ELVEssentially Literal Version

According to Johna

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Wordb, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.c 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into existence through Him, and without Him, not one thing came into existence that had come into existence. 4 In Him was lifed,e and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcomef it.

6 There was a man, after having been sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness in order that he may bear witness about the light that all might believe through him. 8 He was not that light but came that he might bear witness about that light.

9 The true light, which gives light to all men, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into existence through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, He gave them authority to become children of God to those believing in His name 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we sawg His glory as the only Sonh from the Father full of grace and truth. 15 (John witnessed about Him and has cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He, coming after me, ranks before me because He was before me.’”) 16 Since from His fullness, we all received grace fori grace. 17 Since the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, the only Godj, being in the bosomk of the Father, He made Him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem in order that they should ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you?, in order that we might give an answer to those sending us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’l as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 (And they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 And they asked him and said to him, “Why, then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ nor Elijah nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them saying, “I baptize with water, in the midst of you all has stood one who you all do not know. 27 He coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandal.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30

This is He of whom I said, ‘after me comes a man who ranks before me because He was before me.’ 31 And I have not known Him, but in order that He might be revealed to Israel, for this purpose I came baptizing with water.” 32 And John witnessed, saying, ”I have seen the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him. 33 And I did not know Him, but He sending me to baptize with water, the same said to me, ‘On whoever you all see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, this is the One baptizing with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and witnessed that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35 The next day, again, John had stood with two of his disciples 36 and after looking at Jesus walking by, said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. 38 And after turning and seeing them following, Jesus said to them, “What are you all seeking?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, Come and you all will see.” Then they came and saw where He was staying and stayed with Him that day. It was about the tenth hourm. 40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two after hearing John and following him. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiahn” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. After looking at him, Jesus said, You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which means Petero).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day, He wished to go out to Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, Follow me.” 44 And Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to Him, “Whom Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets, we have found, Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to Him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him and said about him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you all. You all will see heaven openedp, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

The Wedding at Cana

2 And on the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 And Jesus also was called with His disciples to the wedding. 3 And after the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “What does this have to do with me, woman? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you all, do.”

6 And there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding two or three measuresq. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 And as the master of the feast tasted the water had becomer wine, and he had not known where it came from (but the servants had known after having drawn the water). The master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and when they are drunk, the worse wine. You have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and manifested His glory. And His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this, He went down into Capernaum—and His mother and His brothers and His disciples—and there they stayed not many days.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those selling oxen and sheep and pigeons and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And after making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple with the sheep and oxen. And He poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And to those selling pigeons He said, Take these things away; do not makes my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written, “The zealoust of your house will devour me.”u

18 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, ”What sign do you show us since you do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days, I will raise it.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you in three days will raise it?” 21 But He was speaking about the temple of His body. 22 When, therefore, He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He was saying this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus spoke.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23 And when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in His name while seeing His signs that He was doing. 24 But Jesus Himself was not entrusting Himself to them because He knew all people 25 and not needing that anyone bear witness about man, for He Himself knewv what was in man.

You Must Be Born Again

3 And there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Him by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that from God you have come as a teacher, for no one is able to do these signs that you do unless God is with Him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, unless one may be born from abovew, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How is a man able to be born when he is old? Is he able to enter into the womb of his mother a second time and be born?” x 5 Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one is born of water and Spirit, he is not able to enter the kingdom of God. 6 That after having been born of the flesh is flesh, and that after having been born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvely that I said to you, ‘It is necessary you all be born from above.’ 8 The windz blows where it wishes, and its sound you all hear, but you all do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone after having been born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, You are the teacher of Israel, and these things you do not know? 11 Amen, amen, I say to you that what we know, we speak of, and what we have seen, we witness of, and our witness you all do not receive. 12 If the earthly things I said to you all you all do not believe, how, if I tell you all heavenly things, will you all believe? 13 And no one has ascended into heaven except He after descending from heaven, the Son of Man.aa 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so it is necessary the Son of Man be lifted up 15 in order that anyone believing in Him may have eternal lifeab.

For God So Loved the World

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son in order that anyone believing in Him does not perishac but may have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world in order that He may judge the world, but in order that the world may be saved through Him. 18 The one believing in Him is not judged, but the one not believing has been judged already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and the people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. 20 For all those practicingad wicked things hate the light and do not come to the light in order that his works not be exposed. 21 But he doing the truth comes to the light in order that his works may be clearly seen because they are carried out in God.”

John the Baptist Exalts Christ

22 After these things, Jesus and His disciples went into the Judean countryside, and there He remained with them and was baptizing. 23 And John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim because water was plentiful there and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John was not yet put in prison).

25 Then a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you had witnessed about—behold, this man is baptizing, and all are going to Him.” 27 John answered and said, ”A man is not able to receive even one thing unless it is given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear witness about me that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but that I have been sent before Him.’ 29 The one having the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom, the one standing and hearing him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore, this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 It is necessary He increase, and I decrease.”

31 He coming from above is above all. He, who is of the earth, belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He coming from heaven is above all. 32 What He has seen and heard, this He bears witness to, and no one receives His witness. 33 He, after receiving His witness, attestsae that God is true. 34 For whom God sent utters the words of God, for without measure, He gives the Spirit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. 36 He believing in the Son has eternal life, but he not obeyingaf the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on Him.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

4 When therefore Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again into Galilee. 4 And it was necessary He pass through Samaria. 5 Then He came to a town of Samaria being called Sychar, near the field Jacob gave his son Joseph. 6 And Jacob's well was there; therefore Jesus, after having been wearied from His journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hourag.

7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her,Give me a drink.” 8 (For His disciples had gone away into the city in order that they might buy food.) 9 Then the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How do you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you had known the gift of God, and who it is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where therefore do you get the living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well and drank from it himself and his sons and his livestock?”ah 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone drinking of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks out of the water that I will give to him will never be thirstyai foreveraj. But the water that I will give to him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, giveak me this water in order that I will not be thirsty nor should come here to draw water.” 16 He said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You rightly said, ‘I have no husband’, 18 for you had five husbands, and now who you have is not your husband. This you have truly said.” 19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you all say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you all worship the Father. 22 You all worship what you all do not know; we worship what we know that salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people worshipping Him. 24 God is spirit, and it is necessary for those worshipping Him to worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to Him, “We know that Messiah is coming (He being called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, I am He speaking to you.”

