About the ELV
The Essentially Literal Version (ELV) is an original English translation of the Greek New Testament by Evan Gargiulo, published in 2022. It was translated directly from the Greek text of the Novum Testamentum Graece (28th edition, Nestle–Aland) without an intermediary translation standing between the Greek and the English.
As the name suggests, the ELV is essentially literal: the original word order is preserved as far as English allows, and Greek words are rendered consistently rather than varied for style, so the repetition and emphasis of the original authors come through. Where the Greek resists smooth English — significant manuscript variants, technical terms, difficult readings — the footnotes tell you what the original says. All 1,873 footnotes from the printed edition appear on this site beside the verses they annotate.
To go deeper into the translation philosophy, read the Introduction and Preface, or explore the Greek Language primer and Word Studies from the book's front matter.
