when these things begin to be, straighten up and raise your heads because your redemptionie is drawing near.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 And He said a parable to them: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they bloom now, you all while seeing for yourselves know that now summer is near. 31 So also you all, when you all see these things taking place, you all know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Amen, I say to you all that this generation will not pass awayif until all comes to pass. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

34 But pay attention to yourselves so that your hearts are not burdened in hangoverig and drunkenness and cares of this life and that day come upon you all suddenly 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all those sitting on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you all may overcome to escape all these things about to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And those days, He was in the temple teaching, but at night while going out, He was lodging on the mount being called Olivet. 38 And all the people came early in the morning to Him in the temple to hear Him.

The Passover with the Disciples

7 And the day of Unleavened Bread came on which it was necessary to sacrifice Passover lamb. 8 And He sent out Peter and John, after saying, “After going, prepare the Passover for us in order that we may eat it.” 9 And they said to Him, “Where do you wish we prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “Behold, after entering into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you all. Follow him into the house that he enters, 11 and you all will say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you all a large upper room after having been furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And after going, they found it as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

14 And when the hour came, He reclined at table and the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you all before I suffer. 16 For I say to you all that I will not eatih it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And after taking a cup and giving thanks, He said, Take this and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I say to you all that from now on, I will not drinkii from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And after taking bread and giving thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my bodyij, being given for you all. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after dinner, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, being poured out for you all. 21 But behold, the hand of the one betraying me is with me on the table. 22 Since the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 And it came to pass a dispute also arose among them which of them He regarded to be the greatest. 25 But He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you all. But the greatest among you all become as the youngest and the leader as the one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, the one reclining at table or one serving? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am in the midst of you all as the one serving.

28 “But you all are those after having remained with me in my trials, 29 and I appoint you all, as my Father appointed me, a kingdom 30 in order that you all may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to you all to sift like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you in order that your faith not failik. And after turning back, strengthenil your brothers.” 33 But Peter said to Him, “Lord, with you I am ready to go both to prison and to death.” 34 But He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day until three times you deny to know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And He said to them, “When I sent you all with no moneybag or backpack or sandals, did you all lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, the one having a moneybag take it and likewise also a backpack. And the one not having sell his cloak and buy a sword. 37 For I say to you all that this Scripture is necessary to be fulfilled in me: ‘And with the transgressors He was numbered.’im For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is sufficient.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 And after coming out, He went, as was His custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. 40 And after coming to the place, He said to them, Pray not to enter into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw and after kneeling down, was praying, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done.” 43 And there appeared to Him an angel from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And after being in agony, He was praying more earnestly and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the earth.in 45 And after rising from prayer and coming to the disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you all sleeping? After rising, pray that you all not enter intoio temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While He was still speaking, behold a crowd, and the man being called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. And he approached Jesus to kiss Him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And those around Him, after seeing what would follow, said, “Lord, should weip strike with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 And after answering, Jesus said, Enough of this!” And after touching his ear, He healed him. 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders after coming out against Him, “Did you all come out as against a robber with swords and clubs? 53 Daily I was with you all in the temple. You all did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour and the authority of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 And after seizing Him, they led Him away and brought Him into the high priest's house, and Peter was following at a distance. 55 And after kindling a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sitting down together, Peter was sitting down in the middle of them. 56 And a servant girl, after seeing him sitting in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with Him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him, woman.” 58 And a little later, another after seeing him said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about one hour, another was insisting, saying, “Truly, this man also was with Him, for he also is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And after turning, the Lord looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord when He had said, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62 And after coming out, he wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

63 And the men who were holding Him in custody were mocking Him while beating Him. 64 And after blindfolding Him, they were asking Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is it striking you?” 65 And many other blasphemous things they were saying against Him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 And as the day came, the elders of the people gathered together both chief priests and scribes. And they led Him away to their counciliq, 67 saying, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you all, you all will not believe, iris 68 and if I ask you all, you all will not answerit.iu 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be sitting at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “You, then, are the Son of God?” And He said to them, “You all say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further witness do we need? For we heard it ourselves from His lips.”

Jesus Before Pilate

23 And after rising, the whole company of them arose and brought Him before Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a king.” 3 And Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And after answering, He said to him, You say.” 4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” 5 But they were insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”

Jesus Before Herod

6 And Pilate, after hearing, asked if the man is Galilean. 7 And after learning that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him over to Herod, being himself in Jerusalem in those days. 8 And Herod, after seeing Jesus, was very glad, for he was for a long time wishing to see Him because he had heard about Him and he was hoping to see some sign done by Him. 9 And he was asking Him at length, but He answered him nothing. 10 But the chief priests and scribes stood by, vehemently accusing Him. 11 And after despising and mocking Him and clothing Him in beautiful garments, Herod and his soldiers sent Him back to Pilate. 12 And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that day, for before they had been at enmity with each other.