27 And upon this came His disciples, and they were marveling that He was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar and went away into the town and said to the people, 29 ”Come, see a man who told me all that I did. Is not this the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to Him. 31 Meanwhile, His disciples were urging Him, saying, “Rabbi, eatal.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you all do not know of.” 33 Then the disciples were saying to one another, “Has anyone brought Him something to eat?” am 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is that I do the will of Him sending me, and I accomplishan His work. 35 Do you all not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you all, lift up your eyes and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already 36 the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life in order that the sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here is the saying true, ‘One is sowing, and another is reaping.’ 38 I sent you all to reap what you all have not labored for. Others have labored, and you all entered into their labor.”

39 And many Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the word of the woman's witnessing, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 Then as the Samaritans came to Him, they were asking Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His word, 42 and they were saying to the woman, “No longer because of what you said do we believe, for we ourselves have heard and know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

43 And after the two days, He departed from there to Galilee. 44 (For Jesus Himself witnessed that a prophet in his own hometown has no honor.) 45 Then when He came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed Him after having seen all that He did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast.

Jesus Heals an Official's Son

46 Then He came again to Cana in Galilee where He made the water wine. And there was an officialao whose son was illap in Capernaum. 47 After hearing that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to Him and asked Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you all see signs and wonders, you all do not believe.aq 49 The official said to Him, “Sir, come downar before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to Him, Go, your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus said to him and was going on his way. 51 And now, while going down, his servants met him, saying that his son lives. 52 Then he asked them the hour when he began to get better, then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh houras the fever left him.” 53 Then the father knew that it was in that hour when Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed and his whole house. 54 And this again is the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

5 After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 And there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool in Aramaic being called Bethesdaat, having five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalidsau—blind, lame, and paralyzed.av 5 And there was a man having an infirmity for thirty-eight years. 6 After seeing him lying there and knowing that he had already been there a long time, Jesus said to him, “Do you wish to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no one when the water is troubled that might put me into the pool, and while I am going, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was healed, and he took up his bed and was walking.

And that day was the Sabbath. 10 Then the Jews were saying to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, Take up your bed and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who saidaw to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed had not known who it was, for Jesus withdrew, a crowd being in the place. 14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, See, you have been made well! Sin no more in order that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and announced to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. 16 And for this reason, the Jews were persecuting Jesus because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Jesus Is Equal with God

18 Therefore, because of this, the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him because not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was also calling His own Father God, making Himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you all. The Son is not able to do anything of Himself except what He sees the Father doing. For whatever He does, this also the Son likewise does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all that He Himself is doing, and greater works than these He will he show to Him in order that you all may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them lifeax, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For the Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son 23 in order that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father. He, not honoring the Son, does not honor the Father sending Him. 24 Amen, amen, I say to you all that he hearing my word and believing Him sending me, has eternal life and does not enter into judgment but has passed from death to life.

25 “Amen, amen, I say to you all that an hour is coming and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and after hearing will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He gave the Son life to have in Himself. 27 And He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvelay at this, for an hour is coming when all those who are in the tombs will hear His voice 29 and come out, after doing good, to the resurrection of life and those, after practicing evilaz, to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

30I am not able to do anything my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just because I do not seek my will but the will of Him sending me. 31 If I witness about myself, my witness is not true.ba 32 There is another witnessing about me, and I know that the witness is true which he witnesses about me. 33 You all have sent to John, and he has witnessed to the truth. 34 But I do not receive the witness of man, but I say these things in order that you all may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you all wished to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But I have a greater witness than John. For the works that the Father has given me to finishbb—the same works that I do—bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father, after sending me, Himself has witnessed about me. His voice you all have never heard, His formbc you all have never seen, 38 and His word you all do not have dwelling within you all because who He sent, this one you all do not believe. 39 You all search the Scriptures because you all think in them you all have eternal life, and they are witnessing about me, 40 and you all do not wish to come to me that you all may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people, 42 but I have known you all—that the love of God you all do not have within yourselves. 43 I have come in the name of my Father and you all do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you all will receive him.bd 44 How are you all able to believe, receiving glory from one another and the glory from the only God you all do not seek? 45 Do not thinkbe that I will accuse you all to the Father. There is one accusing you all: Moses, in whom you all have hoped. 46 For if you all were believing Moses, you all would be believing me; for he wrote about me. 47 But if you all do not believe his writings, how will you all believe my words?”

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

6 After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following Him because they were seeing the signs that He was doing on the sick. 3 And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He was sitting with His disciples. 4 And the Passover was near: the feast of the Jews. 5 After lifting up His eyes and seeing a large crowd coming to Him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where should we buy bread in order that these people may eat?” 6 And He was saying this, testing him, for He Himself had known what He was about to do. 7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread in order that each of them may get a little.” 8 One of His disciples said to Him, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, Make the people sit down.” And there was much grass in the place. Then the men sat down—about five thousand in number. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks, He distributed them to those who were sitting. And likewise the fish, as much as they were wishing. 12 And as they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, in order that nothing may be lost.” 13 Then they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then the people, after seeing the sign that He did, were saying, “This is truly the Prophet coming into the world!” 15 Jesus then knew that they were about to come and seize Him in order to make Him king; He withdrew again to the mountain alone.

Jesus Walks on Water

16 When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 and after embarking into the boat, they were going across the sea to Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then after having rowed about twenty five or thirty stadiabf, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 And He said to them, I am, do not fearbg.” 21 Then they were wishing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

I Am the Bread of Life

22 The next day, the crowd, after having stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was only one boat there and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples went away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord gave thanks. 24 Then when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there—nor His disciples—they themselves embarked into boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 And after finding Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when had you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, you all are seeking me not because you all saw signs but because you all ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not laborbh, for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to eternal life which the Son of Man will give to you all. For Him God the Father sealed.” 28 Then they said to Him, “What should we do in order that we do the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God: that you all believe in whom He sent.” 30 Then they said to Him, “Then what sign do you do in order that we may see and believe you? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘Bread from heaven He gave to them to eat.’”bi 32 Then Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, Moses has not given you all the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you all the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He coming down from heaven and giving life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Sir, givebj us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; he coming to me does not hungerbk, and he believing in me will never thirstbl. 36 But I said to you all that you all have also seen me and do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one coming to me I never cast outbm. 38 Because I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of Him sendingbn me. 39 And this is the will of Him sending me that all that He has given to me I should not losebo anything but should raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone seeingbp the Son and believing in Him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 Then the Jews were grumbling about Him because He said, I am the bread coming down from heaven.” 42 And they said, “Is this not Jesus the son of Joseph whose father and mother we know? How now does He say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumblebq with one another. 44 No one is able to come to me unless the Father, sending me, drawsbr him, and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’bs Everyone, after hearing from the Father and learning, comes to me—46 not that anyone has seen the Father except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Amen, amen, I say to you all, the one believing has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread coming down from heaven that anyone may eat of it and not diebt. 51 I am the living bread after coming down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.bu And the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

52 Then the Jews were disputing with one another, saying, “How is this man able to give us His flesh to eat?” 53 Then Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, unless you all eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you all have no life in yourselves. 54 He, feedingbv on my flesh and drinking my blood, has eternal life, and I will raise Him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 He, feeding on my flesh and drinking my blood abides in me and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me—and I live because of the Father, also he feeding on me—likewise, he will live because of me. 58 This is the bread after coming down from heaven, not like the fathers ate and died. He, feeding on this bread, will live forever.” 59 This He said in the synagogue while teaching in Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 Then after many of His disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hardbw saying who is able to hear to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you all take offensebx at this? 62 What if then you all see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives lifeby. The flesh is no usebz at all. The words that I have spoken to you all are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you all who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those are not believingca, and who it is who will betray Him.) 65 And He was saying, “For this reason, I have told you all that no one is able to come to me unless it is given to him by the Father.”

66 After this, many of His disciples turned back and were no longer walking with Him. 67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, “And do you all wish to go?”cb 68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed and have come to know you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you all, the Twelve? And one of you all is a devil.” 71 And He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he was about to betray Him, being one of the Twelve.

Jesus at the Feast of Booths

7 And after these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was not wishing to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2 And the Jews' Feast of Booths was near. 3 Then His brothers said to Him, “Leavecc here and gocd to Judea in order that your disciples will also see your works that you do. 4 For no one works in secret and seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For none of His brothers were believing in Him. 6 Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is already here. 7 The world is not able to hate you all, but it hates me because I witness about it that its works are evil. 8 You all go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not been fulfilled.” 9 And after saying this, He remained in Galilee.

10 But as His brothers went up to the feast, then He also went up, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Then the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” 12 And there was much muttering about Him in the crowds. Indeed, some were saying, “He is a good man,” but others were saying, “No, but He is leading people astray.” 13 Yet no one was speaking openly about Him because of fear of the Jews.

14 And now in the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple and was teaching. 15 Then the Jews were marveling, saying, “How does this man know His letters, never having studied?” 16 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “My teaching is not mine but His who sent me. 17 If anyone wishes to do His will, he will know whether the teaching is of God or I speak of myself.ce 18 The one speaking of himself seeks his own glory, but the one seeking the glory of Him sending him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him. 19 Has Moses given you all the law?cf And none of you all does the law. Why do you all seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 For this reason Moses has given you all the circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath, you all circumcise a man. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath in order that he may breakcg the law of Moses, are you all angry with me because I made a man's whole body healthy on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judgech by appearances but judge with righteous judgment.”

Can This Be the Christ?

25 Then some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is not this the man who they seek to kill? 26 And behold, He speaks openly, and they say nothing to Him! Do the authorities truly know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ comes, no one knows where He comes from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You all know me, and you all know where I am from. And I have not come of myself, but Him sending me is true who you all do not know. 29 I know Him because I am from Him, and He sent me.” 30 Then they were seeking to arrest Him, and no one laid a hand on Him because His hour had not yet come. 31 And many of the crowd believed in Him and were saying, ”When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than this man did?”ci

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers in order that they should arrest Him. 33 Then Jesus said, “Yet a little while I am with you all, and I go to Him sending me. 34 You all will seek me and you all will not find me, and where I am, you all will not be able to go.” 35 Then the Jews said to one another, “Where is this man about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the Dispersioncj among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?ck 36 What is this saying which He Says, ‘You all will seek me and not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you all will not be able to go’?”

Rivers of Living Water

37 On the last great day of the feast, Jesus had stood up and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, come to me and drink. 38 The one believing in me, as the Scripture said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 And this He said about the Spirit, who those believing in Him were about to receive, for the Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division Among the People

40 Then after hearing these words, some of the crowd were saying, “This is truly the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” But some were saying, “Does the Christ come out of Galilee?cl 42 Do the Scriptures not say that out of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was, the Christ comes?” 43 Then there was a division among the crowd because of Him. 44 And some of them were wishing to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, “Why did you all not bring Him?” 46 The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, “Have you all also been deceived?cm 48 Do any of the authorities or the Pharisees believe in Him?cn 49 But this crowd, not knowing the law, is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus said to them, after going to Him before being one of them, 51 ”Does our law judge a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he does?”co 52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee?cp Search and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.”

[The earliest manuscripts do not include 7:53-8:11.] cq

The Woman Caught in Adultery

53 [[And they went each to his own house,

81 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning, He came again to the temple, and all the crowds came to Him, and after sitting down, He was teaching them. 3 And the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman after having been caught in adultery, and after placing her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 And in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Therefore, what do you say?” 6 And this they were saying, testing Him, in order that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus, after bending down, was writing with His finger on the ground. 7 and as they continuedcr asking Him, He stood up and said to them, “The one without sin among you all first throw a stone at her.” 8 And again, after bending down, He was writing on the ground. 9 And after hearing, they were going away one by one, beginning with the elders, and He was leftcs alone with the woman being in the midst. 10 After standing up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 And she said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on, no longer sin.”]]