13 And Pilate after calling together the chief priests and rulers and the people, 14 said to them, “You all brought me this man as a deceiveriv of the people. And behold, I, after examining Him before you all, did not find in this man guilt of any of your charges against Him. 15 Neither did Herod, for he sent Him back to us. And behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 After punishing Him, then I will release Him.” iw

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

18 But they all cried out together, saying, “Away with this man and release to us Barabbas” 19 who because of an insurrection started in the city and a murder, was in prison. 20 And again, Pilate addressed them, wishing to release Jesus, 21 but they were shouting, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 A third time he said to them, “For what evil did this man do? No guilt deserving death was found in Him. After punishing Him, then I will release him.” 23 But they were pressing on, demanding with loud cries to crucify Him. And their voices prevailed. 24 And Pilate judged their demand to be granted. 25 And he released the man who, because of insurrection and murder, had been thrown in prison, for whom they were asking, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.

The Crucifixion

26 And as they led Him away, after seizing one Simon of Cyrene while coming in from the country, they laid on him the cross to carry behind Jesus. 27 And following Him, a great multitude of the people and women who were mourning a lamenting for Him. 28 And after turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weepix for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 Since behold, the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’iy 31 Because if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when the wood is dry?”

32 And two others criminals were also being led away to be put to death with Him. 33 And when they came to the place being called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals: one on His right and one on His left. 34 And Jesus was saying, “Father, forgiveiz them, for they do not know what they do.”ja And while dividing His garments, they cast lots. 35 And the people had stood by, watching, but the rulers were deriding Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, the Chosen One!” 36 And the soldiers mocked Him while coming up offering Him sour winejb 37 and said, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 And there was also an inscription over Him,jc “This is the King of the Jews.”jd

39 And one of the criminals who were hanging was blaspheming Him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But after answering, the other, rebuking him said, “Do you not fear God since you are in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed rightly, for we are receiving the due reward for our deeds, but this man did nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And He said to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

The Death of Jesus

44 It was now about the sixth hourje, and darkness was over the whole earth until the ninth hourjf 45 after the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in the middle. 46 And after calling out in a loud voice, Jesus said, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit!”jg And after saying this, He breathed out His last. 47 And after seeing what had taken place, the centurion was glorifying God, saying, “Certainly this man was righteous!” 48 And all the crowds, after assembling for this spectacle and seeing what had taken place, were returning home while beating their chests. 49 And all His acquaintances had stood at a distance, and the women following Him from Galilee watching these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 And behold a man named Joseph, being a counselorjh and a good and righteous man 51 — who had not consented to their decision and action — from Arimathea, a town of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man, after going to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And after taking it down, he wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid Him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one was yet laying. 54 And it was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was dawning. 55 And after following, the women who were coming with Him from Galilee saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 And after returning, they prepared spices and ointments.

And on the Sabbath, indeed they rested according to the commandment.

The Resurrection

24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they prepared. 2 And they found the stone having been rolled away from the tomb, 3 but after going in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it came to pass, while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining clothing. 5 And being frightened and bowing their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you all seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but He rose. Remember how He told you all while He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that it is necessary the Son of Man be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered His words, 9 and after returning from the tomb they announced all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 And it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who were telling these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them as an idle tale, and they were not believing them. 12 But after rising, Peter ran to the tomb, and after stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves and he went home marveling at what had happened.

On the Road to Emmaus

13 And behold on that day, two of them were going to a village being sixty stadiaji from Jerusalem, named Emmaus, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 And it came to pass while they were talking and discussing, and Jesus Himself, after drawing near, was going with them. 16 And their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 And after answering, the one named Cleopas said to Him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know what happened in it in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to be condemned to death and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that He is the one to redeem Israel. But yet with all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women of our company amazed us. After being at the tomb early in the morning 23 and when not finding His body, they came back, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He lives. 24 Some of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women said, but Him they did not see.” 25 And He said to them, “O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets said! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into His glory?” 27 And after beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he thoroughly explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

28 And they approached the village to which they were going, and He acted as if to go further, 29 and they compelled Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us because it is toward evening, and the day is now over.” And He went in to stay with them. 30 And it came to pass, when He was at table with them, after taking the bread, He blessed it and after breaking it, He was giving it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. And He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He was talking to us on the way, as He was opening to us the Scriptures?” 33 And after rising that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven, and those who were with them after gathering together, 34 saying, “Certainly, the Lord rose and appeared to Simon!” 35 And they were declaring what happened on the road and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, He stood in the midst of them and said to them, “Peace to you all!” 37 But after being startled and frightened, they were thinking they saw a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you all troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet that I am He. Touch me and see, since a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And after saying this, He showed them His hands and feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were wondering, He said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave Him a piece of broiled fish.jj 43 And after taking it, He ate it before them.

44 And He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you all while I am still with you all because it is necessary all the Scriptures be fulfilled in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning me.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “This has been written, the Christ should sufferjk and rise from the dead on the third day 47 and in his name repentance and forgiveness of sins be preached to all the nations after beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You all are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you all, but you all stay in the city until you all are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and after lifting up His hands, He blessed them. 51 And it came to pass, while He was blessing them, He parted from them and was being carried up into heaven. 52 And after worshipping Him they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