I Am the Light of the World

12 Therefore again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. The one following me does not walkct in darkness but will have the light of life.” 13 Then the Pharisees said to Him, “You witness about yourself. Your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “And if I witness about myself, my witness is true because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you all do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You all judge according to the flesh, I do not judge anyone. 16 And even if I judge, my judgment is truecu because I am not alone, but I and the Father sending me. 17 And in your Law, it has been written that the witness of two men is true. 18 I am the one witnessing about myself, and the Father sending me witnesses about me.” 19 Then they were saying to Him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You all know neither me nor my Father. If you all knew me, you all would have known my Father also.” 20 These words He spoke in the treasury while teaching in the temple, and no one arrested Him because His hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said to them again, I am going away, and you all will seek me, and you all will die in your sin. Where I am going, you all are not able to come.” 22 Then the Jews were saying, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you all are not able to come’?”cv 23 And He was saying to them, “You all are from below; I am from above. You all are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 Then I told you all that you all would die in your sins, for if you all do not believecw that I am, you all will die in your sins.”cx 25 Then they were saying to Him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “From the beginning, what did I say to you all? 26 I have much to say and to judge about you all, but Him sending me is true, and what I heard about Him, these things I say to the world.” 27 They did not understand that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you all have lifted upcy the Son of Man, then you all will know that I am, and I do nothing on my own authority, but, as the Father taught me, these things I say. 29 And He sending me is with me. He did not leave me alone because I always do the things pleasing to Him.” 30 While saying these things, many believed in Him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 Then Jesus was saying to the Jews after having believed in Him, “If you all abide in my word, you all are truly my disciples, 32 and you all will know the truth, and the truth will set you all free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are offspring of Abraham and were never enslaved to anyone. How do you say, ‘You all will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, everyone doing sin is a slave to sin. 35 And the slave does not remain in the house forever. The Son remains forever. 36 Therefore, if the Son sets you all free, you all will be free indeed.cz 37 I know that you all are the offspring of Abraham, but you all seek to kill me because my word has no place in you. 38 What I have seen with my Father I say, and you all do what you all heard from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39 They answered and said to Him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you all are Abraham's children, you all would be doing the works of Abraham, 40 but now you all seek to kill me: a man who has told you all the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You all are doing the works of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We have not been born of illicit sexual intercourse. We have one Father—God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you all would love me, for I came from God, and I am here. For I have come not of my own accord, but He sent me. 43 Why do you all not understand what I say? Because you all are not able to hear my word. 44 You all are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you all wish to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you all do not believe me. 46 Which one of you all convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you all not believe me? 47 The one being of God hears the words of God. The reason you all do not hear is because you all are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

48 The Jews answered and said to Him, “Are we not right when we say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” da 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but honor my Father, and you all dishonor me. 50 But I do not seek my own glory. There is One seeking and judging. 51 Amen, amen, I say to you all, if anyone keeps my word, he will never seedb death forever.”dc 52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we have known that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets, and you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never see death forever.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham who died?dd And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing.de My Father is glorifying me of whom you all say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 And you all have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I should say that I do not know Him, I would be a liar like you all, but I know Him, and I keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he might see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 Then they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

9 As while passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents that he should be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 It is necessary for us to work the works of Him sending me while it is day; night is coming, when no one is able to work. 5 When I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 After saying these things, He spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back seeing.

8 Then the neighbors and those seeing him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man sitting and begging?” 9 Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He was saying, “I am.” 10 Then they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then after going and washing, I received my sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

13 They brought the man who was blind to the Pharisees. 14 And it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 Then again the Pharisees were asking him how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed and I see.” 16 Then some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How is a sinful man able to do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17 Then they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about Him since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”

18 Then the Jews did not believe concerning him because he was blind and received his sight until they called the parents of him after receiving his sight 19 and asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you all say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 Then his parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees, we do not know, nor who opened his eyes, we do not know. You all ask him. He is of agedf. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things because they were fearing the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23 For this reason, his parents said, ”He is of age, ask him.”

24 Then they called the man for the second time who was blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 Then he answered, “If He is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know that being blind, now I see.” 26 Then they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I told you all already. You all did not listen. Why gain do you all wish to hear? Do you all also wish to become His disciples?”dg 28 And they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are the disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but this man, we do not know where He comes from.” 30 The man answered and said to them, “For this is an amazing thing! That you all do not know where He comes from, and He opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper and does His will, He hears him. 32 Never since the world began was it heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man after having been born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, He would not be able to do anything.” 34 They answered and said to him, “You were born in complete sin, and you teach us?” And they threw him out.

35 Jesus heard that they threw him out and after finding him, said, “Do you believe in the Son of Mandh?” 36 He answered and said, “And who is He, sir, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen Him, and He is speaking with you.” 38 And he said, “I believe, Lord”, and he worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world in order that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees being near Him heard these things and said to Him, “Are we also blind?”di 41 Jesus said to them, “If you all were blind, you all would not have sin, but now that you all say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 “Amen, amen, I say to you all, he not entering through the door to the sheepfolddj but climbing in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he entering through the door is the shepherd. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and his own sheep he calls by name and leads them out. 4 When he brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 And a stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus said to them, but they did not know what it was that He was saying to them.

7 Then Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you all, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.dk 10 The thief does not come except in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came in order that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He, being a hired hand and not a shepherd who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and I know my own, and my own know me 15 as the Father knows me and I know the Father and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. It is necessary for me to bring them, and they will listen to my voice. And there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason, the Father loves me because I lay down my life in order that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from my Father.”

19 Again, there was a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 But many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is insane; why do you all listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demondl. Is a demon able to open the eyes of the blind?”dm

I and the Father Are One

22 Then the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 Then the Jews gathered around Him and were saying to Him, “How long do you lift up our souls?dn If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you all, and you all did not believe. The works that I do in the name of my Father witness about me, 26 but you all do not believe because you all are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me, 28 and I give them eternal life, and they do not perishdo forever, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father who has given them to me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the hand of the Father. 30 I and the Father are one.”

31 The Jews picked up stones again in order to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I showed you all from the Father; for which work are you all going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For good works we are not going to stone you but for blasphemy and because you, being a man, make yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your law, ‘I said, you all are gods’?dp 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture is not able to be broken— 36 whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world you all say, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not believedq me; 38 but if I do them, even though you all do not believedr me, believe the works in order that you all may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 Then they were seeking to arrest Him again, and He went out from their hand.

40 And He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing and remained there. 41 And many came to Him and were saying, “John indeed did no sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

The Death of Lazarus

11 And a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany from the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 And it was Mary, after anointing the Lord with ointment and wiping His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 Then the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, he who you love is ill.” 4 But after hearing, Jesus said, “This illness is not to death but is for the glory of God in order that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5 And Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 Then, when He heard that Lazarus was ill, indeed He remained in the place where He was two days. 7 After this, He said to the disciples, “We should go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and again you go there?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him.” 11 He said this, and after this, He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go in order to awaken him.” 12 Then the disciples said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved.” 13 But Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that He was talking about the rest of sleep. 14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus died, 15 and I am glad for your sake that I was not there in order that you all may believe. But we should go to him.” 16 Then Thomas, being called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “We should also go in order that we may die with Him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 Then after coming, Jesus found him already four days in the tomb. 18 And Bethany was near Jerusalem about fifteen stadiads off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary in order to console them about their brother. 20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you were here, my brother would not have died. 22 But now I also know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” 24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. The one believing in me, though he die, he will live, 26 and everyone living and believing in me will never diedt forever. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 And after saying this, she went and called Mary, her sister, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and was going to Him. 30 But Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him. 31 Then the Jews, being with her in the house and consoling her after seeing that Mary rose quickly and went, followed her after thinking that she was going to the tomb in order to weep there. 32 Then as Mary came to where Jesus was, after seeing Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, ”Lord, if you were here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Then as Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews, after coming with her weeping, He was painfully moved in His spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, “Where have you all laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and seedu.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!” 37 And some of them said, “Is He not able after opening the eyes of the blind to make this man not die?dv

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, again painfully moved in Himself, came to the tomb. And it was a cave, and a stone was laying against it. 39 Jesus said, Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to Him, “Lord, now there is an odor, for it has been four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you heard me. 42 And I have known that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing around, I spoke in order that that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 And after saying these things, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man after having died came out, his hands and feet being bound with linen strips and his face being wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him and allow him to go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Then many of the Jews, after coming with Mary and seeing what He did, believed in Him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus did. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the councildw and were saying, “What are we doing since this man does many signs? 48 If we let Him do this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, being a high priest that year, said to them, “You all know nothing, 50 nor do you all understand that it is better for you all that one man should die for the people and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 But he did not say this on his own accord, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also in order that the children of God after having been scattered should be gathered into one. 53 Then from that day on they planned in order to kill Him.

54 Then Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness to a town being called Ephraim, and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country before the Passover in order to purify themselves. 56 Then they were seeking Jesus and saying to one another after having stood in the temple, “What do you all think? That He will not comedx to the feast?” 57 And the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone might know where He is, they should let them know so that they might arrest Him.dy

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

12 Then six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, who Jesus raised from the dead. 2 Then they made a dinner for Him there, and Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with Him. 3 Then Mary, after taking a pound of expensive ointment made from pure narddz, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples (he who was about to betray Him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denariiea and given to the poor?” 6 But he said this not because he was caring about the poor but because he was a thief and having the moneybag was baring what was put into it. 7 Then Jesus said, Leave her in order that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you all will always have with you all, but you all will not always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9 Then the large crowd of the Jews learned that He was there and came not only because of Jesus but also in order to see Lazarus, who He raised from the dead. 10 And the chief priests made plans in order to kill Lazarus as well 11 because many of the Jews on account of him were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day the large crowd, after coming to the feast, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him and were crying out, “Hosanna!eb Blessed is He coming in the name of the Lord,ec even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus, after finding a young donkey, sat on it, as it has been written,

15 “Do not feared, daughter of Zion;

        behold, your king is coming,

        sitting on a donkey's colt!”ee

16 These things His disciples did not understand at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and were done to Him. 17 Then the crowd was witnessing who was with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead. 18 This also was the reason the crowd met Him because they heard He had done this sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to themselves, “You all see that you all are gaining nothing. Look, the world goesef after Him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 And some Greeks were among those going up in order to worship at the feast. 21 Then these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and were asking him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come in order that the Son of Man may be glorified. 24 Amen, amen, I say to you all, unless a grain of wheat, after falling to the earth dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.eg 25 The one loving his lifeeh loses it, and the one hating his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me, and where I am, there also my servant will be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.ei

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 “Now my soul has been troubled, and what should I say? ‘Father, saveej me from this hour’? But for this purpose, I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorifyek your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 Then the crowd, after having stood and heard, was saying that it had thundered. Others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “Not because of me this voice has come but because of you all. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be thrown out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will drawel all people to myself.” 33 And He was saying this, showing by what kind of death He was about to die. 34 Then the crowd answered Him, “We heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever, and how do you say that it is necessary the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 Then Jesus said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you all. Walk when you all have the light in order that darkness not overtake you all. And the one walking in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 When you all have the light believe in the light in order that you all may become sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

Jesus said these things, and after departing, He hid Himself from them. 37 And after having done so many signs before them, they were not believing in Him 38 in order that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said:

“Lord, who has believed what was heard from us,

and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?”em

39  For this reason they were not able to believe since again Isaiah says,

40 “He has blinded their eyes

        and hardened their heart,

in order that they do not seeen with their eyes,

and understand with their heart, and turn,

        and I will heal them.”eo

41 Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke about Him. 42 Nevertheless, many of the authorities also believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess in order that they would not be put out of the synagogue, 43 for they loved the glory of man more than the glory of God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, “The one believing in me does not believe in me but in Him sending me, 45 and the one seeing me sees Him sending me. 46 I have come into the world as a light in order that everyone believing in me may not remainep in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him,eq for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one rejecting me and not receiving my words has a judge, the word that I spoke will judge him on the last day 49 because I did not speak on my own authority, but the Father sending me has Himself given me a commandment—what I should say and what I should speaker. 50 And I know that His commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, as the Father has spoken to me, this I say.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 And before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knew that His hour came that He should depart out of this world to the Father, after loving His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And during dinner, the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him. 3 Knowing that the Father gave all things into His hands and that He came from God and is going back to God, 4 He rose from dinner and laid aside His outer garments and after taking a towel, tied it around His waist. 5 Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter, he said to Him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand yet, but you will know after this.” 8 Peter said to Him, “You will never washes my feet forever.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one, after having bathed himself, does not have need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you all are clean, but not every one of you all.” 11 For He had known who would betray Him; for this reason, He said, “Not all of you all are clean.”

12 The when He had washed their feet and put on His outer garments and was seated again, He said to them, “Do you all understand what I have done to you all? 13 You all call me Teacher and Lord, and you all say rightly, for I am. 14 If therefore, I washed your feet, the Lord and Teacher, you all are also obligated to wash one another's feet. 15 For I gave you all an example in order that, as I did to you all, you all should also do. 16 Amen, amen, I say to you all, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is the one sent greater than the one after sending him. 17 If you all know these things, blessed are you all if you all do them. 18 I am not speaking about of all of you all, I know who I chose. But in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘The one eating my bread lifted his heel against me.’et 19 From now, I say this this to you all before it happens in order that you all may believe when it happens that I am. 20 Amen, amen, I say to you all, the one receiving whenever I send receives me and the one receiving me, receives the one sending me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in the Spirit and witnessed and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you all that one of you all will betray me.” 22 The disciples were looking at one another perplexedeu about whom He spoke. 23 One of His disciples was reclining at table in the bosom of Jesusev, who Jesus loved, 24 then Simon Peter motioned to him to ask who it might be about who He spoke. 25 Then after leaning back on the breast of Jesus, that disciple said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom, after dipping the morsel of bread, I will give it to him.” Then after dipping the morsel, He gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do it quickly.” 28 And no one reclining at table knew why He spoke this to him. 29 For some were thinking because Judas had the moneybag that Jesus said to him, “Buy what we have need of for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 Then, after receiving the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.

A New Commandment

31 Then when he went out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and immediately glorify Him. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you all. You all will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I go, you all are not able to come,’ now I also say to you all. 34 A newew commandment I give to you all that you all should love one another: as I loved you all that you all should also love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you all are my disciples, if you all have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why am I not able to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crowex until you will deny me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubledey. Believe in God and believe in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. And if not, would I have told you all that I go to prepare a place for you all? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you all, I will come again and will take you all to myself in order that where I am, you all may also be.ez 4 And where I am going, you all know the way.” 5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How are we able to know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you all had known me, you all will know my Father also. And from now on, you all do know Him and have seen Him.”

8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, showfa us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “So long I am with you all, and you have not known me, Philip? The one after having seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?fb The words that I say to you all I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father dwelling in me does His works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, and if not, believe because of the works themselves.

12 “Amen, amen, I say to you all, the one believing in me will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these he will do because I go to the Father. 13 And whatever you all ask in my name, this I will do in order that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you all ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you all love me, you all will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you all another Helperfc in order that He be with you all forever: 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world is not able to receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You all know Him because He dwells with you all and will be in you all.

18 “I will not leave you all orphans; I come to you all. 19 Yet a little while and the world does not see me anymore, but you all see me because I live and you all will live. 20 In that day, you all will know that I am in my Father and you all in me and I in you all. 21 The one having my commandments and keeping them, he is the one loving me. And the one loving me will be loved by my Father, and I will love Him and manifestfd myself to Him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how has it been that to us you are about to manifest yourself and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make for ourselves a home with him.fe 24 The one not loving me does not keep my words. And the word that you all hear is not mine but the Father's sending me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you all while remaining with you all. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you all. 27 Peaceff I leave with you all. My peace I give to you all. Not as the world gives do I give to you all. Do not let your hearts be troubledfg, nor let them be afraidfh. 28 You heard that I said to you all, ‘I am going away, and I come to you all.’ If you all were loving me, you all would have rejoiced because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you all before it takes place in order that when it does take place you all may believe. 30 I will no longer speak much with you all, for the ruler of this world is coming, and in me he does not have anything, 31 but in order that the world may now that I love the Father and as the Father commanded me, this I do. Rise, we should go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me not bearing fruit, He takes away, and every branch not bearing fruit, He prunes in order that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already, you all are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you all. 4 Abide in me, and I in you all. As the branch is not able to bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you all unless you all abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you all are the branches. The one abiding in me and I in him, he bears much fruit because apart from me, you all are not able to do anything. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you all abide in me and my words abide in you all, ask whatever you all wish and it will be done for you all.fi 8 By this, my Father was glorified that you all bear much fruit and be my disciples. 9 As the Father loved me, so I loved you all. Abide in my love. 10 If you all keep my commandments, you all will abide in my love.fj As I have kept my Father's commandments, you all will abide in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you all in order that my joy may be in you all and that your joy may be full.

12 “This is my commandment, that you all love one another as I loved you all. 13 No one has greater love than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You all are my friends if you all do what I command you all. 15 No longer do I call you all servants because a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you all friends because all that I heard from my Father I made known to you all. 16 You all did not choose me, but I chose you all and appointed you all that you all should go and bear fruit and your fruit should abide in order that whatever you all ask the Father in my name, He may give it to you all. 17 These things I command you all in order that you all may love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before you all. 19 If you all were of the world, the world would love you as its own, and because you all are not of the world, but I chose you all out of the world, for this reason the world hates you all. 20 Remember the word that I said to you all: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you all. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you all on account of my name because they do not know Him sending me. 22 If I did not come and speak to them, they would not havefk sin, but now they do not have an excuse for their sin. 23 The one hating me also hates my Father. 24 If I did not do the works among them that no one else did, they would not have sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But in order that the word after having been written in their Law may be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’fl

26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you all from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will witness about me. 27 And you all also witness because you all are with me from the beginning.

16 “These things I have said to you all in order that you all do not stumblefm. 2 They will put you all out of the synagogues. But the hour is coming that everyone after killing you all may think he is offering servicefn to God. 3 And these things they will do because they did not know the Father nor me. 4 But these things I have said to you all in order that when the hour comes, you all remember that I told them to you all.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But I did not tell you all these things from the beginning because I was with you all. 5 But now, I am going to Him sending me, and none of you all ask me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But since I have told you all these things, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 But I tell you all the truth, it is advantageous to you all that I go away, for if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you all. But if I go, I will send Him to you all.fo 8 And after coming, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 indeed concerning sin because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness because I go to the Father and you all do not see me any longer; 11 concerning judgment because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I still have many things to tell you all, but you all are not able to bear them now. 13 But when He comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you all into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He will hear, He will say, and He will announce to you all the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me because He will take what is mine and He will announce it to you all. 15 All that the Father has is mine; for this reason, I said that He takes what is mine and announces it to you all.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 “A little while, and you all see me no longer; and again a little while, and you all will see me.” 17 Then His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you all will not see me, and again a little while, and you all will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 Then they were saying, “What is this that He says ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they were wishing to ask Him, and He said to them, “Concerning this, do you all seek one another because I said, ‘A little while, and you all do not see me, and again a little while, and you all will see me’? 20 Amen, amen, I say to you all that you all will weep and lamentfp, but the world will rejoice. You all will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman may give birth, she has sorrow because her hour has comefq, but when she may deliver the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a human being was born into the world. 22 And you all, therefore now indeed, have sorrow, but I will see you all again, and your hearts will rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you all. 23 And in that day, you all will not ask me anything. Amen, amen, I say to you all that whatever you all ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you all. 24 Until now, you all did not ask anything in my name. Ask, and you all will receive, in order that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you all in figures of speech. The hour is coming when no longer in figures will I speak to you all, but I will announce to you all plainly about the Father. 26 In that day, you all will ask in my name, and I do not say to you all that I will ask the Father on your behalf, 27 for the Father Himself loves you all because you all have loved and believed me that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Behold, now you are speaking plainly and not in figures of speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not have need that anyone question you; by this, we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Now you all believe? 32 Behold, an hour is coming and has come that you all may be scattered, each to his own home, and may leave me alone. And I am not alone because the Father is with me. 33 These things I have said to you all in order that you all may have peace in me. In the world, you all have tribulation. But have courage; I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 These things Jesus spoke after lifting up His eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorifyfr your Son in order that the Son may glorify you. 2 As you gave Him authority over all flesh in order that all whom you have given to Him, He may give eternal life. 3 And this is eternal life that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you sent. 4 I glorified you on earth after perfecting the work that you have given me to do. 5 And now, glorifyfs me, Father in yourself with the glory that I hadft with you before the world existed.

6 “I manifested your name to the people whom you gave to me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and your word they have kept. 7 Now, they have known that everything that you have given me is from you 8 because the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they received them and know truly that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I ask for them. I do not ask for the world but for those whom you have given to me because they are yours. 10 And all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, and they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keepfu them in your name which you have given to me in order that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in your name which you have given me and I guarded them and none of them was lost except the son of destruction in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled. 13 But now, I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world in order that they may have my joy fulfilledfv in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctifyfwfx them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake, I sanctify myself in order that they also may be sanctifiedfy in truth.

20 ”I do not ask for these only but also for those believing in me through their word 21 in order that they may all be one as you, Father, are in me and I in you that they also may be in us in order that the world may believe that you sent me. 22 And the glory that you have given to me, I have given to them in order that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me in order that they may become perfectly one as we are one in order that the world may know that you sent me and loved them as you loved me. 24 Father, those whom you have given me, I wish that where I am, they may be with me in order that they may see my glory that you have given to me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you, and these know that you sent me. 26 And I made known to them your name, and I will make it known that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

18 After saying these things, Jesus went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley where there was a garden which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also had known the place because Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 Then Judas, after taking a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all things coming upon Him, went out and said to them, “Whom do you all seek?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He said to them, I am.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, had also stood with them. 6 Then when He said to them, I am,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Then again He asked them, “Whom do you all seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you all that I am. Therefore, if you all seek me, let these men go,” 9 in order that the word that He spoke may be fulfilled, “of those whom you have given me, I lost none.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The name of the servant was Malchus). 11 Then Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into its sheath, do I not drinkfz the cup that the Father has given to me?”

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas

12 Then the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And they led Him to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 And it was Caiaphas, after advising the Jews that it is advantageous one man die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus

15 And Simon Peter was following Jesus with another disciple. And that disciple was known to the chief priest and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 but Peter had stood outside at the door. Then the other disciple known to the high priest went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl at the door said to Peter, “Are you also a disciple of this man?”ga He said, “I am not.” 18 And the servants and officers had stood there after having made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter also was with them, after having stood, warming himself.

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19 Then the high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. 20 Jesus answered Him, I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all Jews come together, and I said nothing in secret. 21

Why do you all ask me? Ask those after having heard what I said to them. Behold, they know what I said.” 22 And after saying these things, one of the officers, after having stood by, struck Jesus after saying, ”Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If I spoke wrongly, witness about the wrong, but if I spoke rightly, why do you beat me?” 24 Then Annas sent Him after having been bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Peter Denies Jesus Again

25 And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then they said to him, “Are you also His disciple?”gb He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Then again Peter denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.

Jesus Before Pilate

28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the praetoriumgc. And it was early morning. And they did not enter into the praetorium in order that they would not be defiledgd but may eat the Passover. 29 Then Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you all bring against this man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not deliver Him over to you.” 31 Then Pilate said to them, “You all take Him, and according to your own law, judge Him.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us kill anyone.” 32 In order that the word of Jesus may be fulfilled which He said, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.

My Kingdom Is Not of This World

33 Then Pilate again entered into the praetorium and called Jesus and said to Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew?ge Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you over to me. What did you do?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my subordinates would have been fighting in order that I might not be deliveredgf over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.” 37 Then Pilate said to Him, “Then you are a king?” gg Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this purpose, I have been born, and for this purpose, I have come into the world—in order that I may witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, again he went out to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39 But it is a custom to you all that I should release one man to you all during the Passover. Therefore, are you all willing I should release to you all the King of the Jews?” 40 Then they cried out again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” And Barabbas was a robber.gh

Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and floggedgi Him. 2 And the soldiers, after twisting together a crown of thorns, put it on His head and clothed Him in a purple robe. 3 And they were coming up to Him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and were striking Him with their hands. 4 And Pilate went out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you all in order that you all may know that I find no guilt in Him.” 5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” 6 Then when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “You all take Him and crucify Him, for I do not find guilt in Him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law, He needs to die because He has made Himself the Son of God.” 8 Then when Pilate heard this statement, he feared greatly 9 and went to the praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Then Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it was given to you from above. For this reason he who delivered me over to you has greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate was seeking to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar.gj 13 Then Pilate, after hearing these words, brought out Jesus and sat down on the judgment seat at a place being called The Stone Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 And it was the day of the Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.gk And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 Then they cried out, “Away with Him! Away with Him1 Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.” 16 Then he delivered Him over to them in order to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

Then they took Jesus, 17 and bearing His own cross, He went out to the place being called The Place of a Skull which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him and with Him two others, one on either side and Jesus in the middle. 19 And Pilate also wrote a titlegl and put it on the cross. And it was written, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Then many of the Jews read this title because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. 21 Then the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not writegm, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 Then when the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His garmentsgn and divided them into four parts: a part for each soldier also His tunicgo. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 Then they said to one another, “We should not teargp it but cast lots for it to see whose it will be,” in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says,

“They divided my garments among them,

and for my clothing they cast lots.”gq

Then indeed, the soldiers did these things, 25 but His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene, had stood by the cross of Jesus. 26 Then Jesus, after seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved standinggr nearby, said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

The Death of Jesus

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that now all had been completed (in order that the Scripture be perfect), said, “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour winegs was standing there. Then after putting a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch, they held it to His mouth. 30 Then when Jesus received the sour wine, He said, “It is completed, gtand after bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

31 Then the Jews, since it was the day of Preparation in order that the bodies would not remaingu on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other after being crucified with Him. 33 But after coming to Jesus, as they saw Him already having died, did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and immediately came out blood and water. 35 And he, after having seen it, has witnessed, and his witness is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—in order that you all also may believe. 36 For these things took place in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.”gv 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on Him whom they pierced.”gw

Jesus Is Buried

38 And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because of fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. Then he came and took away His body. 39 And Nicodemus also came, after coming to Him first by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about one hundred litrasgx. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the custom of the Jews to bury. 41 And there was a garden in the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore, because of the Jewish day of Preparation since the tomb was near, they laid Jesus there.

The Resurrection

20 And on the first day of the weekgy, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone after having been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved and said to them, “They took the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they laid Him.” 3 Then Peter and the other disciple went out, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 And both of them were running together, and the other disciple outran Peter, and he came to the tomb first. 5 And after stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter also came, following him, and went into the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth which was on His head, not lying with the linen cloths but having been folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple also went in after reaching the tomb first and saw and believed; 9 for as yet, they had not understood the Scripture that it is necessary He rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went again to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 But Mary had stood outside the tomb weeping. Then as she was weeping, she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the foot where the body of Jesus was laid. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They took away my Lord, and I do not know where they laid Him.” 14 After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, and she had not known that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing that He is a gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you carried Him away, tell me where you laid Him and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” After turning and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not touchgz me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father, but go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord” —and He said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 Then, being evening that day, the first day of the weekha, the doors, after having been locked where the disciples were because of fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them, “Peace to you all.” 20 And after saying this, He showed His hands and His side to them. Then the disciples rejoiced after seeing the Lord. 21 Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you all. As the Father has sent me, I also am sending you all.” 22 And after saying this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 Anyone’s sins you all forgive, they have been forgiven to them; anyone’s sins you all hold on to, the have been withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

24 And Thomas, one of the twelve, the one being called the Didymushb, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 Then the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side, I will never believe.hc

26 And after eight days, His disciples were inside again and Thomas was with them. Jesus came—the doors being lockedhd—and stood in the midst and said, “Peace to you all.” 27 Then He said to Thomas,Put your finger here and behold my hands; and put out your hand and place it in my side and do not behe disbelieving, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me you have believed me? Blessed are those after not seeing and yet believing.”

The Purpose of This Book

30 Then indeed Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples which are not written in this book, 31 but these have been written in order that you all may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you all may have eternal life in His name.

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

21 After this, Jesus Himself appeared again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and He appeared in this way. 2 Simon Peter and Thomas (being called Didymus) and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee and the sons of Zebedee and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going to fish.” They said to him, “We also are going with you.” And they went out and embarked into the boat, and during that night, they caught nothing.

4 And now as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not knowhf that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?”hg They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” Then they cast it, and they were not strong enough to pull it in because of the quantity of fish. 7 Then that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Then Simon Peter after hearing that it was the Lord, put on his outer garment, for he was stripped down, and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from land but about two hundred cubitshh off, dragging the net full of fish.

9 Then as they disembarked onto land, they saw a charcoal fire in place and fish lying on it and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you all now caught.” 11 Then Simon Peter embarked and hauled the net onto land, full of large fish, 153 of them. And being so many, the net did not break. 12 Jesus said to them, Come and eat breakfast.” And none of the disciples were daring to ask Him, “Who are you?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after being raised from the dead.

Jesus and Peter

15 Then when they ate breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to Him, Feed my lambs.hi 16 He said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, Shepherdhj my sheep.” 17 He said to him a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you lovehk me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him a third time, “Do you love me?”

and said to Him, “Lord, you know everything; you knowhl that I love you.” Jesus said to Him, Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were young, you were dressing yourself and walking where you were wishing, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” 19 (And this He said, showing by what kind of death he would glorify God.) And after saying this, He said to him,Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

20 Peter, after turning, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved, following—who also reclined during dinner on His chest—and said, “Lord, who is the one betraying you?” 21 Then after seeing this, Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I wish him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” 23 Then this saying went out to the brothers that this disciple was not to die; but Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If I wish him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple bearing witness about these things, and the one writinghm these things, and we know that his witness is true. 25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did. If every one of them were written, I suppose the world itself would not be able to contain the books being written.
